Episode 1290 – Friends Forever | Dreaming of Newhart S1E2
[START OF RECORDING]
SCOOTER: Friends beyond the binary, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, it’s time for the podcaster that’s here to keep you company in the deep, dark night. I don't know why I’m saying that. I guess maybe it’d make it…let’s try that, the deep, dark night. Try to make it welcome…I don't know, maybe if we say it with joy. Is that aplomb? I don't think it is, but I might have to look that up later. If we say it with joy and welcome it, will it make it less…? I guess it won't…you can't say it with joy and make it less deep and dark, because then it would be contradictory…if we say, welcome to the deep…podcast that keeps you company in the deep, dark night. This is the beginning of the podcast, so I can kinda be verbally joyous.
But hey, deep, dark night, we’re welcoming you. No offense, you’re not exactly…you don’t…I don't know, there’s just something that doesn't feel welcoming about you. I know that sounds judgmental, deep, dark night, but we’re trying this out. Now…and there’s a lot of people trying this podcast out for the first time, so, welcome. This is Sleep With Me. It’s a little bit different of a podcast. It’s a sleep podcast we’ve been making over…or, not over eleven years, but this is the eleventh calendar year. I don't know, I got mixed up there. But, you know…oh, it’s different; that’s what I was gonna say. This show does take some getting used to. That’s what not everybody says, but most listeners, particularly people that are fans of the show or they support the show directly.
I just heard from someone yesterday that said, yeah, I was one of those people. It took two or three tries for me to get used to the show. So, that’s normal. It’s just it’s so different. I mean, who would bring this kind of energy at the start of a sleep podcast? Well, your friend, 'cause I’m here to keep you company in the deep, dark night and distract you and to make things a little bit more comfortable and comforting than just to put you to sleep. So, what we got coming up is support, and that’s how we keep the podcast available to everybody, is the people that support the show directly and the people that support the sponsors. Then there’s a long, meandering intro meant to ease you into bedtime.
I would say try out…if you’re…first few times listening to the show, try out the show with the intro, but we also have Bedtime Stories From Sleep With Me that doesn't have intros, that just goes straight to the bedtime story. But at first, the kinda…intro gets…it’s a get-to-know-you period and it is a large number of people’s favorite part about the show, probably the only part of the show they hear, but I’ll explain more about the intro later 'cause it’s really designed to keep you company and ease you into bedtime, and then there will be a story. Tonight it’s called…this is the second episode we’re making of it. It’s either Dreaming of Newhart or Newhart’s Dreams, and it’ll be interesting and meandering and ease you into bedtime. So, that’s it. I’m really glad you’re here, and just see how it goes.
Everybody that supports the show, supports the sponsors, or supports the show on Sleep With Me+ or Apple Podcasts, thank you so much for making this possible, everybody that’s on our referral program that refers people to the show, thank you so much, and all of you that listen on a regular basis out there, the sleepy, silent majority that enjoy the show, thank you so much. I’m so happy to be here and that we’re all able to welcome anybody new in checking this show out for the first, second, or third time, because we’re really all a part of this together, and I know that right now. So, thanks again for coming by, and these are the ways we’re able to do this for you for free twice a week.
INTRO: [INTRO MUSIC] Hey, are you up all night tossing, turning, mind racing? Trouble getting to sleep? Trouble staying asleep? Well, welcome. This is Sleep With Me, the podcast that puts you to sleep. We do it with a bedtime story. Alls you need to do is get in bed, turn out the lights, and press Play. I’m gonna do the rest. What I’m going to attempt to do is to create a safe place where you could set aside whatever’s keeping you awake; thoughts, things on your mind, thoughts about the past, the present, the future, feelings, anything coming up for you emotionally or that’s there or underlying feelings. It could be physical sensations, it could be changes in time, temperature, routine, you could be going through something, you could be traveling.
Whatever it is, I’m here to keep you company and take your mind off of stuff so you could fall asleep. The only reason I go through that stuff is…two reasons. One is so you know you’re not alone going through this. The deep, dark night, we welcomed it earlier, but it is…and it’s not lonely for everybody. It can have a different flavor for different people. But for a lot of us, loneliness is a part of it or something like that, some…maybe it’s a feeling before that. What do they call that? A primordial…I think it actually is. I’m not…it is a…I’m feeling primordial feelings right now. Not in this moment, but with my sleep. I’m going through something, I’m traveling, I’m sharing a room, a twin…I’m in a twin bed and one of my siblings is in the twin bed next to me. It’s been different ones at different times, and I’ve just been…my sleep has not been consistent.
Yeah, how it can feel…sorry, I got interrupted there by a garbage truck going by. Oh, I was saying sleep…trouble getting to sleep hasn’t been too bad, but it’s staying asleep, right? It’s different for everybody every time. But when I wake up, I don't know, it has a certain feeling to it, right? I guess the important thing isn't describing what it is for me, but for you to know that I can probably relate to how you feel. Even if I’m not going through the same thing that you are that’s keeping you awake or you haven't been through the same things I’ve been through, we can probably relate to the…some of the feelings. The thing is that the people during the day, a lot of people in our lives, they can't relate to the feelings, right? That’s why we…one of the things that brings us together and…or that we have in common.
Here’s the thing; it even goes deeper, because part of you might be saying, dude, you can't relate to what I’ve been through or you haven't been through something similar, and you’re right about that. The great news is there’s enough people listening to this around the world that there is someone listening right now who can relate to how you feel, that has been through what you’ve been through or something very similar. Not only that, they’re perking up in bed right now and they’re like, yeah, yeah, yeah, I do know what you’re going through and I’m really glad you’re here listening to this podcast, and I really hope it can help you fall asleep like it’s worked for me. They’re welcoming in…and they hope that so much that one day, if this podcast happens to help you out, that you’ll be holding that place for somebody else new.
As…whatever, digital and pseudo and whatever other words there are for this kind of stuff, it’s real. It may be this has happened in the the past, the present, the future, or by ones and zeroes, but it’s real. I can feel it and I know other people can, too. But it’s not for everybody. You don’t have to feel it, either. The other part of this thing, this show, and the purpose of it, is to remind you that you deserve a bedtime where you can get the rest you need. You might not get it every time and you might have nights tossing and turning like I’ve been having, but you deserve a bedtime you don’t have to dread, a bedtime you could look forward to or at least feel neutral about, and the rest you need so your life is more manageable.
That is important to me and I know it’s important to you, and you deserve that, and I hope this show can provide it. Or, I’ll have a website…well, I’ll talk about it next, where you could probably find something else if this podcast doesn't work for you. But, I don't know, now I got mixed up. But yeah, you deserve a bedtime and some rest where your life is more manageable, and then ideally you get that on a regular listener basis and you could be out there flourishing, and that means our world’s a better place to be in. Now, this podcast is not for everybody. For the people it works for, give it two or three tries, 'cause it is very different. You do really have nothing to lose except a little bit of time and stuff, but if you already don’t like me, there’s a little bit of a…it’s like a temperature setting, right?
