Episode 1253 – Benn Broughten by Crayon Rambler
[START OF RECORDING]
SCOOTER: Friends beyond the binary, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, holders of dice, rollers of dice, people who remember a time…or anyone who remembers having to put a Crayon on your dice, which I’ll try to explain…there’s a Crayon in my dice, oh my darling, my darling. That is not a song, but if you’re confused…you say, what in the name of dice…dice and…? For the love of…you got me crying at your Crayon rambles. Crayon rambles? That sounds like something I could sell. Is that anything like Crayon nubs? No…even my brain was crickets there. The Crayon Rambler…Crayon Rambler.
I guess…I thought this episode tonight was gonna be about one thing, but oh boy, we’re gonna be rambling about Crayons, 'cause it’s time for Sleep With Me, the podcast that’s here to keep you company and take your mind off of stuff so you could fall asleep. It is a podcast that puts you to sleep. Been making this show since 2013. It’s my honor to keep you company and be there, because you deserve a good night's sleep. But this show really is there to cut through the loneliness, the thoughts, the feelings, the physical sensations that are keeping you awake, and to be your friend and just take your mind off of stuff and kinda soothe you through nonsense. So, I’m so glad you’re here.
What we got coming up is…first there’s gonna be support — that’s how the show comes out twice a week; totally optional paying for it — then there’s a long, meandering intro meant to ease you into bedtime and to…as part of your wind-down routine or whatever you want to call it. Then there’s…later on we’ll do a bedtime story. This show is very different. It does take a couple tries to get used to; that’s what most regular listeners say just 'cause, one, all that filler word, right? Like, what? But also just that the podcast is something you kinda listen to and kinda keeps you company. So, I’m so glad you’re here. I work really hard. What’s next? Oh, and thanks for making it possible, my patron peeps.
INTRO: [INTRO MUSIC] Hey, are you up all night tossing, turning, mind racing? Trouble getting to sleep? Trouble staying asleep? Well, welcome. This is Sleep With Me, the podcast that puts you to sleep. We do it with a bedtime story. Alls you need to do is get in bed, turn out the lights, and press Play. I’m gonna do the rest. What I’m going to attempt to do is create a safe place where you could set aside whatever’s keeping you awake. It could be thoughts on your mind that you’re thinking about, thoughts about the past, the present, the future, thoughts about meaning…holy cow, no thank you. I don't need any…I don't know…you’re right, let’s just move on. Let’s just skip meaning altogether. What do I mean?
I mean thoughts, I also mean feelings, anything coming up for you emotionally related to those thoughts or that’s left over from the day or that’s…anticipation of stuff. It could be physical sensations, changes in time, temperature, routine, it could be work schedule or maybe you work a different shift, or you could be going through something, getting over something, be…have something coming up, or something else. The reason I go through all that stuff is to let you know you’re not alone, and maybe you don’t feel alone or maybe you don’t feel lonely, but a lot of people do, so that’s why I mention that, and to remind you even though this is a podcast, even though it’s kind of a together-alone, alone-together situation, that’s actually very important.
I daresay…not for me, but a powerful connection we get to share, like something I’m tentative to bring up, because it does feel so precious. Even though it’s kinda unexplainable and strange and indirect, what I mean is that a lot of us know what you’re going through even if we don’t know about it, because we’ve experienced something similar. We can relate to how it feels. Even if I’ve never been through something…the same thing that’s keeping you awake, there’s probably someone listening who has, and even if they haven’t been through the same thing, they can relate to how it feels. They say, yeah, that’s tough. Yeah, I can see why you can’t sleep. You really do deserve a good night's sleep, though. Or that maybe…probably they would just silently nod their heads in a loving way.
Let’s all…well, I don't know if I can do that. I’m…that’s too performative, but I can nod my head in a caring way. I don't know why I say…okay, now I’m…alright, maybe…if you put a smile on your face, it’s a little easier. But it’s true; I really am honored to get to make this show because of that, because I know how it feels. I know what it’s like, trouble getting to sleep, trouble staying asleep, trouble…whatever the other one is, dreading bedtime. I know what that feels like. So, that’s why I make the show. I also make it 'cause you deserve a good night's sleep. You deserve the sleep you need so your life is more manageable, and a bedtime where you could feel some solace and some respite, and that is extremely important because I know what it’s like when I don't have that, and I know what my life is like when I have it.
Life’s not even easy when you’re rested, right? How comes there’s no t-shirt that says that? Don’t ask; life’s not easy even when I’m rested. They’d say, well, probably 'cause that doesn't make…I mean, it makes sense, but not on a t-shirt. I’d say, well, what if we brand it with one of those sleepy characters? They’d say, but you’re pointing out the fact that you’re rested. Okay, thanks. Maybe I’ll make a shirt for some part of my brain that’s constantly contradicting my t-shirt ideas. I don't know if you could relate to that. I have a specialized part of my personality in my intellect or whatever…I don't know if that’s the super-ego…you know what? I think it feels like the id. I don't know what the id is, though who’s just there to contradict t-shirt ideas. They have a robust skill set.
