    Episode 1474 – Audio Dusk | All Intros 996 – 999 for Labor Day

SCOOTER: Friends beyond the binary, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, whether you're a fan of theme parks or amusement parks or those…the old bemusement park, it’s time…or you're bemused in a park or you're bemused by my lack of snark, it’s time for Sleep With Me, the podcast that may or may not put you to sleep.

Intro: (Intro music) Hey, are you up all night tossing, turning, mind racing? Trouble getting to sleep? Trouble staying asleep? Well, welcome. This is Sleep With Me, the podcast that puts you to sleep. We do it with a bednight…a bedtime story. Alls you need to do is get in bed, turn out the lights, and press Play. I’m gonna do the rest. What I’m going to attempt to do is create a safe place where you could set aside whatever’s keeping you awake, whether it’s thoughts, things you’re thinking about on your mind, thoughts, feelings, anything you’re feeling emotionally on the inside or the outside, physical sensations, changes in time, temperature, routine, work schedule…oh boy, do I love helping everybody who’s having a change in…you know, like I said, I’m trying to give glory to the sixth, seventh and eighth, ninth, and tenth shifts.

I’ve recently learned through my imagination that there’s even work shifts that are in Roman numerals; so the IV shift, the III shift, the V shift. Those may not be actually real shifts, but to me they are because if…whatever’s keeping you awake, I guess I’d like to take your mind off that and keep you company while you fall asleep. Now, this…a couple things to know if you’re new. Oh, how am I gonna do it? You’re right, how are…how do I propose to do it? What I’ll do is I’ll send my voice across the deep, dark night here. I’m gonna use lulling, soothing, creaky, dulcet tones. Those are creaky dulcets, a bit like the sounds…those bugs you hear in the summertime that are nice. I think those are called…I don’t know. I don’t know what they’re called. I’m sorry.

I don’t even know if they’re B-U-G-Ss, but they make a noise that you hear when you’re in a grassy area, different from crickets or things…it makes this humming sound. That’s what creaky, dulcet tones kinda sound like. That’s another sound I love but I don’t always appreciate. you say, wow, I didn’t realize that added a soothing mix to summertime. I forget what the bugs are called. I want to say acacia, but I think that’s a kind of tree, and Arcadia is a place, so…but you know, those…you know the ones. They’re kinda humming and it’s like, is that like, one billion beings singing in unison? Then you’re like, have they been singing the whole time or…and I just was aware of it, or does it come and it go? It’s really hard to track. That’s kinda like how listening to this podcast is.

Then you may even say, do I even love that noise or is…am I starting to not love it? But whatever it is, I’m glad you’re here and I’m here to keep you company while you fall asleep. So, I’ll…I’m gonna send my voice across the deep, dark night…lulling, soothing, creaky, dulcet tones, pointless meanders — we’ve been on a few already — and superfluous tangents, all in the spirit to keep you company while you drift off, to take your mind off of stuff while you fall asleep, ideally. Now, if you’re new, a few things to know; this…that regular listeners tell me all the time. My regular listeners, how you doing? Good evening. You know what I’m talking about. I am like that thing, or other sounds like wind in the trees. That’s another sound. You say, wow, that’s beautiful. Wait a second, is it…?

Then you kinda forget about it and then you say, whoa, but that’s a nice sound, that wind in the trees in the distance. Then you forget about it again. It is one of those things. I say,, is it there all the time or am I just…? I mean, I guess the wind, they’d say…and the other…the beings, they’d say, no, we’re not there all the time, but we’d appreciate it if you did appreciate us. I say, okay, that’s on my to-do list now, my desire list. I desire to appreciate you both more. I’m trying to use I…I don’t know how to use an I-statement yet, but the…I do desire to appreciate your sounds more and live in the moment. I definitely desire that, and I will nod in appreciation.

So, if you see me pacing around, whether you’re making wind sounds or that wonderful buzzing noise you make, or you see me thinking, that may be a sign I’m appreciating your…that eventually I’ll appreciate your sounds. Okay, so, back to the new listeners, though. So, that was a superfluous tangent, I think. So, new listeners, a few things to know upfront; I’m really glad you’re here and I’m so glad you’re here I want to be straightforward with you and kinda give you a little bit of a overview to try to make you feel comfortable. So, this pod…the first thing…the first way I’ll make you feel comfortable is if you’re feeling strange or you’re not sure or you’re skeptical about this show, that’s totally normal.

That’s how most people arrive at this podcast, ‘cause maybe you heard about it from somebody or you saw it somewhere and you say, wait a second, so, what is that? It’s a dude talking you to sleep about nothing but kind of about something? Someone might have said, yeah, it totally works for me, but it’s a bit different. You say, yeah, it’s…I’m listening right now and I’m not sure about this. That’s really normal and that’s how most listeners’ relationship with the show begins. You say, I’m not so sure about this. So, give it a few tries. I’m just not everybody’s cup of a tea, but for most people they real…it takes just a little bit of…while to get used to how the show works, because in some sense it kinda works in the background. That’s the next thing you need to know, is that this is a podcast you don’t really listen to.