If you’re…well, I’m not sure about this temperature I’m feeling about you, that’s…give it a few tries. If you already know I’m out of your temperature range, I have a website set up for you, sleepwithmepodcast.com/nothankyou, and that has other sleepy stuff on there you could check out and try and see if that works for you. So, give it a try, sleepwithmepodcast.com/nothankyou, 'cause it’s…this show and me is just not for everybody, and the other stuff I said is still true whether you like me or not, whether you strongly…have a strong distaste for me, because I hear about it on a pretty consistent basis. That’s why, for years, we’ve had that website. You could check that out. You don’t even have to let me know.
You could find something else, another sleep podcast or sleep audio or something else that might help you get the rest you need and deserve. What do I do here? I send my voice across the deep, dark night. I use lulling, soothing, creaky, dulcet tones, pointless meanders, and superfluous tangents, which means I go off topic, I get mixed up, I forget what I was talking about, then I get mixed up again, and it’s all to keep you company and take your mind off of stuff so you could get the sleep you need and you deserve. It’s kinda to…this is a podcast you just kind of listen to, like a out-of-focus picture or sand running through your hands or a TV on in the other room.
Like, maybe somebody else is listening to it, but it’s low enough that it’s calm and it’s soothing, or like a friend you call on your phone or on the old-fashioned telephone in the movies, and you say, just go ahead and talk to me. I’m gonna listen but I’m not gonna really pay attention, but I want you to really try to barely engage me. That’s what this show kinda does. It’s a podcast you just barely listen to, but you can listen to it. I’m here to keep you company whether you’re awake or asleep. This is a podcast, a sleep podcast, that I’ve been making kinda before the idea of bedtime stories for adults and sleep podcasts were a thing. But it was like, yeah, there’s always been this stuff for kids. What a rip-off, right? How come we don’t got this for adults? All the stuff for adults is serious and a bit…it doesn't work for me.
I want something a bit silly, a bit goofy, a friend in the deep, dark night. Even though this is a sleep podcast, it’s not meant to put you to sleep. There’s no pressure to fall asleep with this show. That’s the reason the episodes are just around a hour, over an hour, is because it’s here to keep you company and take your mind off of stuff whether you’re awake or asleep. There’s people who are listening who need a break during the day or who can't get the sleep they need; they just have a kind of sleeplessness where they’re gonna listen to the show for comfort and company. But you don’t…you can do either one, right? There’s no pressure to fall asleep. I’m here to be your bore-friend, your bore-bae, your bore-sib, your bore-cuz, your bore-bestie, your neigh-bore, your bore-bor, your Borbie, your bores, your bore-person in charge, BIC, baby.
That’s a new one. Your Borbie — I think I said that — your best bore-friend f’eva, your friend in the deep, dark night who keeps you company, and…you can listen to or you can wake up or you can put me on later or you could put me on a sleep timer or you could run the show all night. But I’m here for you just to talk and to be barely engaging, and I’m here to the very end for those people who can't sleep at all or who need the break during the day. So, that’s a couple important things about the show. Another thing that takes some getting used to is the structure of the show, and I’ll explain why the show’s structured the way it is and then how you can adjust it. But the first few times, I recommend listening to it this way.
So, the show starts off with a greeting; friends beyond the binary, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, and that’s so you feel greeted, so you feel seen, you feel welcomed, whether you’re coming back for the thousandth time, or…what do we have? Sixteen…I don't even know how many episodes we have. But most episodes, believe it or not, get listened to more than once anyway, so it could be someone’s ten thousandth time getting greeted by the podcast, right, if they listen all night long. I know the math. But there’s people that listen to eight to ten episodes a night, so…but yeah, if you’re a regular listener, it’s to welcome you back, and if you’re new, it’s like, huh, okay, I kinda get the tone of the show and at least I feel welcomed in. I’m still not sure.
Then there’s support, and it’s either direct support, sponsors that get directly supported by listeners, or just listeners who directly support the show. Those are the two ways we’re able to make this show on a regular basis and keep it free for everybody. If you prefer something without those ads, you could support the show directly on Sleep With Me+ or Apple Podcasts, or if you’re not in a position to support the show financially, you can do that through Sleep With Me+. But this way, that’s just how most people prefer to listen to the show, is like, the free, ad-supported…this linear version of the podcast. So, it benefits a lot of people who wouldn't benefit from it otherwise, and that’s important. It’s important to me.
So, that’s the support, then there’s a long, meandering intro — which we’re pretty much three-quarters of the way through, I think — that is not part of the support. It is a show within a show. It’s different every time where I unsuccessfully try to explain what the podcast is, and then I go off topic, and then…I stick to a structure that I meander through so that it’s different every time. So, every time you listen to the beginning of the show, it has a sense of familiarity and comfort, but it’s not the same so you can stay distracted and have some comfort in the deep, dark night and some newness. The intro also serves to ease you into bedtime. So, most listeners are getting ready for bed, winding down, or getting comfortable during the intro, not falling asleep.
There is a couple percentage of people that do fall asleep during the intro, and that’s great for them. Of course, a lot of us are in rooms with people or partners or homes or roommates that are sleeping so soundly, or pets, and we’re so happy for them. I never pass up a chance to pander to pets. During the intro is a great time to pet your pets, blow kisses to them if they’re not the pettable kind of pets, or just kiss your bicep for them, whatever it is. Wave at them, smile at them, and we’ll all pander…pandering to pets is important, even if it’s…what are those? Like a Chia Pet, or what are those…? I don't know how to say that word, but digital pets, they deserve it, too. We could pander to all pets.
So…oh, so, the intro goes on and on and on to ease you into bedtime, and if you prefer a show with just the stories, you could check out Bedtime Stories For Sleep With Me, or if you support the show directly, get these giant podcasts full of story-only episodes. So, you could do either one of those, and if you listen all night, that might be a better option, or you could build playlists within your playlist…your podcast app. But yeah, the intro is…it’s just…some people have a really strong reaction to it, but it’s meant to ease you into bedtime and for you to get comfortable, and that’s what works for me personally.
Even with being out of town and dealing with some stuff, I’ve been trying to stick to some kind of bedtime routine, and it has helped me get to sleep some of the time, even though my nights have not been great and restful. By the time this episode comes out, these…I record way in the future…I’ll past through this time and I’ll…my sleep will be different. But having a bedtime routine to ease me into bedtime is important. So, that’s what the intro does. Then there’s support again so the show can come out and we can work on it and make it, and then there will be our bedtime story — Dreaming of Newhart is what we’ve been calling it — and then there’s…and then that’s it.
That’s the structure of the show. That’s why I make the show. Believe it or not, as free and easy this sounds, a team of people work on this show. We all yearn and strive. We work really hard because we want to help you fall asleep. So, thanks again for coming by, thanks again for being here whether you’re new or a regular listener, whether you’re sleeping so soundly already — we’re happy for you — or whether you’re doing something else; you’re awake or you’re taking a break during the day, I’m glad you’re here and I yearn and I strive to bring you comfort and to help you fall asleep. So, thanks again for coming by, and here’s the ways we’re able to do this for you on a regular basis.