You’d say, I don't know if you could call that maladaptive, 'cause you say…no, I’m just here to shoot down your t-shirt ideas. It’s just…I do serve a purpose, one purpose only, and rarely…I mean, for most humans, they don’t have that because they wouldn’t be called into action, but you ramble enough about stuff…that yeah, I’m here to take care of things. Bad t-shirt ideas; I’m here to contradict them. Wait a second, though, can I just point out a little…? This isn’t quite CBT. Are you sure you’re not contradicting every t-shirt idea? Could that be…by the way, do you think that…? Don’t contradict it; do you think that could be a t-shirt?
Because I gotta move on to the fact that if you’re listening, whatever’s keeping you awake, whatever it feels like, you deserve the rest you need so that your life is better and ideally that you get the rest you need on a regular basis and you could be out there flourishing, and that your world is a better place. Now, the way we do it on this show is I send my voice across the deep, dark night. I’m gonna use lulling, soothing, creaky, dulcet tones, pointless meanders, and superfluous tangents. I’m gonna go off-topic, I’m gonna get mixed up, I’m gonna forget about what I was talking about, then I’ll repeat it, then I’ll backtrack, then I’ll say, wait a second, another t-shirt idea. Then I’ll get distracted from that. So, a point…that’s what pointless meanders and superfluous tangents are.
All this is to keep you company so that you could fall asleep. This is a podcast you just kinda barely listen to, like elevated background noise or a friend who’s rambling who has no expectation of being heard. I’m just rambling for your…I wouldn’t say pleasure, but as a service to you. So, this is a podcast you kinda just listen to. It’s also a podcast that doesn't put you to sleep. I keep you company while you fall asleep. There is no pressure to fall asleep here. That’s why the shows are over an hour, and my job is really to be your bore-bae or your bore-sib or your bore-cuz or your bore-bestie or your neigh-bore, your bore-bor, your Borbie, your bores, your bore-bruh, your bore-friend, your friend who just talks in a boring way to help you fall asleep. So, that’s…yeah. I don't know what my point was.
Oh, it’s a podcast you…no pressure to fall asleep. Yeah, that’s why I’m gonna be here over an hour, 'cause there’s people listening who can't sleep or who wake up needing this podcast or who need a break during the day, so not only is there no pressure to fall asleep; I’m here to the very end whether you’re awake or asleep. I’m here to keep you company whether you’re listening or not. So, that’s important for me to share. What else? Oh, this podcast takes a lot…it doesn't take a lot of getting used to, but it does take two or three tries. It can take more or it could take two or three tries stretched over a period of six, seven years, as I’ve heard before, just because it is so different. So, when you first get to the show…I mean, if you’re having trouble sleeping, you’re already gonna be fed up if you’re like me.
You say, I don't know what this person’s gonna try to do here, and they don’t seem to be getting to the point, and they’re not very good at speaking, and I’m not so sure about this. Somebody recommended it or I found it or I searched for it, I saw it on a list…when are you gonna put me to sleep, man? When’s…? Talk about…are you sure you don’t need somebody…? What did you say, t-shirt counterpoint or something? You might need somebody for a rambling counterpoint. That’s a normal way to come to the show because, yeah, if you’ve had trouble falling asleep and you’ve tried different stuff, why wouldn’t you be doubtful? Well, let me tell you, the doubt goes on a little bit longer, 'cause it does take getting used to, too, 'cause maybe you were expecting something a little more Zen-like or meditative.
So, it just takes some…oh, this is a pod…oh, now I get it; he’s serious about his…he’s serious about nonsensical rambling. So, it just takes some getting used to to get to that point, so I understand. That’s why I say give it two or three tries. I also have a website set up, sleepwithmepodcast.com/nothankyou, because there’s so many people that feel so strongly that they’ll never listen again about when they first meet me audiorially or whatever that I want you to use that website if you say, I already can't stand you and I never will. I’d say, okay, well, let’s see, 'cause I’ve heard that before. But also, sleepwithmepodcast.com/nothankyou has other sleep podcasts and sleepy stuff on there. Maybe one of those will put you to sleep. Then it’s a win-win situation.
You don’t have to dunk on me and say…you don’t have to let me know and you find…and you fall asleep. So, there’s that. What else do you need to know? Give me more good news as a new listener. Okay, well, I’m here to be your friend…I mean, that’s…that you don’t have to listen to, and I do care. Those are the best pieces of good news, but the show is structured in a…because of the caring, actually, the show is structured in a very deliberate way. The podcast has evolved a lot over the first ten years of the show. So, the show starts off with a greeting; friends beyond the binary, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, then I say something silly. This time it was about dice and then I got distracted. Then that way you feel seen and welcome and you say, I could check that podcast out.
