1391 – Walking from the Embarcadero to Chase Center | Walk With Me

An appreciation for mature vegetation will guide Scooter’s walk through the Embarcadero. Well, that and a love of public art.

This episode was recorded on location. It’s a sleepy, meandering walk but there is background noise (nature, cars, other voices). Feel free to skip this one if that’s not your cup of tea!

Episode 1391 – Embarcadero Chase Center On Location

    [START OF RECORDING]

SCOOTER: Friends beyond the binary, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, it’s time for the podcaster that’s here on the shores of San Francisco Bay walking the Embarcadero to put you to sleep, a walk with me version of Sleep With Me, out here walking through or across or along some of the San Francisco waterfront within view of the Chase Center right now, and I’m gonna walk all the way from the Ferry Building here tonight to put you to sleep. Welcome to Sleep With Me. It’s a podcast to keep you company and take your mind off of stuff so you could fall asleep, a little bit different idea for a sleep podcast. We’ve been doing this eleven years. This is a show to keep you company and take your mind off of stuff so you could fall asleep. So, if you're new, give the show a few tries and see how it goes.

These particular on-location episodes come out about once a month, and you can kinda hear water. That’s the bay water saying, hey, we're in for this. We're gonna do our part, too, to put people to sleep. So, the idea of these is I just go for a walk and kinda barely observe some stuff and go on tangents, just like if you were on the phone with a friend and you're like, hey, you know what? Tell me a story. Tell me about your walk, like a Sunday drive, but I’m gonna be in bed falling asleep. That’s how the show works. So, yeah, kinda see how it goes. I’m glad you're here. If you don’t like this style of show, every month we put out lots of new episodes, a lot of different styles of episodes, so you could find what works for you. But this is a podcast that doesn't really put you to sleep and you don’t really listen to it.

It’s…but it’s not on the far end of either one of those two at the same time. So, yeah, just see how it goes. What we got coming up is support so that paying for the podcast is optional or for the people that benefit the most from the podcast, listen the most, listen the longest, have been around. So, if you're new or you're not in a position to support the show, don't worry. Then there’s a long, meandering intro. It’s gonna be about ten minutes or so to put you to sleep, to ease you into bedtime, and then there will be some support and then a long walk, a real long walk today. So, this episode should be over an hour. So, yeah, if you're somebody…one of those people that does benefit from the show and you're like, man, how can I make sure this podcast is here next year? I get so much out of it. How can I help? This show helps me. Here’s a couple ways you could opt in and do that.

INTRO: [INTRO MUSIC] Hey, are you up all night tossing, turning, mind racing? Trouble getting to sleep? Trouble staying asleep? Well, welcome. This is Sleep With Me, the podcast that puts you to sleep. We do it with a bedtime story. Alls you need to do is get in bed, turn out the lights, and press Play. I’m gonna do the rest. What I’m going to attempt to do is create a safe place where you could set aside whatever’s keeping you awake, whether that’s thoughts, thoughts on your mind, feelings, like thing…thoughts about the past, the present, the future, feelings that are coming up for you related to those thoughts or feelings that are just there, physical sensations, changes in time, temperature, routine, you could be going through something, you could be getting over something, you could be in the middle of something.

Whatever it is, I’m here to keep you company and take your mind off of stuff so you could fall asleep versus putting you to sleep. The reason I make the show is kinda twofold, right? One of the reasons I make the show is because I’ve been there; tossing, turning, mind racing, trouble getting to sleep, trouble staying asleep, waking up too early. Whatever it is, I’ve had all those things. I know how it feels for me. Even when I’m sharing a room with somebody or have a roommate or whatever it is, or in a house full of people, it can feel pretty isolating and lonely.

So, that’s one of the reasons I make the show, is 'cause I know how it feels for me, and I know how it feels for me when I can't sleep night after night after night, how that impacts the rest of my life, and I know how it feels when I tell people I can't sleep; that they can't quite relate to it and they don’t mean to be dismissive, but they kinda unintentionally are sometimes. So, that’s one of the reasons I make the show, is because I know what it’s like, and if it’s anything like that for you, I want to help. If…even if you were kinda like, well, I don't know if you know what it’s like for me, the thing is there’s enough people listening that there’s someone listening somewhere in the world right now that really does understand what it feels like for you, and they really hope the podcast can help.