Alright, hey everybody, it’s Scoots. Welcome to Dreaming of Newhart. This is our second episode, and you’re gonna…you’ll be swept away on the suspension of dreams of Newhart here in a second, but I do want to set everything up. So, basically, what we’re doing is…I watched the Season 2…Season 1, Episode 2 of Newhart a few times, took some notes, and the first part of the episode is us gonna be kinda running through this episode as a dream, just like we were told. Okay, so, you could listen to Episode 1 for more background on the TV show Newhart, but this is Newhart, just one word, a eighties/nineties sitcom starring Bob Newhart. It’s available in the US here on Amazon Prime and probably available in most places.
It…something I didn’t really…I saw a few…I don't know, I think my parents watched it and I have a familiarity with it, so maybe I was watching it in a unaware way? I don't know. But the…this is somewhat of a spoiler, but it’s…the concept of this episode or the show is that we were told that the…when the series concluded, that the entire sitcom was a dream had by Bob Newhart. I think Bob Newhart. Maybe his name was something else. His name is Dick on this show. But, I don't know…and his last name’s not Newhart, I don't think. Huh. Yeah, I think it’s something else. Loudon, Dick Loudon. Yeah, it’s…so, this makes it even more interesting now that I think about it. But yeah, it’s…I mean, he was so beloved. But so, basically…but this whole series is a dream had by a character from his previous sitcom.
So, what we’re gonna do is go through the episode as we’re instructed, as if it’s a dream, interviewing and kinda walking through it, and then we’ll do some…we’ll use some AI to look at…and just almost as a randomizer for it to go on tangents and talk about the dream. It does take a little bit of setup. Maybe after we do a few episodes…but the setup is part of the snooze, you know? We won't be…going forward after this, we won't be watching the episodes sequentially, but we’ll be jumping around similar to TNG just 'cause there’s so many episodes and different characters and different seasons that I want to check out. So, yeah, without further ado, I’m gonna introduce, I guess, my internal Dick Loudon and someone interviewing them. Yeah.
Okay, it’s good to see you again. So, I know this is the second time meeting and I know you’ve been keeping these journals, so let’s kinda go through the dreams you want to talk about today. Okay, thanks. Yeah, it’s…I had the same dream as…I keep having the recurring dream of a car moving through the countryside pretty much on a regular basis, and it’s…I know we talked about it before. It goes through a bucolic town and it ends at that same white house or inn that in the dreams…these dreams I’ve just been having, where this woman who’s my wife lives. In this dream, she’s watering plants, and then that guy comes in. I don't know, I still…I’m not…I still…now that we’re talking about it, the idea that I’m having dreams that I’m not in…I realize that…you told me that in some theories that everyone is me.
Okay, it’s okay. You don’t have to be ready to process any of that at all. I understand. But I don't meant to interrupt, either. Yeah, so, it’s like, I don't know, just the idea that these people are me or represents…representatives of me, or just that I’m dreaming of people and I’m not there…but I’m not there as the observer, either. Like, I’m a…you know what I mean? So, it’s just hard for me. Okay, that’s good. That’s good that we’re talking about it. Why don’t you tell me about this dream you had? Well, it’s kinda basic. My wife was watering…this is just what I remember from the journals. She was watering plants and then that guy, Kirk, comes in. He’s dressed all in Dartmouth clothes.
He’s got a blanket, Dartmouth sweater, sweatshirt or something, he’s got a turtleneck on, and he’s got a picnic basket, a blanket, a pendant for Dartmouth. Is it Dartmouth or Dartmouth? I think Dartmouth is fine. That’s what you were saying. He’s got a hat on, so it feels autumnal, and my wife is spraying plants. Then Kirk tries…he starts talking about how he’s going to the Dartmouth/Harvard game. It’s the biggest thing in the thing. He’s going with Leslie, who works for us, and…oh, he has binoculars, even, to watch the game. It’s the biggest game of the season. Everybody goes. Picnics and stuff like that, floats…it sounds like a big deal. But he’s not being honest. You know he has that, 'cause Leslie comes and he says, Leslie, would you like to go to the game with me?
She says, actually, I gotta go study. Thank you, though. Then Kirk heads out. My wife is kind of laughing about it. Then another part of the dream was that guy, George, who works at the inn. I think this…I don't know if this is the same dream or another dream. It’s okay. We could just talk about it. He’s talking about how we need…or, we’re having a conversation. It’s in the middle of the conversation, like the dream just started, but we’re talking about buying a new furnace. We need a bigger one, and we can't figure out where to put the furnace. I keep giving him…I don't…I’m trying to give him…it doesn't make any sense 'cause I’m saying directions based on the compass, but I don't know how in the basement you would know what the compass is, anyway.
Then he’s saying, okay, you can't put this there. It’s too big. Then, you can't put it there. The southeast corner is where the stairs are. The southwest…and then he says, that’s where Mrs. Newton lives. I say, who? He says, Mrs. Newton. She’s a friend of the basement. I say, wait a second, there’s a friend of the basement, our basement, named Mrs. Newton. He goes, oh yeah, yeah, she’s a friend of your basement. She’s best friends with your basement. I say, whoa, wait a second, what do you mean? He goes, oh yeah, everybody knows that. I say, well, where is she? He goes, oh no, no, no, she’s there. Like, her presence is always there. The basement had her as a best friend and she had the basement as a best friend. I said, this doesn't make any sense. I said, Joanna…she comes…I said, do…can you help me here?
There’s a woman named Mrs. Newton who’s best friends with our basement. She goes, wait…she’s kind of spraying the same plants again. They say, yeah, Sarah Newton was her name — this was George, our helper — best friends with our basement. You could go down there. She left a plaque down there that says, this is my space for spending time in the basement. There’s a chair there. It’s her chair, and she wants…that’s her chair to hang out with the basement. I don't know why we never noticed it before. I guess it was just…we thought it was just stuff in the basement or a sign that said, ‘Reserved for the best friend of the basement’. Then George kinda goes through that this is…everybody knows it. How long has she been best friends with the basement? Three hundred years.
Everybody in town knows about this. You know, it is different. They said, but we can't…so, we can't use that space because it’s her space, right? In my dream, I’m like, yeah, no, no, this is not acceptable. This is our basement. We should be able to use the whole basement, even if someone is…'cause it’s a dream, right? It doesn't make any sense. How is she best friends with the basement and she’s…? George says, I think you’re better off getting used to it. Sometimes I walk across her space, but I’m just crossing over it. Joanna says, we gotta call somebody. I say, I don't know who I would call. She goes, I just don’t like the idea of…this is our inn. So, we’re confused. I say, okay, let me think about this. I know there’s one person…I call my mom, and…but then that dream ends. I say, mom? She answers, but the dream ends.