So, that’s the greeting, and you kinda get a general sense of what this podcast is gonna be. Then there’s support so the podcast is free. Most podcasts are free because of the support that the shows have. Then there’s a long, meandering intro meant to ease you into bedtime which is separate from the support, and it goes on about twelve to twenty minutes of me rambling, but it’s meant to ease you into bedtime. It does put a small percentage of people to sleep, and a small percentage of people skip the intro, but for most people, the intro is a way to introduce the podcast, hear what Scoots is rambling about…something new, probably, or in this case, t-shirt ideas or throw…not throw pillows. Point…not point…are there pillow…?
I’m sure there are pillows…pointillism pillows, but I was just…started thinking of tongue…what are those called, tongue-tires? No.
Tongue-twisters? Is that what it’s called? It doesn't sound right coming out of my mouth, does it? ‘Cause my tongue’s already twisted, but…is it tongue-twisters or tongue…? It’s not tongue-tires. It could be, though. It could be…it should be called tongue-stumblers, but that doesn't have alliteration. I already forgot what the…whatever the tongue-tire was about, anyway…slipped right out of my brain, so now I have no idea where I’m going. So…oh, why is the intro so long? Is it just support for the show? No, it’s…for a lot of regular listeners, it’s a way to ease you into bedtime. A lot of people are listening as they’re getting ready for bed or they’re doing their bedtime routine or their wind-down routine, and that’s what’s been shown to work — it works for me personally — is having a way to ease me into bedtime.
So, that’s what the intro does. Then there’s support between the intro and the show so the show could be free. There’s over six hundred ad-supported shows. There’s a lot of people that rely on that…the show, so that’s cool. Then there’s a bedtime story. I thought it was gonna be about one thing; it’ll probably be about Crayons. I don't know, we’ll see. Then there’s thank-yous at the end of the show. So, that’s the structure of the show. That’s why I make the show, and I’m really glad you’re here. I really appreciate you coming by. I work really hard. I yearn and I strive. I really hope I can help you fall asleep, and here’s a couple ways we get to do this for you for free twice a week.
Alright everybody, this is Scoots here, and this is a episode…this is a little behind-the-scenes first. I’ll just start out being honest with you, a little behind-the-scenes…only bedtime-level honesty, though. So, those of you that listen to the podcast for a long time know that the free and easy sound of the podcast comes from a lot of people working a lot of hours and all that kinda yadda, yadda, yadda stuff, and that we record the show in pieces. The episodes are recorded which…so, I just recorded the thank-yous for this episode. That’s the first thing I recorded. Now I’m doing the episode portion, story portion. So, if you’re listening to a story-only version of this episode, you’re only hearing this part and not the thank-yous and not the intro.
Then the intro and the Supporter Zone I’ll do sometimes the day after, sometimes the day before, sometimes…rarely the same day just 'cause it does take a lot more work than you hear and energy than…believe it or not, being this boring takes a lot of glucose from my…it does use a lot of brainpower. So, yeah, believe it or not…and so, sometimes what happens, though, is I record a intro for…I think it’s gonna be for one thing. You probably know this if you…but maybe you don’t, so I’m saying it again, 'cause this is a fairly unique situation we’re in right now…so that…I can't even find it. It was so long ago. You gotta be kidding me…is…so, okay, so usually…let’s see, today particularly is a Sunday. I’m recording a full episode. Tomorrow on Monday I will record an intro.
I’m not sure what the intro will be for, but I’ll be recording an intro for sure, and…but today I’m recording an episode for a intro I recorded a long time ago, but now I can't even find it. I wanted to…usually I have notes. I don't know why…just more pressing things have come up, and then every time I’ve gone…and I said, why don’t we record that episode? It just hasn’t happened. But today’s the day, because we need…the episode…the intro’s just waiting for the rest…it’s waiting for its partners with the thank-yous and the story. I was trying to figure out when I recorded it. I’m going through…okay, this is February when I’m recording this right now, and I don't see anything from February. I’m going through January and seeing what we recorded in January. It doesn't look like we recorded it in January.
Now I’m in December and I don't see it in December. So like, Whiz Kids, Multiplex 1…then we’re going into November. Ren…Ray faire…Ray at the Ren faire, Sushi Go! unboxing, Trader Joe’s Shopping 2…November 26, Ray Ren faire open? Question mark, question mark. That could be it. Space Quest II, bonus episode for Sleep With Me supporters, Sleep With Me+, Quest Busters Part 2, Journey Into the World of Friends review, Journey Into the World of Friends finale…this is early November. Then the holiday bonus episodes for the holidays and Journey Into the World of Friends finale…Toys “R” Us episode; that’s October. It couldn’t have been earlier than this, I don't think. Let’s just go back.
Santa and Mars, Journey Into the World of Friends Holiday, Ode to Silvan Beach, Fearless Flyer Fall 2023…September 28, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade…September, we were working on our 1,200th episode. Okay, well, I can honestly say I can't find it. Interesting stuff here. So…oh, there it is. Whoa, boy, it was a long…August 21, 2023. There’s not a lot of notes. It says, Crayon??? Question mark, question mark, question mark. So, it’s recorded August 21, 2023. So, that’s September, October, November, December, January…about five and a half months later I’m recording it. So, it’s…that may be a record on purpose. There’s been times I’ve made mistakes before and then forgotten to…like, recorded something that far out and forgot the intro or put the intro off.