They've been there and they're like, man, I hope the show can help you like it helped me. They’ve been through something very similar, so they understand exactly what it’s like for you, and they're rooting for you. Like, man, I hope this podcast can help you like it helped me. The other reason I make the show is 'cause you deserve a good night's sleep. You deserve a bedtime where you could get the rest you need so your life is more manageable, that you could get the rest you need so you have a better day tomorrow, that you could get the rest you need on a regular basis or get through whatever this thing is you're in the middle of. So, that’s the reason I make the show. You deserve a good night's sleep. The way it works is I send my voice across the deep, dark night.

I use lulling, soothing, creaky, dulcet tones, pointless meanders, and superfluous tangents. So, that means I go off topic, I get mixed up, I forget what I was talking about, then I double back, I get distracted, all to take your mind off of stuff and keep you company so you could fall asleep. This podcast is a little bit different, right? It’s a podcast you don’t exactly listen to, kinda like…that’s one of the things that works about these on-location episodes, is that I’m just out walking; I get distracted, and there’s background noise that’s unintentionally soothing, because the podcast is not meant to be focused on. It’s like background noise or a mild distraction; you're just paying attention or you could pay attention to when you need to, but you don’t have to listen to it. That does take some getting used to, right?

‘Cause we're supposed to listen to stuff. People tell us that kind of stuff all the time. So, just kinda…it takes some getting used to to kinda just barely listen. It also isn't meant to put you to sleep. I’m here to keep you company while you fall asleep versus put you to sleep. That also takes some getting used to. There’s no pressure to fall asleep with this show. The reason the episodes are over an hour…so you don’t have to think about falling asleep. I’m here to be your bore-friend, your bore-bae, your bore-sib, your bore-cuz, your bore-bestie, your neigh-bore, your bore-bore, your bore-bie, your best bore-friend foreva, and keep you company while you fall asleep. Like, so at some point you just wake up and you're like, man, I had no idea…I just…he was talking about something and then I woke up.

Then if you can't sleep — there’s people listening who can't sleep — I’m here to the very end either way. So, that’s one important thing about the show. The other thing is that…what else do you need to know? You don’t need to listen to me, no pressure to fall asleep, most people don’t like the show when they first get here 'cause it is so different and it does take some getting used to. So, just see how it goes. Give it two or three tries. If you find out the show doesn't work for you or you already know, I have a website set up, sleepwithmepodcast.com/nothankyou, that you could check out, 'cause you still deserve a good night's sleep. What else? The structure of the show is very intentional.

It starts off with a greeting; friends beyond the binary, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, so you feel seen and welcomed in, then there’s support so that paying for the show is optional. Really, paying for the show is for people that really get a lot out of the podcast versus if you're just checking it out or you only listen to it a few times or whatever. That way you get to listen free 'cause of the people that support the show and because of the sponsors. Then there’s a long, meandering intro meant to ease you into bedtime. Tonight it’s like…the on-location episodes is a little shorter, but it’s to give you time to wind down, to get ready for bed, to get comfortable in bed, and to leave the day behind, like a fade-out of the day. So, that’s the intro, then there’s support, and then tonight it’ll be our bedtime story.

I’ll be walking around San Francisco, and this is a series of stuff we're doing 'cause it’s just been so popular. We’ll do more and more based on the feedback of people. But, yeah, we’ve been doing one of these a month, or trying to. These do take a little bit more time and effort, so if you love these, support the show and let me know that’s why you supported the show. Also, we have tons of on-location episodes in our bonus feeds. So, yeah, I think that’s everything. I’m really glad you're here. I really appreciate you checking this podcast out. I really work hard on the show. So do a team of other people, 'cause we yearn and strive to help you fall asleep and to find new ways of doing that. So, thanks again for coming by, and here’s a couple ways we're able to do this for you on a regular basis twice a week or three times a week or whatever we're able to do. Thanks.

Alright everybody, this is Scoots here. I’m at Salesforce Park, starting the episode. You can hear the escalator going, and now I’m walking into the park here. It’s the elevator. I’m gonna do a little walking around Salesforce Park, which I haven't been to since the opening. So, it’s been quite some time. This is on top of a relatively new transit building here in San Francisco that’s kind of envisioned as a grand transit building with trains in the future. Right now it’s a really good…I just took the bus literally from…literally…I took the bus; they have these transbay buses that came right from my neighborhood all the way to San Francisco, which is incredibly convenient versus taking the bus or to the BART or getting to the BART station and then trying to get into the city. So, yeah, I’m gonna be walking the park here.