Then later I’m in my office working on stuff, and it’s another dream about the furnace. George comes in; he says, we got a couple furnaces picked out. One’s European and one’s not. Well, first he says, one brochure’s in color; one’s not. Then he says, yeah, one of the furnaces is European. One’s not…is made in the US here. The European one will take longer to fix, but the one made here costs more money. Or, $10 more, he says. I say, okay, well, let’s get that one, then, if it’s easier to fix, and George is impressed. So, he says, first class. Then I have another dream that George just tells her…Joanna about the furnace, but she thinks it’s about figuring out this best friend of the basement thing with Mrs. Newton. So, then George is a little down that he disappointed her.
Yeah, then I had another part…this is another dream recently where…it’s similar, the same stuff. My wife comes in. She’s been working on this thing with the best friend in the basement. I guess this is the same dream, but she says, did you do any work, Dick? I say, yeah, I found out she was…this inn was before the county was…existed, so we can't…this is a historical rocking chair and sign. Joanna says, okay, great. ‘Cause, yeah, I did go to the Historical Society of Geneology. Everybody knows about this. So, she’s really been making it a historical thing. I kinda feel a little bit like I let her down, because I only made one phone call. She was running over town. I also ate a orange, and the orange peels are on our desk.
Joanna also says Jacob Newton was one of the founding…founders of the town, and her house was originally on the same site. So, Joanna’s like, this is why. This was her basement. So, of course she’s gonna be best friends with the basement. By the way, this is the most cozy basement. I never see it in my dream, but I know it’s a cozy place where the warm furnace is. So, it’s not a archetypal basement. Then I tell Joanna a joke about my aunt and my uncle, and people…even in the dream, I hear people laughing. I’m very pleased with myself and she’s very…it’s very flirty. It’s just a moment of levity, though, but she thinks his joke’s very funny. But then she says, let’s bring…put the Newtons back together. Maybe your husband was her best friend. We should bring her sign and her chair to where her husband is.
I say, that’s a great idea, 'cause we…this is like, twenty-five percent of our basement we don’t have access to. So, then we go to where…based on their belief system…to consult the person that has a history and is where Mr. Newton is hanging out, but he thinks we’re there to say, hey, let’s take part of your belief system. So, I have to give him $20 in order to talk to him about this stuff, and for some reason, I don't…I just spent the $10 on the furnace, so giving up the $20 is hard for me. But then I gave it to him and he’s pleased, and then he’s happy to talk to us. So, we tell him about this idea of Mrs. Newton being best friends with the basement and that she still is best friends with the basement three hundred years later. He goes, oh yeah, from the Stratford Inn. Of course. I know all about it.
He goes, Sarah Newton, not just Mrs. Newton. Sarah Newton. Then my wife says, yeah, her husband is…rests here, and we’d like her to join him because…and say, well, isn't he your best friend, not the basement? She goes, do you have any precedent or history or any idea? Can you help us with this? Why would she be best…? Basically, it’s like, is she really more friends with the basement than her husband? He says, let’s look into this. They say, when’s the date? Well, late 1600s. I start looking it up; Newton. Okay, we got Jacob Newton, 1656. Pious…whatever. Then we see Sarah. Or, he says…and he says, 1660, 1692, caster of spells, particularly transformations into badgers. They say, wait a second, caster of spells? Yeah, boil, boil, toil and trouble style. We’re like, what?
And that’s the end of that part of the dream that I remember, kind of. Like, people are laughing…my wife’s like, wait a second, do you have any proof of this or is this just one of these things that dudes back then got obsessed about? So, she says, this is an outrage. He says, okay, okay, I hear what you’re saying. No wonder somebody would be friends with a basement if this is how people did decide. That’s why her house…they removed the house, even. Couldn't get rid of the basement, but they said, well, no…that’s why you can't cast any spells, so we’re gonna take your house away. Also, it could make…if…possibly cause your hair to change color, even. At first I tried to defend…I said, well, if she’s changing people into badgers…my wife says, no, no, no. She says, Reverend, can't you clear this up?
He says, well, it’s in the record here. This is the official record. Then I say, can't you do anything? I just gave you twenty bucks, which…this is a lot of money at the time of the dream. He says, well, I could go by the official route or I could just take it out. You’d have to go through a bunch of bureaucratic stuff and the hierarchy, unanimous decision, yadda, yadda, yadda. But you did…you seem nice enough. I could just take…you know, I could just get rid of this stuff. We’re like, really? He goes, yeah. You got a pen, pencil? I’ll clean the…clear this right up. He clears it right up. My wife’s like, that’s it. So, Mrs. Newton can be with her husband now? So, we’re still at this place where it’s like, okay, she must want to be…they must be friends. I thank this reverend and he says, yeah, don't worry.
He goes, we consider ourselves enlightened. A strange thing to say. He goes, by the way, don’t do…don’t feed any…he goes, have you seen that movie, Don’t Feed Anything After…Snacks…No Snacks in the Basement After Midnight. We’re like, well, that’s strange. Then we go back to the inn. Alright, now, by the way, our inn was 1774, and in the dream, I’m calling people to say, hey, by the way, your reservation’s not gonna be complete because it…because we’re having work done. I don't know why I’m honest, because we’re having the new furnace put in, but I tell the person, yeah, there’s a woman from the past who’s able to project her presence into the basement, and she’s best friends with our basement. I know that’s gonna sound strange, but we’re gonna be working on it.
She’s got a rocking chair and a sign that says she’s best friends with the basement. Also, there’s a line that would only glow if you were paying…and then she says, I’m sorry, I’d prefer to stay at a different inn. I say, how about the inn at White Falls? Thanks for thinking of us, and I hang up. Then George comes in. Again, it’s just stuff about the furnace. Installing it is eighty bucks. He gets confused; I say, I thought you were gonna do that. He said, I don't have eighty…why would I pay eighty bucks for you? He says, no, no, no, get it installed. I don't know anything about furnaces. I mean, I could do it, but you probably don’t want me to do it. Alls I know is furnaces are warm and if you want one installed, it’s gonna be eighty bucks. So, I said, alright, let’s spend the $80.
Then Joanna has good news, but again, he says, hey, by the way, I think everything’s fixed with the basement. She goes…but he meant the furnace again and she thought she meant things. He says, forget it. It’s that same kind of theme of letting her down. There’s somebody supposed to be coming to help, and Joanna’s like, I’m gonna be so relieved 'cause I’m really starting to have an affinity for Sarah, 'cause I’ve been learning more and more about her. She had seven children, she was a great mother, she took good care of them, taught them to read and write, made their clothes from scratch, grew all their food, and then people are saying she’s a spellcaster. No, she’s a hard worker. I agree with her; I say, who would have thought the time…? Then Kirk and Leslie are talking about the…going in the basement.