Now, let me check my…if I made myself a voice memo. You won't hear it, but…just see if I have any communications with my…communique with myself. Okay, yeah, so…okay, here we go. So, I’m gonna play this. It’s only twenty-one seconds long. You won't hear it, but I will. Okay, so, good…really good news; that was a good twenty-one seconds of notes I made for myself, and I texted that to myself right after I recorded the intro, which is good, and it was actually…believe it…it was the last text I sent myself. So, we were taking a break that whole time, anyway. So, basically…so, this is meta, but it’s cool 'cause we’ll get into it, because…so, that helps me know…'cause you heard the intro, and here’s the thing; the episodes all have…they’re all recorded and mixed and audio-engineered so that they kinda have the same sound, right?
So, ideally, it’s pretty seamless. So, the six months or five-and-a-half months won't show any…but so, basically you heard an intro and now I’m…I didn’t listen to the intro. Sometimes I will, but I thought this would be interesting. So, this…I guess apparently…according to my voice memo, the title of this episode will be the Crayon Rambler. I could kinda piece together that initially I was recording the intro for Journey Into the World of Friends 'cause I was talking about twenty-sided dice, and forgot twenty…the old twenty-sided big farm…I think that was a different intro where I was joking about that. I said, I didn’t realize you couldn’t say…you’d have to say it plural with twenty-sided dice. Singular, it’s a twenty-sided big farm. But so…okay, so there’s a couple things.
So, first off was…my notes to myself were saying, okay, you want to start talking about…which was interesting. So, just in case…and I don't think this is the case anymore with friends of dragons everywhere and underground…favorite underground places…our cool-blooded friends’ roleplaying games. The first time I got the starter kit as a gift for the holidays — I’m assuming it was a holiday gift; it could have been a birthday gift — it was the red box, so I don't know what edition that was. But when you got the game, it came with the dice and everything so you could start your initial adventuring, and it also came with a Crayon, because you would take your dice…and I think in my case it was a white Crayon, and then you’d scrub on the dice and then you’d…the wax would go into the indentation for the numbers.
So, instead of painting the numbers, you were kinda painting them yourself, and then you’d wipe the rest of the wax off. I don't know, it was just a very tactile participatory process. I don't think that’s the case anymore. I don't know, though. I mean, I do know that I bought two different packs during…in 2020, or I’ve bought three, and I don't remember any of them. They’ve already been broughten…boughten. ‘Bought’ is the term, though, but…unless you’re playing…unless you’re buying…what’s that…what’s the name of the cheerleading movie? Bring It On the Roleplay…can you imagine that? Oh, boy. Bring It On: The Roleplaying Game. That sounds like something we should stop talking about, huh? ‘Cause you say, there’s no way to make that appropriate or sleepy.
So, let’s just move on. Bring It On: The Roleplaying…don’t…Roleplaying Game. Never mind. I mean, I guess it could be, but you’d have to be…it’d have to be very…I don't know. I’m sure somebody did it. Okay, Bring It On: The Roleplaying Game…yeah, you’d choose your character. You could be…I didn’t see the movie. Let’s just lean into this, right? This is another thing about these episodes. Let’s lean in since I’m doing the Crayon rambles. Have we ever looked up Bring It On? I guess at some point I should watch the movie. Bring It On came out in 2000. Oh boy, that’s not the article I’m looking for. Bring It On film…Peyton Reed, director, Jay…Jaysica…Jessica Bendinger was the writer. Kirsten Dunst, Eliza Dushku, Jesse Bradford, Gabrielle Union…two high-school cheerleading teams…preparations for the national competition.
Okay, so, reminiscent of the one…man, my mind is so under pressure it has…I was gonna say, isn’t it like that movie about the thing? That was in college, though. So, I think that would be…for starters, it would be Bring It On…we’d have to…we’d place it in college if it was a roleplaying game for obvious reasons, even though there won't be any of that…you say, Bring It On: The Roleplaying Game…meant to be played at a kitchen table. Whatever you…later, whatever, but this is…takes place in college or after college. Here’s a movie picture, Bring It On…why can't there be a Bring It On…? I’m sure…again, this is an idea I’m pitching; not for free taking, by the way. But we could reach out. Bring It On…people my age. You say, nobody wants to see that. You shouldn’t…but I already had been boughten.
But yeah, Bring It On, the…okay, so, let’s learn about the movie Bring It On, then we’ll set it in college and we’ll imagine it as a roleplaying game even though I was supposed to be talking about Crayons. This is somewhat interesting. Okay, so, Bring It On was released in August of 2000, so it looks like the last weekend in August. It was a box office success, the number-one spot…this is how popular it is. That line, which I’m only presuming is from the movie, ‘it’s already been broughten’, is still relevant to me even though I never saw the movie, which I’m admit…I don't think…it’s a cult classic. Maybe I should watch it. Okay, so, worldwide gross; $90 million. There were six direct-to-video sequels, none of which had the original cast; Bring It On Again, Bring It On: All or Nothing, Bring It On: In It to Win It, Bring It On: Dance Off to the Finish, Bring It On: Worldwide Cheer, and the TV film, Bring It On: Cheer or Sleep.