You just kinda barely pay attention to it or keep it out of focus. You can listen but you don’t necessarily…you shouldn’t feel any pressure to pay attention or…you know what I mean? Or be…if you’re waiting around for it to get started and make sense, I guess that’s the thing; it really does…it really never gets there. So, kinda sit back just like you’re looking at clouds or listening to wind or our forest friends in a way…those two things…you know what I love about you, forest friends and wind in the trees? You don’t really ask a lot of me. You say, hey…you did this time. You said, hey, could you appreciate me more? I said, yeah, totally. I’d like to. Then you said in my brain well, that’s kinda…and I said, yeah, no, I’ll do my best to appreciate you more. I appreciate you. I’m saying that.

I say, I gotta do a better job of expressing my appreciation. But for me, there’s…I mean, that’s pretty low-pressure anyway. Me, that’s even lower pressure. You just gotta play the podcast. You could put it on a sleep timer or you could just play it all night or see how it goes. So, this is a podcast you don’t really listen to. It’s also a sleep podcast that doesn’t put you to sleep. I’m here to be your bore-friend, your bore-bae, your bore-cuz, your bore-sib, your bore-bestie. I’m here to keep you company while you fall asleep and take your mind off of stuff, so I’m here to be here for you to barely pay attention to while you fall asleep. That’s why the shows are over an hour, so you have plenty of time to drift off and you don’t have to wonder when the show’s gonna stop or if you’re gonna be asleep by then.

But also if you can’t sleep, I want to provide reassurance that I’m gonna be here to keep you company with my nonsense and my friendly rambling. I’m here for you, to keep you company. So, that’s…so, a podcast you don’t listen to, a pod…sleep podcast you don’t really fall asleep to, and most people don’t like it on their first listen. So, those are some things I want you to know. The other things I want you to know is the structure of the show is also very different. The show starts off with a few…a greeting; friends beyond the binary, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, theme park fans or whatever I said, so that you feel welcome and invited in and seen. Then there’s business. That’s how the podcast comes out twice a week for free, then there’s an intro which we’re in. We’re about ten minutes into the intro or something.

Maybe eight minutes. I just looked at my clock, but the intro is somewhere…takes somewhere around twelve to twenty minutes of introducing the show, which is very counterintuitive. You say, okay, I don’t understand. But I say, okay, well, I try to introduce the show to new people, but it takes me forever to get to any points. But the intro also serves a purpose to let the sun set. I’m not talking about the physical sunset but the sunset that’s kinda keeping us up, to let the day fade away and to give you some wind-down time. So, some people listen while they’re in bed getting comfortable, drifting off, and a lot of listeners listen as they’re getting ready for bed, but there’s…and there’s no wrong way to listen.

Three percent of people skip the…skip ahead and start the show at twenty minutes, and then some people set their sleep timers. This doesn’t have to do with the intro, but I think it’s around the same thing. Like, two percent of people set a sleep timer for thirty minutes. Two percent of people set it for forty-five, and then I have no idea how many people set it for sixty; maybe another eight percent of people. So, you could kinda see as you begin to listen to the show. There’s people that listen all night, there’s people that listen on Patreon to story-only episodes, there’s people that listen on Patreon to all-intro episodes.

So, at first just kinda see how it goes, but the purpose of the intro is to ease you intro bedtime, and…because for me, I’ve just never been able to instantly fall asleep, and the few times that does happen, it’s like I’m asleep for three minutes and then it’s like, was I just asleep? Oh, and then my brain’s like, by the way, did you notice we weren’t comfortable in bed? I said, well, I looked pretty comfortable those three minutes I was asleep. I fell right asleep. I don’t know. That’s just another one of those things that happens to me to keep me in touch with the podcast. That happened last night and I think the night before, too. I said wait a second, I fell right…I was so tired, and then…I don’t know. Those are the kinda things you just have to throw your hands up at. You say, what the heck?

What do you mean I’m not comfortable? I just fell asleep. There’s a part of me that’s constantly…like, would you believe this temperature you got the room at? Would you believe the pillows are…you have your own pillows in your wrong positions? I say, I don’t understand. I was just sound asleep for three minutes only. Couldn’t we have just stayed asleep? We seemed pretty comfortable earlier. Nah, we weren’t…you’re just…you just don’t know what you’re doing. That’s…so much sleep advice has that undertone. I don’t know if anybody else feels that way. I mean, so much advice in general…that’s why ideally I try not to give advice. I say, well, you just don’t know what you’re doing, obviously. You’re doing it wrong. I say, well, I…how was I doing it wrong, though?

‘Cause we did fall asleep; we just didn’t stay asleep. I say, exactly. Exactly my point. That’s why we need to make some adjustments around here. I was asleep too until I realized it. I say, thank goodness I got you on my side. I wish I could say where you been all my life, but I know where you’ve been; right there at the forefront of my mind. Okay, that was a bit of a tangent, but that’s…that kinda goes into another thing which I’ll talk about in a minute. But so, the intro is to give you some space and to ease you into bedtime. Ideally what I’ve found for me at least is having a bedtime routine, despite all those ups and downs I have. It gives me the best chance to get a good night’s sleep and having a wind-down. So, I hope for some of you the podcast becomes part of a layered wind-down, whatever else you’re doing.