He’s complimenting us on getting her moved, but he’s kinda being…he’s just not very sensitive. My wife says, can't you have some dignity, man? Then the person who’s coming to move them comes, but it’s an actor from the TV show, Head of the Class. But he’s super young and kinda like a surfer or a stoner type. He has a sport coat on but he’s in jeans and a t-shirt and sneakers. I’m like, I thought you’d be older. You’re supposed to officially deal with this stuff? He’s just like, my dad made me…is making me work for him after school. I’m kinda not very nice to him 'cause I’d have thought he’d be more mature. He’s talking about taking a van to Europe. So, I keep making these quippy comments and it’s make…I’m making things uncomfortable.
Then he wants to get to work, and we say, okay…'cause he must have not understood that…he says, so you just want me to move the chair and the sign, right? We’re like, no, no, no. Well, it’s someone’s…you’re gonna have to talk to the person and make them comfortable, but you won't be able to see them because they’re best friends with the basement. We just want to get it over with. He says, I’m sorry…'cause, again, this is where the dream logic comes in. He does…but he’s not dreaming, it seems like, 'cause he doesn't understand…and he makes a reference to another sitcom, The Addams, and I say, no, no, no, this isn't like that. He says, forget it, I can't do this. I can't work with you. Then he takes off, and I say, I don't know what I’m gonna do now.
How are we gonna move a rocking chair and a sign by ourselves? I wish she would turn him into a badger. I say, okay, what are we gonna do now? Kirk says, hey, I know some…a company that’ll do anything for a buck. We’ll Do Anything for a Buck; that’s the name of their company. Kirk says, I have them move stuff, fix stuff, recommend restaurants. It sounds too good to be true for a dollar. So, I call them and at first they say they’re really busy, but then I tell them it’s a really strange situation of a person that’s best friends with a basement. They say, we’ll be right over. This sounds awesome. So, then they…we’ll be here in five minutes. So, that’s…that was kinda dreamy. They said, okay…and I get this sense in this dream of…can you have deja vu in a dream?
I get this sense of impending…this is the first time I’ve dreamed of this…these anything-for-a-buck guys, but I don't…I feel like I already…this is…in the dream, this is the first time I’m meeting them or aware of them. But so, they come…the next part of the dream is they come in and my wife’s working, Joanna. There’s three of them. Anything for a buck…and she’s surprised. She calls me, and…they’re a little bit different. One of them looks like he’s one of the Marx Brothers, and I say hi. The main guy says, I’m Larry. This is my brother, Darryl, and my other brother, Darryl. The other two Darryls are silent, even though this was before…the other person looks like Kyle MacLachlan.
The two…so, one brother looks like a Marx Brother and the other brother doesn't; looks like Kyle MacLachlan, and neither one of them speaks. They’re silent. They say, where’s this best friend…basement bestie? We say, downstairs. They say, we can't wait to meet her and see her setup, 'cause we’re best friends, the three of us. So, we can't wait to get down there. The brothers are kinda giggling. They’re way too excited, way too eager. My wife does…she has a sense of discomfort I can sense, or she’s very stiff physically. They’re like, we’re gonna get right to it. Don't worry. She says, oh man, I’m not feeling so great about this. She says, are we really doing…is this really a good idea? I say, this is what you wanted, right? She goes, I’m not comfortable with this. She’s best friends with the basement.
I say, yeah, but this is what you wanted. It’s probably a good idea. She goes, I don't know, the more I get to know her, I think her real relationship was with her children in this basement and not…it was a sense…this was a comforting place for her where she wanted to be. It was her best friend. It doesn't sound like her husband was her best friend. The basement’s her best friend. I say…she says, it sounds like her husband was a J-E-R-K. Like, where was he when they were saying she was changing people’s hair color and turning people to badgers? They took away her home and she was only left with the basement, and I think we should keep…give her her space permanently and not move her chair or her sign. I’m protective now of her. We’re gonna have to look out for her when no one else did.
I say, you sure about this, honey? She says, yeah. You get it? I say, okay, I guess I get it. I just don’t know how I’m gonna tell Larry, Darryl, and Darryl, 'cause they were so excited. So, I call them back upstairs, and I said, did you start moving anything? They say, no, no, we were playing Rock, Paper, Scissors or something to decide who got to move what and who got to talk about the best friendship. They’re extremely disappointed when I tell them; I don't know how to tell you this, but we’re not…we’re gonna keep everything. We’re gonna let her stay in the…control twenty-five percent of the basement, 'cause she’s best friends with it. They’re like, oh man, what a bummer. I can't believe…I don't think I ever gave them a buck, either.
I tell them I’m gonna pay them, and they say, okay, but I never do pay them. But I do say, hey, you could go clean up the yard a bit. There’s some stuff by the well that could get cleaned up. Or, Joanna says that. They run out and they say, great, great. So, that’s the end. It’s like, this sense of relief washes over us that we’re gonna allow Mrs. Newton to stay best friends with our basement. Then this dream kinda cuts out or something, and then the next thing I know, it’s…George is yelling for me. He says the guys are here to install the basement, and it’s the three brothers, Larry, Darryl, and Darryl from Anything for a Buck, even though they’re charging $80. I guess because they’re installing…they’re actually furnace installers, in this case.
Yeah, then the dream comes to an end other than kinda fragmentary…I remember Kirk in his Dartmouth gear and asking Leslie…and then George leaving the room or trying to show me…I remember talking to that reverend guy, the guy…the kid who worked for the other company, meeting Larry, Darryl, and Darryl, and then closing the door after they left. So, yeah, that’s everything. I don't know, can we talk…maybe take a break and then talk about what you think it means for me and I can try to process it? Yeah, we could do that, no problem.
Okay, this is Part 2 of Dreaming of Newhart, Episode 2. Alright, so, why don’t we go over some of your dreams and we’ll…my assistant and I will take a look at…I’m looking them over and I can see where you’re at with things, right? Okay, where should we start? Where do you think we should start? You know, this is a strange place to start, but what about with the orange? Okay, yeah. So, a dream about eating an orange or having an…? A dream about an orange, eating an orange. My assistant seems to be saying, okay, we’re gonna look at a Freudian version first. Again, this is coming from my assistants…assistant, who has been imbued with artificial intelligence. So, that could be repressed desires, unresolved conflicts, unconscious mind.
So, eating, in Freudian terms, can be taking something into oneself. So, it could be a desire, a need, or a consumption of ideas or experiences, and the orange could symbolize vitality, health, even pleasure. There’s the bright color, the sweet taste, the nutritious value. It could even talk about sweaty-back-type stuff because of the round shape and juicy texture. So, he has an interpretation here, but what do you think? Well, that’s interesting. So, I was eating an orange while we’re dealing with this woman, three-hundred-year-old woman, who’s best friends with our basement, and my wife has been really involved. Like I said in the dream with my wife…and this woman is my dream wife, you know, not my real wife.