Okay, there will be multiple spoilers here. Oh no, this is college. Okay, great. That’s even better. That’s good. Okay, I’m more comfortable talking about this or seeing the movie 'cause it takes place in college. I don't know, it’d just be a little…though I mean, one of my favorite actresses was in I’m A High-School Cheerleader, or whatever. That’s a cult classic whose name I can't…the movie I can't…I think it’s…I’m A High-School Cheerleader, is that what it’s called? Anyway…okay…oh, Natasha Lyonne; that’s…sorry, I forgot to…okay, so…okay, Torrance Shipman…oh, is in Rancho Carne High School, San Diego, boyfriend is at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Okay, and they’re going for a national…six national title.
Torrance is the next team captain replacing Big Red after she graduates, but then…wait a second, Torrance Shipman…who’s Carver? After…oh, teammate Carver is injured, has to sit the season out. Then Missy Panatone…Pantone, gymnast from Los Angeles with her brother Cliff…okay, then Missy says the Toros plagiarized their cheers from Torrance, and then they go to LA to watch the East Compton Clovers from Missy’s previous high school, who they competed against, and they perform another routine. Isis is the captain, and it reveals that Big Red videotaped the Clovers’ routines and basically copied them for the Toros. Torrance says, oh no. Also, she dropped the Spirit Stick, which is never supposed to touch the ground.
So, the Clovers say, okay, we’re gonna go against you in the national…versus the Toros in the national competition, which they weren’t in last year because they’re better cheerleaders. Okay, then Torrance and Cliff begin to get to know each other, and Aaron grows more distance. After Torrance informs the Toros about the routines, the team votes including…in favor of using a current routine. Torrance agrees 'cause there’s no time to use their new routine, while Missy reluctantly goes along with it. So, I don't know who’s…plays who, either, but that said…when do they say ‘it’s already been broughten’ is my question. Bring It On; it’s already been broughten…I guess at that point, right…? Okay. Toros’ home game…Isis and the teammates perform the routine in front of the whole school.
Wait, the Toros’ next…Isis and her teammates…oh, so the Clovers come to a Toros game, do their routine, then after advice from Aaron, Torrance recruits…something. They hire a choreographer; Sparky Polastri, and…who’s not nice. I don't know who plays Sparky, and that doesn't go well. Torrance speaks to the competition, learns their choreographer provided that routine for six other teams. But they’re the defending champs, so they do get to defend their crown, but they’ll need a new routine. Big Red says, you’re not a leader, Torrance. Okay, so this is part of Torrance’s thing. Then they don’t steal…okay, this is a lot…this is a really detailed…this has every single plot detail. Some movies don’t have this in here. Sorry.
This is very sleepy, though. I mean, not because of the movie; just 'cause it is, 'cause I already lost my place. Okay, so they get to go to Daytona Beach. Torrance is not doing…as leader…considers quitting; okay, moment of time and change or whatever they say. Aaron tells Torrance to step down as captain, and team rivals Courtney and Whitney…Cliff sees Torrance and Aaron together and breaks up with her, severs his friendship. Torrance breaks up with Aaron. He’s distanced…believing her, obviously. Oh, he’s not…yeah, he’s also not very loyal. She uses Cliff’s previous encouragement and has personally made a mix tape for an inspiration to have a new routine. The Clovers are also unable to attend. They need more funding to get to the nationals. Torrance tells her father to sponsor the team. Isis refuses because it says, yeah, you just feel guilty from copying us.
Instead, the Clovers get on a talk show and they get their funds through that, and then the Clovers and the Toros make it to the final, Cliff cheering on the team, and Torrance and Isis end up giving each other both last-minute advice. One team wins; the other team comes in second, obviously, but with a newfound…I won't spoil that part, a newfound respect, and a also blossoming love. Okay, here’s the cast. Kirsten Dunst was Torrance Shipman. Eliza Duchku was Missy Pantone. Jesse Bradford; Cliff Pantone. Gabrielle Union is Isis. Claire Kramer is Courtney. That’s Whitney’s best friend. Anyway, we…I don't have to go on and on and on, huh? I just want to know who Big Red…okay, who said ‘it’s already been broughten’ is what I want to know. I don't know. Production…this was pitched as Clueless meets Strictly Ballroom.
Then…yeah, there’s this theme of cultural appropriation. It was passed over twenty-eight times before finding a home. Wow, that’s cool that…I mean, it’s not cool it got passed over twenty-eight times, but that Jessica Bendinger stuck with it. Okay, casting…everybody was expected to have a cheer prepared. They wanted to use as little stunt doubles…Reed and Union met numerous times to discuss the best way to approach her character. Oh, Peyton Reed is the director; okay. Filming…reception, and…63% on Rotten Tomatoes. Metacritic; 52 out of 100. They have a lot of…this is a really well-researched…accolades…number 30 on the Best 50 High School Movies.