You could be polishing shoes or something, looking at pictures in a magazine, anything; doodling, remaking your bed. That’s another thing I’ve been doing lately, is…well, why don’t I go on another tangent about…? What I’ve been doing is every few days…’cause I have now…I have…’cause it’s wintertime when I’m recording this, which it probably won’t be when you’re hearing this. But so, I had gotten a weighted comforter for the holidays, and I have a regular comforter because I like my room obviously very cold. So…and those both have duvet covers on them. So, what I’ll do is because I do so much tossing and turning, is then my duvets, even with ropes or whatever’s in there, they get thrown out of whack, as you say, in the official duvet business.

So, then I just…I have to…what I do is I just flip my duvets over, so I go from…this may be breaking a major rule from international duvet etiquette, so I won’t ever win that award anymore, but I’ll take my bottom of my duvets, the old back…I’ll put the back end of my duvet right up in my face, double…two back ends of duvet covers right in my face. It doesn’t bother me one bit because then I’ll do so much tossing and turning that it’ll reset…my duvets will be bottom heavy. Then three days later my duvets will be top-heavy again. It really works, and that actually…I’ve talked about this before, years ago. I can remember that remaking my bed has become part…is part of my wind-down routine. It really is, and puffing the old pillows and stuff.

So, I hope the intro can be part of that for you and ease you into bedtime, is my point. Then there’s business after the intro. That’s where podcast advertisers like their business, at the mid-roll, which is just what they call it. It just means a third of the way into the show or something. Then after that is our bedtime story, which tonight it’ll be a visit from my neighbor Ray, the most popular guest we have, so that’ll be nice. I’m not saying that sarcastically. I’m just…Ray is…that’s all true. So, then…and then there’s thank-yous at the end of the show. So, that’s the structure of the show. I think we kinda got to the reason I make the show, which is pretty clear, too. I make the show because I’ve been there, tossing, turning, mind racing, trouble getting to sleep, trouble staying asleep, trouble waking up early, all that stuff. I deal with it.

So, if I can help, it’d really be my honor, is to help you out and take your mind off of stuff and keep you company while you drift off. The other side of it is that you deserve a good night’s sleep. You deserve a place of respite. You deserve a bedtime that you could look forward to or at least feel good about instead of dreading like I have in the past. Like, if you can just at least have that thing…well, I got the Sleep With Me podcast, so if I do wake up after three minutes, I could put that back on, or oh, I have it on, so now I can listen in what Scooter’s talking about, and it won’t make any sense and I don’t really have to listen, and it’s pleasant enough to keep me company. So, I hope I can help you fall asleep.

Now, like I said, it doesn’t work for everybody but not only do you deserve a good night’s sleep, it’s my belief — it’s not a belief; it’s true — our world is a better place with you rested, because you can live a more fuller life, and that impacts everybody in a small way. I really do…I don’t believe it; I know it. I know you deserve a good night’s sleep, and this…that’s why I say this is an honor for me to make the show. I really appreciate you checking it out. I really hope, I yearn and I strive to help you fall asleep. I work really hard on this show. Thanks again for coming by, and here’s a couple ways I’m able to do it for you twice a week.

Hey, are you up all night tossing, turning, mind racing? Trouble getting to sleep? Trouble staying asleep? Well, welcome. This is Sleep With Me, the podcast that puts you to sleep. We do it with a bedtime story. Alls you could do or need to do or if you would like to do is get in bed, turn out the lights, and press Play. I’m gonna do the rest. What I’m going to attempt to do is create a safe place where you could set aside whatever’s keeping you awake, whether that’s thoughts you’re thinking about, thoughts on your mind, it could be changes in time, temperature, routine. Could be something else, something baffling or situational, or you maybe work a second, third shift. Whatever it is, I’m gonna be here to take your mind off of stuff and keep you company so that you could fall asleep.

The way I’m gonna do that is I’m gonna send my voice across the deep, dark night. I’m gonna use lulling, soothing, creaky, dulcet tones. If you’ve ever been soothed by the opening of a creaky door, then you’re in the right place. If you haven’t, you might still be in the right place. Creaky, dulcet tones just describes my voice which is…it’s a very human voice. Some would say, yeah, it’s just…it’s not perfect, it’s not polished, but it’s here for you to take your mind off of stuff and put you to sleep. Creaky, dulcet tones, pointless meanders, superfluous tangents. Did I say that already? Repetitive thoughts, repetitive words, confusion. Oh my gosh, it’s been a while since I said…if I had a band in the eighties, a hair band, I guess the name of the band would be Profusion of Confusion, but that would have been our storied album.

I don’t know what we’d be called. I’m sure the listeners will give me a lot of feedback on this. But they say, oh boy, that was the album that really is…other than their…The Untitled One, which was the title of their album…they thought it was snarky calling it The Untitled One. But it was Profusion of Confusion that confused their fans, because before that they were a classical guitar trio and not a glam rock…I don’t know, because…and they didn’t know either, but that was the time. The Zeitgeist was that we were all in a profusion of confusion. I mean, correct. I say, well, that’s pretty much the state of being a human being. So, that album went on to sell zero copies ‘cause it actually was never on sale because it was all in Scooter’s imagination.