But there was a flirty moment, and it was so…I can see that she’s been imbued with this vibrancy in the whole dream or the cycle of dreams I had, and it had made me more attracted to her, my dream wife. I know we’re not talking about my dream wife here, but it’s interesting. So, it is…it was…it is a very…it was a very stimulating experience that kinda brought a different type of life to each of us. So, yeah. Okay, well, let’s see. Let’s look at Jungian. You know, that could be new…the eating part is…could be new knowledge, experiences. A orange could be energy, creativity, life force, and it could be powers associated with the sun, consciousness, clarity, personal power. So, it could be…this kinda seems similar, too.
New, vibrant aspects of yourself, your conscious self, a new source of creative energy, vitality, personal growth and self-discovery. Do you feel like you’re having any personal growth, rejuvenation, and empowerment? Then the contemporary version, according to this…processing new information, emotions, or experiences, health, energy, positivity because of its nutritional benefits and bright color…so, what do you think? A desire…this is the…conclusions my assistant is offering. It could be sensual pleasure, emotional nourishment, assimilation of new experiences…we kinda covered that, your sweaty-back attractions.
The Jungian could be new, vibrant aspects of yourself into your conscious awareness, energy, creativity, personal growth, or a need for renewal, self-care, positivity, processing the new, refreshing experiences of your life. Any other things you’re picking up on? No, no, I think the flirty aspects are kinda what…and that, yeah, this experience with this inn that I keep dreaming about is…I don't know. It’s a part of it. Okay, what do you want to cover next? Well, I think the idea…the whole theme of the dream may be the three-hundred-year-old woman who lives in the basement and is best friends with the basement. Could we go over everything and then I could process it? Sure, sure, let’s do that.
So, my assistant says the Freudian part’s broken up into three things. So, the three-hundred-year-old woman could be wisdom, a maternal archetype, repressed aspects of your psyche deep in your past or deep memories. The basement could be your unconscious or where your repressed desires and other memories and other stuff is stored, and that’s kinda the foundation of your psyche. They could be aspects of yourself that are hidden or you’re ignoring. Now, the fact that the best friends with the basement…that could indicate a close relationship with your unconscious mind or repressed aspects of your psyche, harmony, acceptance for your hidden parts, maybe a deep connection with your unconscious mind, repressed memories or emotions…with wisdom and a long history with these elements.
Her friendship with the basement suggests a level of acceptance and integration of these aspects. So, I think this is a powerful part of the dream. I’m glad you brought it up. This dream could be highlighting the importance of acknowledging and harmonizing. So, this could be beginning of a long-term relationship with these dreams at night, possibly, maybe even five or six or seven year’s worth. Why do you find that funny? Well, I just…because I was thinking…I don't know. Let’s move on to the Jungian. A wise, old woman archetype, deep wisdom, feminine aspects of the self, a connection to the collective unconscious. The basement; an unconscious mind, foundation of the psyche, shadow aspects, hidden potentials.
Best friends with the basement; a harmonious relationship with your unconscious and an integration of the wise, old woman archetype into your psyche. So, maybe you’re connecting with this wise, old woman archetype within your unconscience, and that’s a profound wisdom, integration of feminine aspects of yourself, and the friendship could indicate a harmonious relationship with your unconscious mind. So, I think this is a positive thing, too. The modern analysis…the three-hundred-year-old woman could be accumulated wisdom of life experiences or aspects of yourself. The basement; again, the unconscious, hidden thoughts, feelings, and memories, and foundational aspects of your personality. The best friends with your basement; again, a positive relationship. Maybe you’re comfortable.
Maybe these dreams have some…I don't know, I haven't had any…I’ve never…by the way, I’ve never worked with anyone before. This is the first time I’ve ever done this. But, I don't know, maybe this could be…I don't know. But this is, again, acceptance. I think that’s it. This is…how do you feel about this? Yeah, I mean, I guess I’m looking forward to see how it unfolds. It’s weird that I guess my reaction is that it caused such disruption, right, this interpretation of the dream as this positive thing, but in the dream it was a source of disruption. So, I’m just wondering if there’s a disrupt…that I can look at the disruptions in my regular, day-to-day life in a different way. You know what I mean? I guess I kinda know what you mean.
So, you’re saying…that’s interesting. That’s really…because dreams are kinda different, right? We have to live in the real world. Is that…? Yeah, that’s what I’m saying, is in the dream, the woman that was best friends with the basement was really not a positive thing. Even at the end, it was kind of something I was willing to live with, and it was really an inconvenience that caused a bit of chaos. But I guess at the same time what the orange kinda showed me was that it also stimulated me and either my relationship with my wife or a relationship with the feminine aspect of myself or my sensual needs. Maybe it would be helpful to look at disruptions in my regular life that way. Okay, what do you…what more do you want to kinda cover today? We got some time still. What about the furnace?
Okay, so, the idea of…can you tell me more? Sure. Like, replacing an old furnace with a new one…but we didn’t really…couldn't find a place for it, and then, of course, the old woman who was best friends with the basement…okay, my assistant’s been listening and said, okay, starting with the Freudian…so, the old furnace; old system of warmth and energy and outdated emotional or psychological mechanisms you rely on for comfort and stability. The new furnace is a new way of maintaining warmth and energy and maybe a desire for new emotional or psychological resources. Now, the fact you cannot find a place to put it, frustration or conflict about getting these new ways…I mean, wow, this is…like my assistant in the dream, you’re one step ahead of them. Oh, thank you.
So, yeah, could this be an internal conflict between old and new, managing your emotional and psychological wellbeing? The old furnace represents these outdated coping mechanisms and the new furnace symbolizes a desire for change, and there’s a struggle between those two trying to find the right place. The Jungian; kinda the same way. Old ways of inner warmth could be past attitudes or beliefs. New ways; renewal, transformation, new source of energy. I guess, yeah, the…wow, I’m really glad you started with the orange and the…it’s the challenges and the process of in…yeah, the challenges and the process integrating new aspects of the self into the existing psyche. The dream suggests, yeah, you’re in the middle of a transformation. You got this…in the dream, this new inn you’re caring for.
Now it needs a new furnace. Also, the dream had…I mean, we didn’t talk about it, but the aspects of money and stuff. Contemporary; old habits or routines, old emotional states that did provide you with comfort and stability, and the new furnace kinda could be…symbolize the desire for change, improvement, or a more efficient way to manage your emotional and psychological needs. If you cannot find a place to put it, it represents real-life challenges and how to integrate these, and, yeah, outdated habits or routines with more new, effective ones, maybe. So, let’s see, in conclusion, I think it’s pretty obvious. I mean, not the total meaning for you, but the potential interpretations of it.
What do you think? I guess I don't have to think too much about it, I guess. It does seem like…it’s interesting what the furnace represents, and I think it goes with everything with the woman, but I guess I didn’t look at it of old ways of getting comfort versus new ways of getting comfort. So, I don't know, I guess I’ll have to just leave it to process again. Okay, what about…what else do you want to talk about? What about those three men? Two of them…they were all brothers. They all…two of them had the same name and two of them either didn’t want to speak or withheld speaking or just remained quiet.