Legacies…it’s been lauded as a rare team film to address issues of systemic inequality, cultural appropriation, intersectional feminism…those are seen as the major factors for the film’s continued legacy, and it holds up well twenty years later. Bring It On can be often overlooked and ostracized. Let’s see, okay, Bring It On…five sequels we talked about. There’s also a stage musical, Alliance Theatre in Atlanta…came out January 16, 2011. Oh, Lin did it, with Tom Kitt, Amanda Green, Jeff Whitty…let’s see…and let’s see where else…national tour started in 2011, and after an open number that truly dazzles…the score hits its stride. Musical opened on Broadway and it was on Broadway for a little bit. Let me just check on more thing here. Don’t know if any of this helps me thus far with coming up with a…what do you call that thing?
What do you call it? Okay, so a roleplaying game…I guess maybe I’m stretching it, right? But it could be. It could be within…I know there’s all these new roleplaying systems, right, that are pretty flexible, but maybe it could also be one of these more real-world games. No; I was trying to think if it could be like…Stevie B, our friend, our favorite know-it-all, is big into this game that I’ve been meaning to check out. What do they call them? I don't know what they’re called, but it’s…the Tears of the Clock Tower, it’s called. I mean, it’s called something else, but it’s one of those games…none of the games you can say…there’s a popular show on NBC right now about it, and then there’s a game…all of us stay…Among Us; I guess you can that one, yeah. But I don't really understand the mechanics of those games.
But okay, so either one, we’d have to kind of identify other roles, which…so, this is one thing…so, obviously there’s the choreographer. That’s a role, right? Then there’s the leadership role, which I kinda think should be…there’s…I mean, okay, so we could go into like, what are your areas of expertise? Choreography, like music choices, which kind of could help with the choreographer, leadership, charisma, gymnastics, which is already a skill, but these aren’t exactly…you’re right, brain…finances; you need somebody with finances. What else? Flair; flair is a good one. You’re right; flair. So, these would be different…would those be…? I don't know any…attributes? I guess we could use…but what about use of magic? You’re right. Would this be a roleplaying game without magic? No.
So, I guess then we’d have to…so, it’d probably be better in a different universe, right, if we’re having…Bring It On in our…Bring It On: The Roleplaying Game, in our world, you’d say, okay, well…again, you’d say, well, what adventures other than winning the national championship and then whatever…? You’re kind of grasping at straws if you’re gonna have a roleplaying game. It’d be very niche. I’d say, obviously. It’d be very niche, probably only on a sleep podcast, but to move beyond it…you say, okay, so it would…I guess this is a long-winded way of saying it would have to…maybe it could happen in a Bring It On universe, so that would help with the other movies, like make them as part of the game. So, that would help with the other movies, folding them in, 'cause they would have had to flush out some sort of Bring It On…larger Bring It On universe there.
But I still say it would have to be a universe…a cheer-based universe, right? Would it be a cheer-based economy? I think this lends ourselves…okay, just hear me out here. I think we’re closer to a solution than we are further, because we do have a world that this fits in…the larger context of the world, which is the world of Doctor Triangle and Isosceles. ‘Cause you say, okay, so…and then, also…which was influenced by Station Eleven…after I read Station Eleven, that’s when I was like, huh, what if…? That’s where I kind of started pondering ideas for Doctor Triangle and Isosceles. So, I think that’s a good world for Bring It On. That would be the universe that Bring It On is…the roleplaying…where the role…that would be the general situation. So, groups who cheer, cheerers or cheerleaders…let’s just say cheerleaders.
Actually, in some sense, it’s like, yes, in this world, that’s actually what we do; we lead through cheer. Just like Doctor Triangle and Isosceles or like the characters in Station Eleven, whether you’re watching the show or the film…I mean, the show or the book…the cheerleaders…so, there’s…it’s a larger world, right? But it’s a world where…I mean, there’s…so, we have a lot of benefits for…we don’t have…again, we’d have to build it into the lore of why cheerleaders, but this does make a lot of sense. As pooh-poohing it as some parts of us may say…okay, so we have cheerleaders…I mean, it’d be cool if it was cheerleaders between eighteen and seventy years old, too. They say, yeah, we have our cheer squads, right?
You could go…you could say, there’s…we also have dance teams, whatever you want to call it, but we’re just using the term…so, we could loosen up the term ‘cheerleader’, obviously. But you’d say, okay, cheerleaders…advantages for this world that has some extra challenges than the world we live in. Okay, teamwork; that’s one, like ability to live…work and live in community or at least existing community, 'cause communities are gonna…so, a sense of commute…teamwork and a sense of community, a leadership structure; those are all kinda intertwined, a ability to be gatherers and looker-forers, you know? Resource…as the saying…resource management, I guess is a way to say it in a game context and a sleep podcast context.