It’s a beautiful spring day, and my plan…wow, there’s some really good vegetation and beautiful plants here at this park, and some flowers are blooming. It’s mid-April when I’m recording this. Who knows when you'll be listening to it. Purple flowers, orange flowers…but my plan is to walk at least as far as the baseball stadium along the waterfront of San Francisco, or as a back-up plan, to do something else. It is…the weather is supposed to be high pressure today, which means there should be minimal wind. This park’s kinda blocked in by skyscrapers, so I don't know the wind situation right at this moment, but I hope to find out. Or, yeah, I hope to find out that there’s no wind. I did on the bus see one flag that was…there’s thirty-nine different species of lavender. I did see one flag that was not billowing.

So, it’s a rare opportunity that I kinda jumped at. It’s also a big day as far as this…it’s the last day of the NBA season, which may not be super important to a ton of people, but it is a big game for San Francisco’s team. They're playing one of the LA teams, and it…so, I may walk that far. I’m just not sure exactly. Again, based on the wind and just based on my own walking preferences. But I have wanted to get this park a stroll through. Quark oak…it’s a evergreen tree with thick, rugged bark, native to Southwest Europe and Northwest Africa. Primary source of cork for wine bottles. Wow, it is quite…wow, I never knew cork came from a tree, but looking at the tree, you can kinda see how that’s possible. Wow. Cork…cork the tree. That’s kind of amazing. I had no idea that’s cork bark.

Oh, and…wow, it’s sustainable in the sense it comes from trees as they're living. Wow, that’s so interesting. Then we have some yellow flowers coming up here. We got a bush with green and cream leaves, and then some yellow flowers on a fuzzy plant. You can hear some birds. There’s palm trees. Oh, this is the California Oak Meadow. So, they really do have quality signs here. Oh, and there’s even a cafe. Oh yeah, there’s a cafe right there. So, that’s cool. This is a prehistoric garden I’m passing now. Ginkgo araucaria and stuff…interesting. Yeah. Wow, some cool…I had no idea…the only time I’ve been here…I was here with a bunch of family members, so I wasn’t really…it wasn’t for the podcast. It wasn’t…it was so long ago. Like I said, this has been something I’ve been wanting to do for a while but I haven't done.

So, yeah, just a cool walk through this park and then a walk through hopefully some of the San Francisco waterfront. There’s also a new statue on Embarcadero that’s getting a lot of attention, but it seems like a statue that was…sorry, I forgot what I was just talking about. This is…always trying to adjust for those people walking around. But yeah, we’ll…oh, the Ferry Building has a new statue or…outside of the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero. But it looked like — from the pictures I saw — that it’s a statue that was relocated that I’ve seen before…neither Oakland or a different part. But yeah, I’m gonna do some walking and…I mean, right now just enjoying walking in this park that is 4.5 football fields in length. It is way more lush than I ever expected, and really well kept up.

So, I don't know if this is a public-private partnership. I kinda picked a good day and a good time of day to come, 'cause it’s not super busy. It is…it does have people, and they can hear the wonderful background traffic sounds. Even right here we can hear some air, water sounds? I don't know. It does sound like water. We're getting a mourning dove there. Huh, a bus fountain. This fountain works based on the bus. I don't see any buses coming in right now, though. Oh, this is also…this little cable car comes up here. I forgot about that, or a little tramway that comes up from street level. A gondola; that’s what they're called. Don't know how often that runs, but…yeah.

There’s some bamboo, and after the bamboo, kinda moving into a sunnier side of the park here, you can hear different footsteps, and it is cool 'cause San Francisco…you really…this is kinda like almost the feel of the Highline in New York City, even though this does…it’s just a park. It doesn't necessarily go anywhere. I don't mean just a park; a park to…I’m not trying to insult you. I’m just trying to say that it just gives you a unique vision of San Francisco, and to be honest, I don't normally consider San Francisco a skyscraper city. Comparatively to…I mean, just because I lived in New York, I guess. But yeah, it’s…man, there’s a lot more to appreciate about this park. I love it. Now, this is a strong recommend just 'cause of its central location to the Embarcadero.