Most people wouldn’t even know the difference…they wouldn’t know Sam Goody if they met Sam Goody. They’d say, what are you…is that a brand of candy they give out on Halloween? I’d say, I don’t know. I’m not even sure who Sam Goody is, either. Then people might say, weren’t you introducing a sleep podcast or did I just tune into a narrative music documentary that’s…? I say, oh boy, Profusion of Confusion, it was something we could never forget but we’ll forget it soon, because it’s…we’re actually…oh, so if you’re new, welcome. That was a superfluous tangent and combined with a…whatever that…pointless meander. So, if you’re new, I want you to know a few things. I’m glad you’re here. This podcast does take a few times to get used to, so give it a few tries if you can.

So, if you’re skeptical or doubtful or unsure right now, that’s a really normal way to come to the show. For most listeners, that’s what they say; at first I didn’t like you, and that’s okay. It’s totally understandable. So, let me give you some more information, and I’m not even gonna try to put you at ease. I’m just gonna try to give you some more information so eventually two or three listens from now, it’ll be like, oh, now I get it. He was serious. Profusion of confusion abounds. He doesn’t actually know what words mean. He just knows how to say them. So, here’s the most important thing, is you getting the sleep you deserve and need. That’s the most important part about this show. It’s why I make the show. You deserve a good night’s sleep.

You deserve a bedtime that you don’t dread, that you feel neutral about or look forward to. You deserve something to ease you into bedtime and keep you company while you drift off. That is very important to me because I believe…no, no, I don’t believe; I know that if you get the rest you need and deserve, your life’s gonna be better, and my world, our world is gonna be a better place. You know what’s underrated? Well, I guess not. You know what’s actually…? Microscopic change is under…I guess it’s not underrated. If it was under a microscope, it would be under a microscope. Microscopic change; not underrated because I can’t be sure if I’m…if this is a pun or it’s just a fact. But it’s important whether it’s rated or not.

Microscopic change…one person’s life being better and the world being better is true. So, no, it’s really important to me, and I’ve also been there. I know how it feels in the deep, dark night, tossing, turning, mind racing, trouble getting to sleep, trouble staying asleep. So, it’s important to me, too, because I know how…yeah, dreading bedtime is not something that feels good, or the frustration or the loneliness. I’ve experienced that and more. So, that’s why I make this show. A couple things that are hard to get used to is one, this is a podcast you don’t really listen to. You just kinda barely pay attention to it. So, that takes some getting used to, is…oh, I’m just kind of…it’s not background noise but it’s not something I really listen to, either. It’s a podcast that never gets started but is always going.

When he was saying profusion of confusion, he wasn’t using it in a metaphorical way. He was saying…he was using it in a descriptive way. So, okay, that takes a while to get used to. This also…this podcast doesn’t put you to sleep. The reason the episodes are over an hour is I’m here to keep you company whether you’re awake or asleep. If you can’t sleep, I’ll be here. But that’s kinda what works about the show; I’ll be here whether you’re listening or not so that you don’t have to…I’m here to the end so you don’t have to listen to me. You don’t have to listen to me, and I’ll be here ‘til the end. You could queue up episode after episode after episode, ‘cause my job is to take your mind off of stuff, to be your bore-friend, your bore-bae, your bore-cuz, your bore-sib, your bore-bestie, your bore-bruh if you’re in one of great surfing regions of the world. I’m here.

I’m here to keep you company so you can drift off. I’m here to take your mind off of stuff so you don’t have to pay attention to me. So, those are two things that take getting used to. A sleep podcast that doesn’t put you to sleep…you just wake up at some point tomorrow, and also, you don’t listen to me. So, that’s one thing. The other thing that throws people off is the structure of the show. The structure’s very intentional but it takes some getting used to. The show starts off with a greeting so you feel welcome and seen; friends beyond the binary, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. Then there’s support, listener support, like support for you, support for our communities, then there’s support for the show via Patreon and our sponsors. Then there’s the intro, and the intro is separate from that.

Sometimes people that have strong feelings, they think the intro and the business are the same thing, but the intro is a show within a show. We’re probably already ten minutes into it, where I try to efficiently describe the podcast and then I get distracted. Or my own profusion of confusion, it starts to spill…My Cupeth Spilleth Over With Confusion; that was the first track on there. That was confusing, and that was also one of the pictures on the back. No one understood it because it didn’t make any sense. That’s kinda this podcast. That’s what the intro…the intro kinda has a mix of that but also me telling you about the podcast and what it is.

But for regular listeners, it has a familiar feel that’s different every time, and that is really, in my opinion, the most important about…part about the show. It feels familiar so you can get comfortable, but it’s different every time so whatever keeps you awake at night can’t quite adjust. It says, oh, well, he’s talking about profusion of confusion. He hasn’t done that in either one week or 600 episodes. I wonder what he’s gonna talk about. He’ll probably get mixed up and forget what he was even talking about. So, you can’t…whatever’s keeping you awake, I feel like it constantly adjusts to keep us awake, so I constantly adjust the intros. The intro also serves as kind of like a middle point between your daytime life and you falling asleep.

It offers a little bit of dusk, audio dusk, to ease you into bedtime or to help you unwind or to be a part of your wind-down routine. So, some listeners are getting ready for bed, some are in bed getting comfortable, and a lot of listeners are doing some other activity, even if it’s just lying around. That’s an activity. A few percentage of regular listeners skip ahead to twenty or twenty-five minutes, but most people use the intro to just unwind and laugh along with me. So, it’s kinda like community time. It’s like family…it’s like a family meeting that you don’t have to pay attention to. They say, what was I talking about earlier, son? Don’t know. Great work. I’m glad you’re not barely paying attention. No, I was barely paying attention, I think. Did you say something about proposing of collusion or something? No, no.

