Throwing in a bonus meandering intro
I think I just buffered
I’m gonna buff the heck out of this safe place
Let’s pretend I’m a 16 year old with a shiny car
Man, if only there were Permanent Shine
I’m gonna super cache this safe place while buffering
SWM: The podcast that puts the Buff in buffering
The super cache can take it all
Our Super Cache comes padded
The ability to debuffer at 87 tetrahertz
Hopefully you’ve already figured out that you don’t need to listen
Butter-buffed and Buttered
Tongue Twisters and Comforting Words are very close
Buffered is relaxing, Buffering not so much
Buffed, Buttered, and Buffered
Permanent Shine via repurposed particle colliders
Project Permanent Shine
One more question from my internal press corps
The world will be buffered one day
STORY
I was thinking of snow
An extended meandering about snow memories
New perspectives on old Scoots stories
All the way to Central New York
To the 315
A notoriety for being snowy, wet, and cold
Snowy, but not in the Snow Belt
I think the snow is due to the moisture in the air from the Jet Stream and the Great Lakes
I have city pride for how much precipitation Syracuse gets
It’s really nice to visit, but tough to live there
I need access to sunlight
A sleep tip: as soon as you wake up, get up right away
Don’t touch that phone!
Then I like to make my bed
The Great Pillow Makeout
I was never like this until I started the podcast
Then I immediately open my back door and go outside
I’m not sure if you’re into heavy breathing, but it’s great
Sometimes I’m up before the sun
I just try to get outside and listen to the outside
And I do this at night, too
I suffer from Meditation Avoidance
Have we reached Peak Meditation?
I was hoping Buddha would ring up my brain in that moment
Ok, enough sleep tips for now
Let it snow!
The bus stop I’d trudge to
I can’t picture Karl and Sheila walking with me to the bus
Grammar School Memories
We lived on a steep hill, and the bus stop was at the bottom
I guess we had raincoats for when it was raining
Sheila, for the record, I did try to call you last night but my phone was being weird
A Preponderance of Slush, from road salt
Slush is not Slushies
I have unfortunately tasted slush before
It’s mostly just salty snow with hints of grit and metal
When snow combines with snow, warm air, and road salt
A puddle of slush is neither liquid or plasma
It’s matter in the middle of a change
I’m not sure why it’s gray – from the salt, maybe?
Road salt has a stark beauty
I’m a big fan of grays
Syracuse, the Gray Planet
My primary interactions with slush
Most exposure came from walking home from the bus
We’d all walk at our own pace
I’d like to dilly dally in the slush
Some unbelievably high snow banks
I’d start imagining I was a giant or a mountain climber
Perhaps some snowball play
Do some snowdiving or snowbank jumping
The corner of driveways was always high because of street and driveway plowing
Slush exists mostly at the bottom of the snowbanks
Bill Nye, please reach out
I’m not sure if the road is dirty or if it’s the salt itself
The slush is gross, but not super gross
Cars would spray slush into the sides of the banks
The slush zone was great for pretending to be a giant
Cars would accumulate slush underneath and then would break off into Slushbergs
Like a liquid with an invisible wax coating
No offense to Slushee Makers
I loved to make dams with slush
The great thing about building a dam is the futility of it all
The inevitability of a Greek drama
My backpack would be at risk of being soaked from the water being dammed
Billy, a great figure in my childhood
When I was in grammar school, he was in high school
He was the good kind of bad boy AND a redhead
He repaired motorcycles and rode snowmobiles in the winter
A legendary figure in my childhood
The BB kids were actually bad bad boys
I spent a lot of my childhood building myths out of my life
Billy was, quite simply, cool
I always fantasized that I would ride on his snowmobile
My mom wouldn’t allow that, but I did get to ride it one time
He let my brother Karl ride it before me
Memories of Snowmobiling
Down the street was a big golf course
This was pre-Golf Course Developments
The 18th hole was at the bottom of the street
This was an amazing place to go sledding
You only go sledding twice a year
You push the envelope too much, too soon
I lived in the age of plastic sleds
The metal ones (aka toboggans) were too heavy and fast
Orange plastic sleds from KMart
Let me explain golf poorly
There’s 3 different kinds of tees
Aunt Helen was the best golfer in our family
It was a steep hill and also looooong
You could go really far from just sledding down this hill
The lightest version of extreme sports
Conditions really dictated how fun it was
The basic kinds of sleds
2-person plastic sleds that you could probably fit 3 kids in
The same plastic that kiddie pools are made of
The older kids would always make the jump
I was better at pretending to be an engineer than actually engineering jumps
If it was icy, it stunk to go up the hill, and you might get an ow-y
The circle sled aka the dish
I’m not sure if plastic or aluminum would go faster
You couldn’t really control your direction with the dish sleds
The Radio Flyer was a classic metal sled
A very Norman Rockwell kind of sled
Trying to explain a toboggan
Only an adult would show up with a toboggan
My Uncle Eddie’s toboggan had padded seats
It seated 6 but had no control at all
The Joy of Collective Experience
I don’t remember a lot of inner tube sledding from my childhood
How to build the best jump
This was the first chance as kids to get high with adrenaline
An opportunity for braggadocio
The sounds of laughter and yelling
Sweating was good because then you’d get warm
Boredom or someone crying
Even just lying in the fresh snow would be great
Lying in Deep Powder
So warm and secure