It’s a easy stop, and it does seem kinda like…it is a Sunday, so it is a fairly good place to get away on a Sunday. Most of the people here are just people out enjoying a walk like me. So…and it’s just amazing. I guess if Salesforce…I mean, the maturity level of the plant life, right? This stuff was put in…it’s clear no…they spared no expense making this park. So, right now I’m in a kinda grove of some willow-like tree, and then there’s palms surrounding a skylight to the bus station. I think there’s a stage over here, and mounds, and then the sun’s reflecting off of these towers. It’s…man, I’m so glad we got to do this today. I mean, this may even take up much longer than I thought, 'cause we still have more park to explore, and there’s still this bus fountain. I’m guessing there’s a fountain jet for each bus.

I didn’t read it because it was kinda busier over there. So, yeah. Yeah, I mean, this…the reason…I think I also have this perspective 'cause I just was in Florida and I really was noting the…we were in Disney World, the parts of Disney World that have mature vegetation versus the parts of Disney World where the vegetation is still to be grown in, and obviously this one, they just put in mature vegetation. This has been here a few years, so…but not enough for these trees to grow from the…yeah. These were put in with…already in…I mean, it’s just breathtaking. You could…this is like a botanical garden, actually, versus a park. I don't know why I’m gushing. The only reason I’m gushing about it is 'cause I’m so surprised at…I guess when I came here I just saw it as a really long rooftop park with…a really nice, long rooftop park.

But now I’m seeing it’s a…wow, yeah, are these manz…giant manzanitas? Okay, the bus fountain…it’s a thousand-foot-long series of…activated by sensors on the bus deck. There is water in there, so if it is operating, it’s operating infrequently. Oh, there’s a robin in there. So, that was manzanita that we saw, and…yeah, it looked pretty cool. Here’s some coastal sage scrub. Wow, they really did this up. This is stuff like when you go hiking that you get to see. Coastal scrub is the most common scrubland found in coastal California. All the sand dune is scrub, scrub species, soft leaves, coastal scrub. Yeah. Now we're at the end of this park, I think, and making this loop at the end, but there’s still a lot more lavender and…wow, the birds.

Now we’ve got some desert plants; agave…wow, and there’s the ampitheatre, which I was always like, man, I’d love to do a episode here. It would have been the perfect spot. I don't know how often that performance…but, yeah, it wouldn't work for Sleep With Me just because we just haven't figured that…I don't think live shows…live shows work…the performance of the live shows works, but the…oh, this is aloe. So, yeah, this one end…it’s kind of a sleepy Sunday in San Francisco. The Giants are out of town. That makes it another good reason for me to walk to the Giants park. Wow, it’s so well…the descriptive stuff is so good.

Here’s another blooming flower plant. Yeah, wow. Salesforce Park…now in Scoots’ strong recommend. You can hear the buses coming in below us. There’s this really cool bridge for the buses to cross, and some really quality bird sounds. Oh, they have a place…description of how the fog affects plants here. They have a restaurant available for lease. I guess it would really…would have to be kind of a flagship restaurant, because otherwise…it would have to be a destination restaurant, not a casual restaurant. Alright, I’m gonna take a quick break here 'cause I’ve completed our loop, and…yeah, I’ll be back.

So, I guess my plan would be to walk over to the gondola and see if we can take that down just for a unique experience. I probably won't be able to record that, but we’ll see. Otherwise, I’ll take the…what do you call it? The…what are those things called? Those things are called escalators…down, and exit that way. It’s a lot of grass, too. There’s no one chilling on the grass, but it is a really nice spring day. So, it could…you could bust out a blanket here. Oh, I did use the restrooms. So, the bus station has restrooms as well, but the park has small restrooms on the back of the restaurant. I’m not sure if there’s another set, but they were well maintained. Another good thing to have in the back of your pocket, though it would be a while from the street level.

If you were looking for a public restroom, you'd probably be better off going to the Ferry Building at this point, which…well, it’s a few blocks away, or going into a hotel lobby. But, yeah, just always trying to think of restroom options. Scoots is always looking out for you. Okay, so I’m gonna walk…well, you know what? I’m gonna save the gondola for me and my daughter — I’ll be honest with you — 'cause it’s something fun, and I’m gonna take the escalators here. So, I’m gonna have to do a fade-out just in case, and then do it. Oh, the elevator just came for somebody else. Alright, so, yeah, I may be right back. I might not be.