I don’t know what I was talking about earlier. So, that’s the intro. Then there’s business between the intro and the episode, because that’s what keeps the show free and coming out twice a week. That’s our goal, free twice a week. So, we thank our listeners that support our sponsors for that. Then there’s a story. Tonight it’ll be our episodically modular series, Tales of Lady Witchbeard. She’s a heroine, she’s a witch, she’s a pirate, and she goes on adventures and we get to go along with her. The adventures tend to have a lot of speeches or…if you love exposition, if you love whatever…not world-building but talking about the world that’s been built, you’re in for a treat to fall asleep to, because that’s what our episodically…if you love speeches, if you love to be told and not shown but not told in an efficient way, you’re in for a snoozer.

So, that’s our story, and then there’s thank-yous at the end. So, that’s the structure of the show. That’s why I make the show. Give it a few tries. That’s what hundreds of thousands of people said; I didn’t like this podcast at first, and then I felt ambivalent towards it, and then I stopped listening to it mostly, but I was still kinda listening to it. It’s a podcast I listen…play every night and barely pay attention to it. I’m a big fan. Only took me three times to realize that. So, that’s…just give it a few tries. If you definitely don’t like me or the podcast, go to sleepwithmepodcast.com/nothankyou. There’s other sleep podcasts and stuff there. But I’m so glad you’re here. I really appreciate your time. I work really hard, I yearn and I strive, and I really hope I can help you fall asleep. Here’s a few of the ways I’m able to do it for you free twice a week. Thanks.

Hey, are you up all night tossing, turning, mind racing? Trouble getting to sleep? Trouble staying asleep? Well, welcome. This is Sleep With Me, the podcast that puts you to sleep. We do it with a bedtime story. Alls you need to do is get in bed, turn out the lights, and press Play. I’m gonna do the rest. What I’m going to attempt to do is create a safe place where you could set aside whatever’s keeping you awake, whether it’s thoughts, things on your mind you’re thinking about, thoughts, feelings, anything you’re feeling emotionally or physically. So, you know, thing…whatever’s…thoughts, feelings, physical sensations, changes in time, temperature, routine, whatever it is. It could be…it probably is something else.

Whatever it is, it’s important, and I’m here to take your mind off of it and keep you company while you fall asleep or drift off. What I’m gonna attempt to do is create a safe place, like I said, where you could set all that aside, try to invite you in, and send my voice across the deep, dark night. I’m gonna use lulling, soothing, creaky, dulcet tones. Oh, are my tones creaky. How creaky are they, Scoots? Creaky enough that you don’t need to listen to them. Creaky, dulcet tones, pointless meanders, superfluous tangents, all so you can drift off, not listen to me, and fall asleep. So, that basically means I’m gonna get mixed up, I’m gonna go off-topic, I’m gonna use words whose meanings I don’t know, and then go back and try to figure it out, then say, wait a second, what was that?

Then say, wait, was it…what…that made me remember this one time. Then I’ll say, wait, am I remembering it correctly? All that stuff, that’s kinda pointless meanders and superfluous tangents. To all my regular listeners, I’m so glad you’re here and that I can help you, and to all my new listeners or potential new listeners…you’re right, I’m being presumptive there. I’m here…let me tell you a little bit about the podcast if you’re new, ‘cause if you’re skeptical or doubtful or you’re unsure, that’s a totally normal way to approach the show. In fact, I’d say that’s a pretty smart way. You say, wait, is this supposed to put me to sleep? What are you doing? When does it get started? How or why does it work? I’d say, those are great questions. Some of those I kind of barely have answers to.

The other thing I’ve heard from regular listeners is give the show a few tries. It does not necessarily work on the…it doesn’t ever actually work. You’ll kinda get a better understanding in a minute, but the podcast isn’t something that kinda works or doesn’t work. It’s just kinda there. You say, wow, really, you’re selling me on this. I say, yeah, give it a few tries, too, ‘cause it takes some getting used to. On the first try, a lot of people are trying to figure it out or wait for it to get started. This is one podcast that’s…never gets started and is always going at the same time, like that bird that I talk about that my neighbor had one time that was a perpetual motion machine. The only thing…that’s the only thing I’ve ever seen done in perpetual…well, no. Now they have kinda dancing pandas and things like that.

Waving cats; those have usually some solar cells, and those are in perpetual motion as long as they…I mean, near-perpetual motion. So, if it was in perpetual motion, you’d say it never got started, and in some sense, it’s not going anywhere. If it was like, some sort of…I don’t know. Like, what if the waving cat perpetual motion thing…like, the cat is actually not waving; it’s like it was…it’s moving. You say, well, the cat’s not actually moving. It just is under the…it’s creating the illusion of motion. Some of you may be saying, Scoots, you lost me. I say, great. I’m already…see? It’s already…it never started and it already did.

