STORY
Frannie, Frankie, and Victor’s Story
A letter from Elizabeth
Henry Clervold’s companionship isn’t enough
She’s upset Victor hasn’t written
She heard he’s not great
A nurse for hire might have been caring for you, only for money
Elizabeth could administer care with affection
WTF, why haven’t I heard from you?
Double WTF
Your little brother is going to join the army
He looks upon study as an odious fetter
A little girl, Justine, has joined their family
Explaining Justine’s family situation
There’s less distinction between the classes in Switzerland
A servant in Geneva means something different than in France or England
She learned the practice of service
Justine was once a favorite of Victor’s
The aunt decided to give Justine more of an education
Justine adored her protectress
She loved E’s aunt
Justine’s whole family soon left for the Big Farm
Everyone except her troubled mother left
A judgment from heaven to chastise her partiality
Justine was called home by her repentant mother
She’d rather be a servant than with her mother
I could’ve guessed that J’s mother would vacillate in her repentance
Is it weird to call her Auntie Justine?
E has a dear cousin, darling William
Darling William has already had two little wives
This is just kid stuff
Telling Victor about some Geneva gossip
Elizabeth wrote herself into better spirits
Write, Victor, just write something
I was exhausted writing back to Elizabeth
I could leave my chamber in a fortnight
Introducing Clervall to my professors
Beakers Be Gone
Henry saw that I really didn’t like scientific equipment
Benevolence of Beakerdom
I see Waldmann again
I’m not disowning my brilliance
He meant to please, but he was giving me a cross forehead
Clervall is really good at reading other people’s feelings
I wouldn’t know a bird’s beak from a beaker
No, really
Then we went to old M. Cramp’s office
Harsh, blunt, encomiums
He’s praising me but in a daming way
Easy with the Greatness
Is my modesty good?
- Cramp then starts talking about himself
Clervall always wanted to pursue language
He wanted to head East
Studying the Persian, Arabic languages
Is Clervall going to eclipse me?
Now, I enjoy being a fellow pupil with my friend
I learned these languages, just well enough to understand
Beautiful, heartening poetry
I would return to Geneva at the end of Autumn
Who am I related to?
I got delayed and figured I’d wait until the spring
Clervall didn’t have any acquaintances
I enjoyed out-studying Clervall
Spring was uncommonly late but it was beautiful
Still trying to fix the date of my departure
Henry proposed a walking tour of Ingallstadt to say goodbye
I enjoyed this hike
I became the same, happy creature of my past
Happy, Inanimate Nature
I was bored by Henry’s musings
Come up with some of your own ideas, bro
A pale of imitation of other writers
But we had a great time talking
When I spend time with him, I tend to feel good about myself
A letter from my father
Frowny, frowny faces will meet you
We’re hurt from your lack of correspondence
This is only to prepare you from woe
Sweet William headed out to the big farm
Our family went for a walk
We didn’t get back until after dusk
William and Ernest went ahead but then got lost
Ernest returns but not William
They were playing hide and seek and William disappeared
This was not a safe place to play hide and seek
Hiding in the big farm
Elizabeth is not happy
William had a miniature locket of his mother that we now can’t find
Whoever empowered William to hide may have that locket
Get back here, Victor
Come and help us, please
You could really comfort us
I don’t want you brooding, it was his choice
I probably shouldn’t send this letter to an overthinker, but here I am
I was very upset by this letter
Clervall is very upset about my misfortune
We can go instantly to Geneva
This is about me, Henry!
Why does He keep taking from me?
William is at total peace now
As I got close to Geneva, I slackened my progress
I passed familiar scenes of my youth
I was altered and so was my town
Calm returns to me
The black sides of Europe and the white peak of Mont Blanc
I was destined to become the most wretched of beings
I did not conceive of this level of misery
It was dark
I went to visit the site of William’s departure
Crossing over the lake
An intense storm is raging
A figure is on the horizon, lit by the lightning
It’s gigantic stature
This was my wretch!
What did he there?
Did he escort my brother over the rainbow bridge?
2 years had elapsed since the night he received life
I had turned a wretch loose on the world
My imagination was busy in scenes of despair
I didn’t date my creation, but my memory dates their creation
The tale has an air of delirium
I wouldn’t believe this story if someone else told it to me
6 years had elapsed since I’d left for Ingallstadt
I gazed on my mother’s painting
Ernest welcomes me home
Elizabeth is being hard on herself
Ernest says that Justine helped William go to the big farm
I believe it’s the wretch
How can it be Justine?
Today is the trial
They discovered the locket in Justine’s pocket
Justine was busted
My father greets me
Father is heartbroken by the revelation of Justine
I say that Justine is innocent
We hope she’ll be acquitted
The Living Monument of Presumption and Rash Ignorance
Elizabeth joins us
Time has altered her
Vivacity allied to a mournfulness
The double blow of Justine and William
They must prove Justine innocent!
We slept for a time, preparing for the day