Another cool thing is that this is a pretty grand building. I was just in Moynihan Train Hall about a month ago just walking around. Well, a couple different times I was in there. So, if this did add in the trains, whether the Caltrain or a high-speed train, I guess it would be one or two levels down. It’d be pretty amazing. So…but right now it’s just for these transbay buses and stuff. So, it’s not quite as active as you'd think. But yeah, now we're gonna exit out into the street, and I don't even know if I did a fade-in. I think I did. We’ll start walking and kinda see how it goes, where you come out on…head towards the Embarcadero, which will probably be loud. Also, at some point I want to get something to eat. Oh, there goes the…it almost just looks like an elevator car, the gondola, but it is cool. Yeah, it’s something unique.

I’d say, man, I want to ride that with my daughter versus…I can't…wouldn't be able to record in it anyway 'cause there’s people in there. Alright, so now we're out on Market Street, and we're gonna get some city sounds. We gotta remember that this is being recorded in binaural audio, which kind of adds the element of immersion. I may want…I may not walk all the way to the Embarcadero. I might take one of these streets to the water and just start walking. Then I kind of avoid some of the bustle. Then I’m able to stay with you most of the time. Also, it’s gonna be interesting because I don't know how this wind is gonna be. So…well, I guess the good news is we’ve got about fifteen minutes recorded at the park. So, we're on an adventure together. I am in the non-warm part of the sun.

At some point I’m gonna get lunch. My thought was I would get lunch at…all the way over at the Chase Center, but I don't necessarily think I would walk…I don't necessarily think we're gonna walk that far, but we’ll see, 'cause I have to walk basically…I mean, I guess I could take the train back. But I’m just trying to think of…yeah. ‘Cause I’d prefer to take the bus home versus BART home just because it goes all the way home and I don't have to make any transfers. It’s always the transfers…or maybe I’ll catch a ride from the BART station. But yeah, let’s not…Scoots, let’s not pack for a trip you haven't taken. What’s the one? Packing for a future trip, packing today…I don't know what the saying is, but, yeah, let’s not do that.

Yeah, this part of San Francisco tends to be not super busy on the weekends, just the financial district. But it doesn't mean it’s not worth exploring. There used to be a food hall in this building. We're at Spear and…I forgot which street we're on. Mission and Spear. I think this building’s 1 Rincone. I think it used to have a really fancy restaurant, but also a small food hall maybe for lunch on the weekdays. Then the Ferry Building has full places to eat, and the Ferry Building will be bustling right now, almost guaranteed. But yeah, now we're out in the sun. I’m screened up. Yeah, Rincone Center. I guess not…it’s got some…I don't know the history of the building. It’s a post office, and I think it’s converted into offices and other things. Maybe there’s still a post office there, too.

Definitely a older building in some sort of classical style. Definitely…let’s see what this mural is. Is this a description of the mural? Okay, I just crossed one of the streets, and there’s a nice mural here, though it did have a protective layer on it that’s kind of peeling off. But yeah, across the street is a restaurant, Boulevard, that I’ve never eaten at, but it seems to be a fancy restaurant. Crossing the Embarcadero now. The Ferry Building is to our left. It does seem to be bustling. The whole Embarcadero probably will be bustling. We do have some flag movement, so we're gonna see how it goes. But, yeah, we are at 101 right now, and we're gonna head out onto the waterfront, head away from the Ferry Building, which may have less people, or maybe…but there’s no wind, so I think I can space us out.

Oh, there’s also…you could catch…there’s a couple ferries that come all the way down here. I had no idea these gates were down here. So, if my ferry was at one of these gates, I’d probably miss it. Or are these even new gates? There’s a pier here. What do we got here? Is this a fishing pier? Yeah, I guess so. Announcements…and of course, the Bay Bridge crossing above us and in front of me, and the bay. I’m getting some good bay smells coming off the bay. I mean…and I mean that in a good way, because it smells like…yeah, it’s a heady smell. Not too intense just 'cause the bay is constantly getting processed here. Oh, and there was a ferry horn. Not sure if you heard that or we took it out, but, yeah, you know you're out and about.