So, if you’re new, a couple other things to know. The reason I make the show is twofold or two layers…is one, I’ve been there in…tossing, turning, mind racing, trouble getting to sleep, trouble staying asleep, waking up too early or whatever, having to sleep in strange situations or on a thing, or over there, or go to bed early or get up early. I know how all that feels, so if I could help with that, that would be great. But what’s even more important to me is you, because you deserve a good night’s sleep. You deserve a kinda wind-down routine or a bedtime that doesn’t have any dread, like something you could look forward to, and then restful sleep that you need. You deserve that, and if I can provide that, that would be great because that means our world’s a better place.

If you’re rested, even a little bit more rested or you start to get a better…slowly you get more and more sleep, that means you could live your life a little bit more fully and be a little bit more present, and that means our world’s a better place. Just a fact, and it is a fact that your sleep is important and you deserve a good night’s sleep. So, that’s why I make the show. A couple other things to know if you’re…this is a podcast you don’t really listen to. That can be really hard to adjust…it’s a podcast to just barely kinda listen. Now, you can listen, but if you’re listening, waiting for it to put you to sleep, it kinda works in the way where you’re kinda just listening and you fall asleep. So, it’s a podcast you don’t really listen to. It doesn’t really put you to sleep, either.

I’m here to keep you company, and then eventually you just wake up tomorrow or wake up to go to the WC, put the podcast back on. How come they didn’t call the channel the WB the WC? I mean, probably for a lot of reasons. Also because the company that owns it’s WB. Okay, well, we solved that mystery. That was the quickest mystery we’ve ever solved in the history of the podcast. They say, besides the obvious of calling a network the WC, there’s other factual reasons. Okay, fair enough, brain. We got that resolved. We don’t need to, whatever, get caught up on it. Oh, so this is a podcast you don’t listen to. It doesn’t even put you sleep, either. It just is here while you fall asleep. The show is over an hour, so you have plenty of time.

If you can’t sleep for some reason, I’m gonna be here keeping you company to the very end because keeping you company is just as important as you getting the sleep you need, because I know how L-O-N…whatever, however that word is…lone…I know how it can feel in the deep, dark night. There’s a reason dogs howl at the moon and not at the sun. I mean, one, it would be not good for their vision, but two, it captures…or why that’s used as a metaphor…because you say, well, it has a certain feeling to it. I say, that’s what I’m here for. Okay, so, let me see if I can even be more confusing. So, the show doesn’t put you to sleep, you don’t listen to it, your sleep is important.

The other thing that can take some getting used to — but the regular listeners kinda know what I’m gonna talk about here and they have adjusted for what works for them — is the structure of the show. The structure of the show is very intentional. It kinda goes along with the goals and the values of the podcast. So, the show starts off with a greeting so you feel welcome and seen; friends beyond the binary, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. Then there’s listener support and community support, then there’s support for the show via Patreon or sponsors and stuff like that, then there’s our intro. The intro runs between ten and twenty minutes long. It’s not part of the support or anything, though sometimes people think it is, maybe just ‘cause they keep skipping ahead or something.

The intro is a show within a show that serves the purpose of giving you some wind down and ideally getting folded into your own wind-down routine that you discover, whether you listen as you’re getting ready for bed or as you’re in bed or you’re doing some sort of other relaxing activity, or you’re falling asleep. There’s a small percentage of listeners that are falling asleep, or there’s a percentage of listeners that fall asleep, there’s also…three percent, two percent of listeners skip ahead, a few thousand people listen to story-only episodes on Patreon. So, there’s different ways to listen to the intro, but the majority of listeners listen to it as they’re winding down. So, you’re getting kind of…getting ready for bed and slowly slipping into rest. So, that’s what the intro serves. It’s kind of a…not a…it’s either a warm-up or a cool-down.

Then there’s support for the show, and again, that aligns with…I like the podcast to be free and twice a week. So, that’s sponsor support. Then the podcast episode begins, and tonight we’ll be talking about an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, which you don’t necessarily need to understand or watch Star Trek to get it. Don’t worry, I’ll fill you in on every detail you never wanted to know. So, we’ll talk about that and then there will be some thank-yous. So, that’s the structure of the show. That’s why I make the show. I don’t know, I’m really glad you’re here. I work really hard at this podcast. I yearn and I strive to help you fall asleep, so thanks for checking the podcast out, and here’s a couple ways I’m able to be here for you free twice a week.

What I’m going to attempt to do is create a safe place where you could set aside whatever’s keeping you awake, whether it’s thoughts, things on your mind that you’re thinking about, whether…it could be thoughts from the past or the present or the future, so thoughts, any feelings coming up, emotions bubbling to the surface or left over or anticipatory feelings and emotions. It could be physical sensations, it could be a change in your schedule or your routine.

It could be that your schedule is not routine. So many people in different jobs, especially jobs that are community support…jobs where you’re supporting our community and your community, you don’t even have regular schedules, and we get to be there for you ‘cause you’re there for us, so I appreciate that. It could be something else; seasonal or situational. Whatever it is, I’d like to take your mind off of it. What I propose to do is create a safe place, like I said, where you could set that aside. I’m gonna create this safe place by sending my voice across the deep, dark night. I’m gonna use lulling, soothing, creaky, dulcet tones, pointless meanders, which means I’ll go off-topic, pointless meanders, superfluous tangents, I’ll get mixed up, filler words. This podcast is so full of filler words, it’s overflowing.