Because you say, okay, we…a lot of us are very athletic, fast, or can jump or can move. Not only physically flexible, but maybe flexible in many other ways with thinking and creativity. So, yeah, we have the ability to gather resources maybe a little bit more efficiently than other groups or communities. So, we can deal with some of the challenges of this universe. Now, the world of Doctor Triangle and Isosceles, they had a more specific thing, but we’re going a little bit broader, right? Because in Doctor Triangle and Isosceles, that was a world without math, and I guess…but it was a world…what would the world be like without math? Then these two characters are going through the universe performing and teaching people lessons about math, you know, in a world that kinda forgot…stopped believing in math.
Said, oh, math doesn't…what would happen if…? That was the other thing, was like, what if Station Eleven…that kind of world, but what and why…what happened? Okay, well, in this world, people just stopped believing in math. They said, math? Don’t buy it. Don’t need it. Don’t want it. Forgot what it was. What if there was demigods and goddesses and gods and goddesses based on all of that? But we don’t have to get that specific with the cheer groups because in a world with more challenging resources, they would have certain advantages. Then you could say, well, how do they acquire…? If there’s…how do they acquire…? Then you could have different alignments of cheer groups, right? Because then you have the cheer groups that want to build more community within communities.
So, similar to Doctor Triangle and Isosceles and Station Eleven, they maintain their funding or some of their resource-gathering by going places and leading through cheer. That could be also a way they sustain their community, 'cause some people keep traveling with the group and some people won't, or they could stay and be a larger community. Say, oh yeah, we got two cheer squads that live here, and when we’re feeling…every day they got…we got a AM cheer, midday cheer, evening cheer. On the weekends, we got nighttime cheers. We even have small…that could be…okay, now we’re getting more and more into it. So, then you could have a even more developed world. So, you get these…a city-state type world, and then again, you could have…then you could get into some sort of structure, like a more formal one.
Then you could say, okay, instead of…so, this would be a little bit different. There was a movie about it that came out when…I think it was before I was born. I don't know why it was…but it was about roller derby being…and I think it was…it got remade, too, and it was basically like, what if instead of our city states wasting…this would be such great leadership, actually. So, maybe the cheerleaders should…I mean, the leaders of the cheerleaders…as long as their definition of ‘bring it on’ is with love and kindness and tolerance, they should be leading this world. They say, yeah, well, instead of wasting resources to gather resources, which seems like a lot of like what happens in these kind of worlds, even the worlds of adventure…you say, okay, well, we’re gonna go put on some plate armor and dance…do a dance-off in plate armor ‘til one of us is so tired we…and they say, well, that’s not a great use of anybody’s resources.
First off, you know how much work it takes to make plate armor, and you gotta gather…? That’s great, but couldn’t we just use that for something else? Then, why would you dance-off with each other, especially if you’re gonna do it in isolation? When you could have a cheer-off, one, within the word, part of the goal is spreading cheer. So, this has this…maybe Joygerm Joan is the matriarch leader of this whole thing. Joygerm Joan was part of my childhood, somebody that had…that tried to spread joy throughout the world. She comes up on the episodes every once in a while. She had a foundation called the JoyGerm Foundation, and its whole purpose was to spread joy. But cheer is a little bit different, but it’s not that different, right? So, that’s cool. Okay, so then…okay, but so, yeah, that would be interesting.
So, Joygerm Joan, her character has created the…I mean, if we wanted to make…this is a game, not a movie, but you always have to have some sort of equally-strong opposing force. I prefer also to have it in environmental conditions and then maybe a ticking clock or something, but we could…that can all be figured out, or the DM could figure that out, or the cheerleader, the CL. Yeah, I’m running this game. So, yeah, then there could be…that could be the general thing, is like, okay, then you’re preparing for these cheer-offs between your different city states. I don't know if that would be a game mechanism; that could just be part of the game’s lore of why is so…why is cheerleading so important. You say, well, didn’t Scoots just explain it over the past fifteen minutes and it didn’t make any sense, but it did?
I say, okay, well…but then you would have ventures, right? ‘Cause…and you would be friends, more than likely, with the people on your cheer squad, so then you could go on smaller adventures with them, or you’d be trying to make an adventure. Yeah. Then there could be magic, I think, and science, a form of science that’s magic or alchemy, 'cause you say, okay, well, our cheers are gonna have special effects. Or, yeah, if you combine this, this, and this, it produces this result. Then you have…you could raise your teams in…like a buff. You say, okay, but this…if we do these…combo with our magic-style cheerer, then we could have double endurance or inspiration that would be good…instead of magic, one of those things could be inspiration instead of…I don't know, mana. ‘Cause you say, oh yeah, we’re extra-inspiring.