It will be…you'll probably hear a couple voices every once in a while just 'cause, I don't know, I think this is a nice walk. But I don't want to cut every single conversation if we're passing in two different directions unless it’s really loud or distant horns like that, and chattering of the birds. But yeah, if you ever want to listen to this one during the day, it’ll be in binaural audio, so the birds will be in your right ear and kinda the traffic in your right, and then kinda the bay and the Bay Bridge…you could kinda hear the hum of that, which is not bad. We have pilings off to my left of older piers that are not here anymore, or a older waterfront, and then across…straight across from me at the end…halfway point of the Bay Bridge is the…Yerba Buena Island and Treasure Island.

You can even see the towers of the other side of the Bay Bridge as a ferry heads out maybe to Alameda, maybe to Larkspur, maybe to…do they go to Petaluma? I don't know if that’s…there’s a few different places you can take ferries or…and then it’s expanding more and more. So, that’s cool. Then there’s this sculpture we're gonna check out next, which I believe is called I Left My Heart in San Francisco, but it’s this giant, somewhat Disney-esque…which I guess in San Francisco’s style chart…I mean, this has been here a long time. Any big public art I like, whether…so, the giant…anything especially big. Or, I guess subtle’s cool, too. I don't know, I’m all for public sculptures because it just adds a lot. So, this one is Cupid’s Bow, B-O-W.

But here’s the thing; did Cupid ever have a beau, a B-E-A-U, or is Cupid a fan of Beau Bridges? I don't know. Does Cupid have a beau? I don't know, and on our walk we will continue to go. So, this is right at the edge of the Bay Bridge, almost. You've got buildings kinda rising up on the waterfront, including the Hills Bros. coffee building, which has kind of an iconic sign on it. Yeah, this sculpture is cool. It’s surrounded by kinda…looks like drought-tolerant plants, and it’s lit up at night. It’s cool looking at it. This is a really nice walk that we're on. So, it is a strong suggest. There is…if you're a baseball fan or if you're…you want to even go further to the basketball stadium…I’m just not sure exactly how far it is, so I do have to keep that in mind. But, yeah. So, yeah, that’s the sculpture. Pretty soon we're gonna pass under the Bay Bridge, and that’ll be nice.

That ferry’s already pretty far. People are running, people are out with their dogs, and people are out with their coffees, walking, people are people-watching, holding hands, and…yeah, because of the weather, it’s really calm here. Not that it’s always windy, but I would say at least for recording a sleep podcast, it’s probably normally too windy. If your kids like boats and ships and…there’s even the SSFD’s pier here with their boats to help…people helping boats, which is not something you see everyday. Just another cool look. It looks like they had a modern building.

The tide may be coming in. Now it’s just water hitting a former staircase down to the water. I don't know if this used to be accessible, but…yeah, we're catching some waves, man. So, it adds…we got the traffic and the waves. It’s quite the combination. In fact, I’m gonna walk out here 'cause I think this is…we got ship horns in the distance. This is the ultimate in kinda white noise, even. So, what I’m gonna do is get a few minutes of this and then maybe put it out for everybody that supports the show directly and just chill here for a couple minutes.

Alright everybody, it’s Scoots here. A band’s just about to start up, so I’m gonna relocate or keep going on our walk. But I did get some good audio. There’s just some amazing boat traffic here. So, I’m gonna fade out while they're doing their sound check, and then I’ll be right back. Also, I forgot to mention, sitting with me the entire time — and I’m trying to do a video version of this stuff — was a seagull literally four feet from me, just sitting, perched, chilling. So, pretty cool. Pretty amazing stuff. The ferry’s coming in. Yeah, I’m gonna keep going here, keep going along the Embarcadero and keep talking 'cause the band, they just did a little short…I think it was just wetting the reeds. I don't know, is that what you call it when you play a woodwind instrument? I don't know. Yeah, passing people playing music…alright, I’ll be right back.

It’s cool to know that, yeah, there’s a restaurant down here, two restaurants next to each other, and…with outdoor seating in there. On a Sunday maybe they do a brunch. But they have live music. I think I’ve been in one of these restaurants. Actually, I’m laughing because the reason I was in there was I was meeting someone from out of town who had a work dinner at Boulevard, the restaurant I’ve never eaten at, and they were like, oh, can I meet you after dinner? I say, yeah, I guess we could walk around and they could have a drink and I could just hang out with them. So, yeah, now I’m passing the Hills Bros. coffee building.