If I could think of a joke, I would have put it in there. How full is it? It’s over…say, how full is it? It’s overflowing. Did I ever tell you, all my dear listeners, the great tub overflow story? I think…I know there was something called Tub of Overflow. I’ll try to remember to tell it to you because it’s just an example of how human we all can be. I think that was when I made the pod…I think the podcast existed then. Maybe not, though. Maybe it didn’t exist then. I’m not sure. But whatever…here’s the thing; I’m gonna…oh, send my voice…oh, so if you’re new, a few things you might want to know because this podcast is very different. So, if you’re having a reaction or you get here…you say, what is this? What’s this…when’s the story gonna start? I’d say about fifteen minutes from now.

So, the reason this podcast is different is it’s really here to…it’s a sleep podcast, but I’m also very different. Maybe you’re very different, so we have that in…we share that. That’s one of the things that can keep us awake at night, is just those…that could be a feeling and a thought and a…it could be a triple-decker. Oh boy, so what was my point? When I tell you this tub story you’ll say, okay, makes sense. So…oh, so this podcast is different. That’s one thing. But of course if you’re…if you’re skeptical or doubtful if you’re new, that would make total sense as well, ‘cause I’m sure you’ve been promised things to put you to sleep in the past.

Maybe you’re like a lot of the other listeners, the regular listeners listening now, or the new listeners that say yeah, I’ve tried all this different stuff and none of it works, or it works for me like for a day or a week. I say, yeah, I’ve been there. That’s why I started making this show, as a matter of fact. So, that’s one thing; the podcast is different. It’s also not a podcast you really listen to. My job is…I’m here to keep you company and to take your mind off of stuff in a way that just barely engages you. So, you say, okay, I’m aware someone is talking and they may tell a story about a bed…a tub in the intro, the old bed tub. Ain’t no hole in the bed tub. Emmett Otter never sang that one. But if there was a bed tub, you’d probably want multiple holes in it. Putting a bed in a tub probably would put a crick in your neck, so don’t do it.

Yeah, I was just thinking of the term crick in the neck, but it’s spelled differently than creak, right? Okay, so…oh, so yeah, you don’t really listen to me. You just kinda look at me like you would observe water passing by in a stream. You say, okay, there’s some water going there. But you’re not really paying too much attention, so loosely listen or listen in a out-of-focus way like you’re looking at water or clouds. I don’t really actually put you to sleep, either. Even though this is a sleep podcast and I kinda started that whole…the sleep audio thing back in 2013, this podcast doesn’t put you to sleep. It’s here to keep you company while you fall asleep. So, I’m here to take your mind off of stuff while you drift off. That’s why the shows are over an hour, so you say, oh, I got plenty of time to fall asleep.

Here’s the other thing; you don’t even have to fall asleep. If you can’t sleep, I’m gonna be here, so listening to me is optional but there’s no pressure to fall asleep. My job is to keep you barely engaged and to keep you company whether you need it or not. If you can’t sleep, I’m gonna be here to the very end because there is a tiny percentage of listeners on a regular basis that can’t sleep, and then there’s people that yeah, situationally…I’m here to keep you company. I’m really here to apply for the role of bore-friend, bore-bud, bore-sib, bore-bestie, bore-cuz. Yeah, I guess I have an admission to make about not being perfect, I mean, definitely on multiple levels, but this tub story will show you.

So, a couple other things that if you’re new that can throw new listeners off…one is the structure of the show, other than all the other stuff I said and that I’m an acquired taste and that it takes two or three times to get used to the show. The structure of the show is very different, but it’s intentionally different. Show starts off with a greeting; friends beyond the binary, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, so you feel welcome. Then there’s business and listener support and that kinda stuff. That’s how we’re able to be here free twice a week, is the business at the top of the show and the business after the intro, before the episode. Then there’s an intro. The intro goes from like, minute four or minute six to minute twenty or so.

For new listeners, at first it can feel a little bit jarring, but for regular listeners it kinda serves a purpose. Then some new listeners, they get it right away and they start falling asleep or getting comfortable. Then a few people skip the intro. Three percent of listeners skip the intro, but for most people, the intro introduces the new person to the show. You get to know me. Particularly tonight, I’m gonna tell you a personal story. But it also gives you some space between your daytime and your falling-asleep time, whether you listen to the podcast while you’re getting ready for bed or as part of your wind-down routine or you’re in bed already, cozy and comfy. Regular listeners, it kinda helps ease you into bedtime. So, that’s the goal of the intro, and…because it goes for like, fifteen or twenty minutes, some people say, why?

I say, well, to give you some space, to set the sun, as we say, or as I’ve just said just now. So, that’s the intro, then there’s business, then there will be a bedtime story. Tonight will be a story of two siblings going on a small adventure on a long and winding road. I forgot their names, but…Icicles and Listicles. So, that’ll be interesting. Then there’s some thank-yous at the end. So, that’s the structure of the show. Like a lot of listeners said and I said earlier, this podcast is an acquired taste, so give it two or three tries before you give up on it, unless you really don’t like it already and you say, this is not for me, sir. I just don’t appreciate…and that’s fine. Not everybody likes me or the podcast.