I say, are you inspiring your team or the audience, right? Or, again, if you were working from the other side, you’d say, you de-inspire or deflate or be a downer. Maybe it is a thing of the video…the movie, since it’s a classic. It is like, oh, in the world before, right? These…so, all the characters…particularly from the main movie, it sounds like, 'cause it seems like it had a great message, too. Also, the…all the other movies are like the historical texts, right? Could we talk about that? I never read the book Canticle for Leibowitz, but I meant to. But I think I understand the basic concept. So, in this movie, that is the text, Bring It On, the movie. But again, then you could have suddenly this gathering force of saying, well, I’ve decided to…that it’s already been…I’m gonna bring it for another reason.
Instead of the solution that seemed like it was reached in the movie…the movie started with taking without permission, right? Appropriating or whatever, and…but it ended in some sort of collaborative respect or…I don't know. I’m just reading the Wikipedia article. Let’s not get too deep. But the opposing force could be still on that, of like…and then of course you could have the different tones of that, like conformity. Oh no, we only cheer like this. In the gray world, this is how we cheer, just like that sleep podcast. We don’t bring anything on. We just talk like this. Don’t do…don’t bring anything on. Just make it sleepy. You say, okay, but I don't know, man. So, it hasn’t already been broughten? But I’m just trying to think of ways to make it more interesting. I guess all the high schools of the old world could be somehow forgotten.
So, those could be places that go on smaller adventures instead of going underground or to colleges; yeah, be like, okay, we’re gonna go back…the university in Nebraska’s been forgotten. We’re gonna go there. We’ve heard lore of singing deep within the Athletic Center, and we’re gonna go there and find out…and then you have another quest. The thing is we’d have to…usually they’re cheer squads, so these would be more smaller squads, which does not necessarily…so, I’m just trying to fink about how we’d put a good…fink…I’m trying to think of how we’d put a good context around that, right, of like, why is it only between four and seven cheerers instead of what I would imagine is somewhere between ten and fifteen? Yeah, I don't have a clear answer to that.
I guess…I mean, I guess you could have NPCs that you pick up that are gonna be in your performances, maybe? But I guess, yeah, in a world that’s changed, you say, yeah, no, the cheer squads or cheer teams are much smaller now just because the world has changed. It’s totally normal to cheer with…if you have a cheer in your heart, then you could cheer with something that rhymes with…you don’t always need another to take part. You just let your cheer outside yourself and cheer and cheer and cheer, and you’ll feel cheer as wealth. That was the sage wisdom passed down from Joygerm Joan, I guess. So, I think we’re…I think there’s still some holes. I’m just trying to think of the biggest holes in Bring It On: The Roleplaying Game.
I guess learning about a whole new universe…again, you could set it very…the other thing would be to go very specific specificity; so, whenever the movie is transferred to college, whatever the imaginary college is, and then you just have some…it’s more of like a shorter adventure, a mini-adventure. So, then you need to gather…you have to gather a squad, training, equipment, experience points…so, you’d have to do other forms of cheering, like specific missions. I guess that would make sense. You say, okay, well, the freshman class locally can't…go to the high school and teach freshman-class math through cheering. You could…yeah, you could gather resources so the high school would be…lunch would be a good one.
Yeah, so then you could have a adventure of lunch and navigating that, making up different adventures at lunchtime. What else could we have? A fundraiser, so they have to do a fundraiser, a pep rally where no one feels any pep or any reason to rally…affecting other outcomes…they could do something…like, can we raise the test scores of the school through cheering? I guess the adventurers could choose; do we want to help the athletic teams? Do we want to help the…? How come there’s no cheerleaders at the math…or the math competition or something else, right? What about esports, cheering for esports? So, they could choose to do that. You could really cloak it in…if this was some sort of crafty parent that’s smarter than me, you’d be like, okay, now you gotta do your homework.
That’ll get you fifty experience points for your characters. Don’t use your phone after 7:00; you get this many experience points. So, I guess there’s other things, but that’s kind of like…I think that’s a fairly…a reasonable idea. You could listen to all the soundtracks. You could listen to the soundtrack from the musical why you play. You could have all the characters from all the movies be…all the movies could be other scenarios, right, that you get to play through. I don't know, the whole…I’m not saying this about the movie; it’s just, you can't…then they’re a little bit too on the rails, right? So, they don’t have as much open-worldness, even though all the adventures…just take a little bit of work, you know? More work than a sleep podcast.
But this also kinda gives you an idea of what happens when I thought I was gonna talk about one thing, then I put it off 'cause I said, okay, at some point we’ll make that episode about the Crayon Rambler. I don't know, this…I don't think this will be a regular series, but there’s definitely other Crayon-based episodes, and we’re gonna do coloring on Sleep With Me+ for coloring pages. So, I guess when this episode comes out, that’ll encourage me to get that started, because Emily’s been making coloring pages for all our art for the show, so that’s exciting to do, is to have that. So, that’s another exciting thing Crayon-related. But yeah, this was rambling. I thought I was gonna ramble about Crayons and then I misspoke about, whatever, boughten, and that’s where we went. So, I’m glad to be able to get to do this. It’s fun to carry you off into dreamland. Goodnight.