Okay, yeah, my assistant is ready and my assistant says…starting with the Freudian, the three men could represent the aspects of yourself, significant male figures in your life…now, the fact that it’s a number three is important, my assistant is pointing out, that that number might symbolize balance, unity, or conflict between those parts. Now, the fact that they’re brothers, that could represent familiar tie…familial ties, similarities, or differences within yourself or your relationships. Now, the fact that two of them have the same name, that could be unresolved issues, repetition, or the presence of similar traits or conflicts within yourself. The fact that you’re unable or unwilling to speak suggests repression, communications issues, or unexpressed emotions. So, what do you think of all that?
Well, it’s…I don't know. Oh, can we keep going? Oh yeah, sorry. I only did one. You’re right. Okay, Jungian; the three men…the Trinity archetype symbolizing completeness, wholeness, and balance between the different aspects of yourself. Wow, my…I never would have thought that you pointed out that it was three men. I didn’t think the three was important. I’ll be honest with you, I’m impressed that you managed to make it say that there was three men, that you dreamed of three men. No, I didn’t…I mean, I knew it was important because there was three of them in the dream. Okay, thank you, thank you. Yeah, I’m glad we’re all working together on this.
Okay, the fact that they’re brothers, it could indicate different facets of your personality, significant internal archetypes, a fraternal relationship, it could suggest interconnectedness. The fact that two of them have the same name; duality, repetition, unresolved dual aspects within your psyche, and that the quietness could be shadow aspects, part of your psyche that’s not fully integrated or acknowledged, or communication issues. Actually, I think I forgot that in the other one. That also said very similar things; unexpressed emotions, repression. So, it could be that you’re grappling with integrating different aspects of yourself into a harmonious whole. The three men symbolize a need for balance and wholeness while the two with the same name could be dual aspects of your personality.
The fact that they don’t speak could point to shadow elements. So, I think looking for this is…I wonder if this will become a repetitive aspect to your dream or not. Again, why do you laugh when you say that? You know, I don't…I may…I just…even though this is my first time doing this in this role, I feel like this is gonna be a very fruitful part of your dreams. So, I’m happy for you. Oh, great. Again…okay, so, it could be shadow elements you have to acknowledge or integrate, and the dream might be encouraging you to bring these hidden aspects into the consciousness to achieve individuation or self-realization. Now the contemporary interpretation; there’s three men in different roles or parts of your life, possibly aspects of your personality or relationships.
The brothers could be connection, similarity, or familial dynamics within yourself or your interactions. The two with the same names could be recurring themes or issues in your life that need attention, and the fact that they’re unable or unwilling to speak reflects communication barriers within yourself or with others or unexpressed thoughts or feelings. So, personalities, life rules that interconnect, but they’re distinct. The repetition; maybe themes are recurring, unwillingness to speak or inability, it could highlight communication barriers, unexpressed emotions, unresolved conflicts, and maybe you need to confront and resolve these communication issues to achieve greater personal harmony and understanding.
Okay, I guess, again, I like that I’m learning this, but I’ll remain open to it, I guess, and see where it goes. Okay, anything else from the dream you want to talk about? Yeah, what about anything for a buck? Okay, the anything for a buck…my assistant says business…the fact that it was a business, it could represent your career ambitions, the way you engage with the world, it might also symbolize your values and how you gain satisfaction or security. The phrase ‘anything for a buck’…willingness to do whatever it takes. This could be a focus on financial gain maybe at the expense of others, or ethical things. In the Jungian sense, business can symbolize the persona, and that’s the aspect of yourself that you present to the world in professional or public contexts.
Anything for a buck; that might be the shadow aspect of your psyche, highlighting parts of yourself that are driven by materialism or a pragmatic approach to getting by, maybe a balance between your persona and your shadow aspects, and maybe your shadow side is willing to prioritize financial gain at the expense of ethical considerations. Business in the contemporary could be professional life goals and strategies, a pragmatic or possibly cynical view, and you might feel pressure to prioritize financial success above everything. So, yeah, I guess this is kind of…could be real-life pressures and attitudes towards finances or compromises. Is there a potential conflict between your desire for financial security and your ethical or personal values, or do you have to reassess your priorities and ensure…?
I mean, maybe if we talk more next week about your day-to-day life and you bring in some day-to-day conflicts, that might help get some context. Could you keep a journal of maybe one…come next week with what you dreamt about and what your week was like, and I think that’ll help us moving forward. Okay, yeah, I’m willing…I’ll be willing to do that. Okay, I’m excited about that, yeah. Let’s see, we do have a few more minutes together. Oh, let’s just…is there anything else about the ‘anything for a buck’ part that is coming up for you? No, no, no, but I like that idea of keeping a journal 'cause, yeah, I don't really…my weeks are…yeah, I don't really keep…I’ve been keeping more details of my dreams and not my regular waking life.
So, you really have no idea what my…? We’ve never talked about my waking life at all. No, I just know you’re a very humorous person. You kinda have a dry sense of humor. You have a bit of a edge, but it’s…you have a soft edge, I’m saying. You’re not…I don't know what the root words of ‘curmudgeon’ are. You’re not a curmudgeon, but you’re like a crudge or a mudgeon. You’re not a full curmudgeon. You know what I mean? You’re like a smudgeon, like a soft…you’re…I guess I understand what you’re saying. Oh, see? That’s the humor I was talking about. It’s usually wittier…you’re actually wittier than I make you seem, though. Okay, thank you. So, do you have one more dream…part of the dream you want to go over?
Yeah, what about the fact that the woman that was friends with the basement…she…with the…turning children to badgers and changing people’s hair? Okay, yeah, let’s see. My assistant has some things prepared here. So, a woman with magical powers in the Freudian sense; a feminine figure, powerful feminine figure representing mother…and I know you called your mother in that dream first…anima figure, part of your psyche that has significant influence. Turning children into badgers could be…or animals at all…repressed desires or instincts. That could be innocence or potential. Wow, my assistant points out that badgers are burrowing animals, so it could symbolize digging into the subconscious or defensive behaviour.
Now, changing hair color could represent identity or personal expression, and changing its color could symbolize a desire or fear of changing identity, social roles, or aspects of oneself. This dream could reflect underlying anxieties or desires related to that transformation and control, maybe a part of yourself or a influential figure in your life. Changing children into badgers might be a repressed desire to protect your innocence or someone’s innocence through transformation. It could be a defensive mechanism, instinctual reaction…and the hair color could be concerns about identity, personal expression, maybe a possible conflict between your current self image and desired changes.
So, yeah, I think…even though I’m not a professional as far as dealing with your daytime life, it would be good for me to learn more about that. I think that would be fruitful for just your talking to me. Now, Jungian…the woman with the magical powers; a wise woman, sorceress, wisdom, transformation, the ability to influence the psyche. Children into badgers could be new potential, innocence…badgers may represent persistence, protection, and connection to the Earth, and this transformation could indicate the integration of primal instincts and natural wisdom. Changing hair color represents transformation of persona or the outer self. Hair color could symbolize shifts in how you present yourself to the world or changes in your identity.