I’m not even being…I’m not being snarky. I totally get it, and that’s…I have a website, sleepwithmepodcast.com/nothankyou. You could go there. There’s other sleep podcasts and sleep audio stuff because yeah, this is just…podcast just isn’t for everyone. So, that and…so, I don’t think I’ve ever told this story, or maybe I have. So, let’s see, the…2021 when I’m recording this. This must have been somewhere between 2010 and 2014. It could have been any year…any of those years, maybe even 2015, though probably not. I’m trying to think. My daughter was born in…well, I don’t want to say exactly, but so, we were visiting…it was the summertime and we were visiting…we were having a small family gathering. Me and my family try to get together in the summer and we have…go to a cabin on Lake Ontario.

But we’re…and this has never…hasn’t successfully happened, but this…whatever it was…maybe I…I think I did make the podcast at this time. I’m not positive, though. But let’s say it was 2014, just…or 2015 just for…I think, ‘cause yeah, I think it was after 20…whatever. So, whatever, it was one of those years. It was in the history of humanity. But so, I grew up in Syracuse, New York. We have our childhood home, and my parents were kind of living there, but mostly they had relocated to Florida. I’m the oldest of six kids, so…and our childhood home in Syracuse is…it was there and different people were living there at different times. But my mom had said, okay, this is…whatever this summer was, she said, I want you to come.

We got some work to do around the house, and if you have anything at the house, I want you to take it and get rid of it. This isn’t the important part of the story; this is just the setup of…just like a sleep podcast. But so, we were there, and then we also had to do a bunch of yard work. Like, not landscaping but weeding and that kind of stuff, really stuff I was not…I was like, I think this is part of my vacation. Meanwhile, my brother-in-law was working, so he was not on vacation and he was working remotely. He was working remotely from my parents’ basement downstairs on a computer. So, I was going indoors and…inside and outside, working on the lawn and whatever, weeding and stuff and cutting bushes and going inside, ‘cause my daughter was with me, and she…whatever, she was around six, seven years old or something.

So, we hadn’t been staying at this house. We had been staying at a cabin on Lake Ontario that doesn’t really have a bath or anything. It’s got a septic tank so you don’t really take…you kinda bathe in the lake because there’s not a lot of…you know, it’s like outdoor-living style. So, we…I said, why don’t you take a bath? Because this is a great opportunity with…at this house, you could take a bath. She says, okay, why don’t you start my bath for me? I’m doing something. So, I start running the bathtub, and the bathroom is right next to the room where my brother-in-law is working. I guess apparently this bathtub doesn’t have any sort of overflow thing or anything.

So, I start running the bathtub and I said, hey, brother, nameless brother-in-law, I’m running the bathtub for my daughter, so I’m gonna go back outside and work on the stuff…work on the lawn. Now, this wasn’t really…I did not ask his permission because he was working, so I made a big old A-S-S-U-M-E mostly out of me, but also it was my fault even though in the story and even in my own feelings sometimes, I say, well, I really am the one to blame. I made an A-double-S-U-M-E. So, I said, hey, just keep an eye on that tub or something. He said, yeah, yeah, yeah, but he was working doing tech support, so he was focused.

Then I went outside and I started doing more weeding, and probably mostly…I’ll be honest with you, I was…I don’t know how much weeding or cleaning I was doing, and more…I was probably doing more G-R-I-P-E-I-N-Ging. I mean, it was in the summer in Syracuse, New York, like 80%, 90% humidity. But so, whatever. I did lose track of time ‘cause we were doing stuff, and then I totally forgot about it. Then I heard all this yelling. Ended up, tub just kept on going and it filled up. It overflowed, filled the bathroom, then flowed out of the bathroom and surrounded my brother-in-law. He was actually unaware of it because he was…I think he had headphones on…and filled the room he was in, which had old carpet, so it even made the situation a little bit less not great. Then someone else came in and they said, what in the hey?

So…and then, yeah, for me, I probably tried to be like, well, why weren’t you paying more attention? But really, it was my fault. The tub overflowed. I have no idea what point that made, but just to share. If any of you out there feel like you’re a person, I’m a person too. That’s the kinda thing…think about…water was wasted. Ended up that the carpet…even…it was old anyway, so we had to tear that out. I don’t think my daughter took a bath ‘cause there was so much hullabaloo. But yeah, it…now it’s all okay, you know? These things happen. But I never would have thought…I guess…I think in my whole life, that’s the only time I remember that happening, where it was definitely…where I say, wait a second, how come I don’t lose track of filling up tubs all the time? I’m sure it happened before. Maybe not, though.

‘Cause usually…I mean, I think the water…I think the tub has some sort of mechanism for that, but if the water’s on, like you’re filling it up, it…you know what I’m saying. So, here’s my policy that I have, is only fill up the tub if you’re in the room — I mean, that’s probably what I should have stuck with — or set a timer on your phone. I don’t know actually…know what I was thinking. Maybe I was in the middle of a conversation where I couldn’t just sit there and let the tub fill. I think I was…don’t multitask. That’s more for me, not for you. Scoots, don’t multitask. So, I won’t tonight. My mind will put multiple things in the path of my task, but tonight I’m here for one thing and one thing only, for you, because you deserve a good night’s sleep. You deserve a place you could rest, and I want to help, so I’m glad you’re here. I appreciate you coming by. I work really hard. I yearn and I strive. I really want to help you fall asleep, and here’s a couple of ways I’m able to be here for you twice a week. Thanks.