So, deep…possibly deep transformation, integration…magical woman; the archetype of the transformation of wisdom, maybe integrating instinctual and natural aspects of yourself represented by the badgers. The transformation of children into badgers could be innocence and primal instincts with protective behaviors. Hair color; transformation of your outer persona, shifts in identity, and self-presentation. Contemporary; the woman with magical powers is a powerful aspect of yourself or someone influential in your life who has the ability to affect change. Children into badgers; protective or transformative instinct, maybe a need to nurture or defend vulnerable aspects of yourself or your life. Again, the hair color; changes in self image, identity, and how you want to be perceived.
The dream kinda reflects a desire for or experience of transformation and control. So, what do you think about that? I think I’m pretty good. I feel like we’ve covered a lot, and I appreciate your time. I guess I’m kinda tired from going through all this, so I need time to process it, and maybe I’ll keep a journal or some journal of one of my days and kinda bring it into our next session, too, along with my dreams. But I’m look forward to getting some good sleep and dreaming more. Do you think I’ll keep dreaming of Vermont and inns? I do. I do think you will. I’m confident. I’m very, very confident you will, and I’m confident we’re supposed to be working together, so I’m happy about it. Well, great. Thank you so much, and goodnight. Goodnight to you. Sleep well.

Different every time
The intro is a great time to pander to pets
Or kiss your bicep to impress your pets
We can pander to plant and digital pets as well
My sleep will be different by the time this show comes out
STORY
Our second episode of “Dreaming of Newhart”
Going through Newhart as the dream of Bob Newhart it is
Available on Amazon Prime
I think my parents watched it
Then we’ll use an AI generator to interpret some dreams
And then we’ll start jumping around after this
My Internal Dick Loughton
The recurring dream of a car moving through the countryside
My wife is watering plants
And then that guy comes in
Dreaming of scenarios that I’m not in
Is everyone me?
Kirk is dressed all in Dartmouth clothes
He’s going to the Dartmouth / Harvard game with Leslie
The biggest game of the season
Leslie doesn’t want to go with Kirk
Repairman George says we need a new furnace
That’s where Mrs. Newton lives
A friend of the basement?
Her presence is always there
That’s her chair to hang out in the basement!
We just thought it was basement junk
Reserved for the Best Friend of the Basement
We should be able to use the whole basement!
She’s been here for 300 years
Joanna wants to call somebody
Then I call my mom
A couple furnaces picked out
One is European, the other is USA made
I opt for the more expensive model that’s easier to repair
Joanna is still trying to figure out this Mrs. Newton thing
This is a historical rocking chair and sign
Jacob Newton was a founder of the town
Her house was on this site
It’s not an archetypal basement
A joke about my aunt and uncle
I hear people laughing in my dream
Let’s bring her sign and chair to where her husband is
Reunite the Newtons!
I have to give this belief system guy $20 to talk about the Newtons
Her husband rests there
Maybe we can reunite them
Is she really closer to the basement than her husband
The late 1600s
Caster of Spells??
No wonder she was friends with the basement if people treated her that way
She was changing people into badgers
There’s multiple ways to deal with this
He’ll clear it right up
No snacks in the basement after midnight
Back in the inn
I’m letting people know that we have a friend in the basement and a new furnace being installed
Our guests would prefer to stay elsewhere
More people are coming to help
Joanna is developing an affinity for Sarah
She wasn’t a spellcaster, she was a hard worker!
Kirk and Leslie are talking about the basement
Kirk doesn’t respect Sarah Newton
The person who comes to move them is an actor from Head of the Class
This is where the dream logic comes in
He references the Addams sitcom
How are we gonna move a rocking chair and a sign by ourselves?
Kirk knows a company that will do anything for a buck
Can you have deja vu in a dream?
I feel like I know these anything for a buck guys
One of them looks like a Marx brother
Larry and his two brothers Darryl
One of them looks like Kyle Maclachlan
These brothers are way too eager to meet Sarah Newton
My wife doesn’t feel comfortable with this
This basement was Sarah’s best friend!
Sounds like her husband was a J-E-R-K
She wants to let Mrs. Newton keep her space
I have to tell these brothers that they shouldn’t move her
I don’t think I did give them a buck afterwards
But they could clean up the yard a bit
They’re so excited to do anything for a buck
George calls me
The 3 brothers are here to install the furnace
And then there’s a montage of moments from the dream
Let’s go over your dreams now
Let’s start with the orange
A dream about eating an orange
The Freudian version first
A consumption of new ideas or experiences
The orange is vitality and pleasure, maybe even sweaty back type stuff
I was eating an orange when this started
I could buy that interpretation
A Jungian approach
A new source of creative vitality and personal growth
The Contemporary approach
Health, Energy, Positivity
Sensual Pleasure, Emotional Nourishment, etc
Can we talk about the 300 year old woman who lives in the basement and is best friends with the basement?
300 year old woman – wisdom, repressed aspect of psyche, aspects of yourself you’re ignoring
The power of acceptance and integration
The Wise Old Woman Archetype
Unconscious Acceptance of Foundational Aspects of Your Personality
This is the first time I’ve ever interpreted dreams
An inconvenience that caused a bit of chaos
Can we talk about the furnace? Replacing an old furnace with a new
Freudian Interpretations of the Furnace
An outdated way of maintaining energy
Renewal, transformation, new energy
Challenges in the process of integrating new aspects of the self into the psyche
How do you integrate new life challenges?
Old Ways of Comfort vs New Ways of Getting Comfort
What about those 3 men who were weird brothers?
Aspects of Yourself
3 is important
Balance, Unity, or Conflict
2 of them with the same name could be unresolved conflict
Jungian Analysis
The Trinity Archetype
Significant Internal Archetypes
Unresolved dual aspects within your psyche
Unexpressed Emotions
Struggling to integrate into a harmonious whole
I’m sorry I keep laughing, I’m just excited for you
Life goals that interconnect
Unresolved Conflicts
What about ‘Anything for a Buck’?
It could represent your business ambitions
Prioritizing financial gain at the cost of ethical obligations
Can you bring in more of your day to day life next week?
Maybe tell me about your dreams and also what your week was like?
A dry sense of humor
A soft edge
You’re not a full curmudgeon
A soft smudgeon
You’re wittier than I make you seem
Analyses of the woman who turns people into badgers
Powerful Feminine
Badgers are burrowing animals – digging into the subconscious
Your current self-image and desired changes
A jungian analysis
New Potential Innocence
Integration of Primal Instincts and Natural Wisdom
Protective or Transformative Instinct
Changes in how you want to be perceived
I feel like we’ve covered a lot
I’m pretty tired after processing this
I’ll bring my regular journal with my dream journal next time