We're gonna go under the Bay Bridge, so we're gonna get some really cool white noise, brown noise, or green noise, or purple noise. Yeah, so, you can kinda hear the bridge here, which, again, I will try to also get some…another dose of it, like a few minutes of it if I can, though it’s a little busier here along the walk with people walking and talking. Then I may get lunch. There’s two huts…maybe there’s only one now or…where you could get a burger and a soda. It used to be for reasonably cheap. I’d have to look at what time it is. Oh, this one…I guess it’s 11:45.

Yeah, so…but I don't know if I do need to get…I guess maybe I should just get this Bay Bridge as background noise and then…yeah, and then I’ll be on the other side…keep walking. So, yeah, I’ve left the bridge behind; not too far behind. But, yeah, there’s these two kinda bars here on the waterfront. Red’s Java House is the more famous one. The other one’s High Dive, and Red’s has always had these specials. Either one would be a good place to go to have some drinks if you were going to the Giants game. Yeah, they still have them. So, I guess I will eat here and shut it down for a little while, and be back.

Hey everybody, it’s Scoots. I just left Red’s, and I’m so glad I stopped there. It had been a while. I don't think I stopped there since I stopped drinking. Maybe I have when somebody was in town. But again, I’m gonna put it on…this is a walk if you're in the city maybe you should think about doing. You do have two options I would recommend; that Red’s, if you like to sit outside and drink or just have a couple beers. They have burgers and hot dogs and stuff like that. It will be a San Francisco style, most of the stuff. The burger’s served on a part of a sourdough baguette without lettuce and tomato, but it is really good. I just ate it, and the hot dog was also very good. You can get it with onions and relish and mustard or just onions or just mustard.

Another option which you may need a reservation for is the Delancey Street Cafe, or maybe it’s the Delancey Street Restaurant, which is run by the Delancey Streets Foundation. It’s kind of a training restaurant, an opportunity restaurant. So, I would also recommend that. I’ve had some good meals there. It’s been a little while since I’ve eaten there, as well. So, that’s next on my list as we leave the Bay Bridge behind. Now I have a nice, full belly and delicious taste in my mouth, and I still have a little bit of Coke. But again, you get a view of the bay as you're walking here, all the ships, particularly on a Sunday, I think, waiting docked or anchored and waiting to dock or depart or unload or load. Man, it’s picturesque. The street car’s going by.

Again, if there was a day Giants game, this area would probably be a lot more hopping, which, again, it’s been a while since I’ve done that. So, it has to be…oh, I went to a Giants game, a night Giants game, to see the Mets play, but that was at night, so I drove with my daughter and parked versus making an adventure out of it. So, yeah, we're just here walking on the Embarcadero. The Giants park’s in the distance. I can remember when I first moved here, and it was only something that was just approved, maybe, or they had started building it. Maybe when we get closer we’ll know that. I do think that actually…while I was eating, I was kinda looking up the distance to the Chase Center. It is only 1.5 miles. So, I do think we will go for it depending on…my daughter’s also out. I have to meet up with her at some point.

So, we’ll kinda see. These pillars, what are they? They're kinda…some kinda sculpture. I don't see a sign for them. You know…oh, there’s one coming up. Another thing I love and I’ve always loved about San Francisco is these walks and just the random art you discover. It’s one of the things that made me want to move here. Yeah, so these are tidal cycle…count the stripes to read the tide of the height…height of the tide. Don’t quite understand how that works. But yeah, man, people are out. Oh, somebody’s roller-skating and roller-blading. I’ll tell you what; this is one of these walks…even though I haven't definitively planned to move away, these are one of these things that when you come here and do this walk on a day like today, you're like, man, I gotta move here.

That’s a legitimate reaction, 'cause there’s…the sun is warm but there’s cool air coming off the bay, there’s the smells, there’s the ships, there’s the people. Yeah, I gotta adjust my sweat…or my…not sweatshirt. What is this thing called? Backpack. Alright, so, backpack is adjusted now. It’s making a clicking sound, though, so I do have to figure out why it’s doing that. So, we’ll just sit down here on the edge of the bay. Alright, I think I got it. I just tightened it up. There’s something inside the bag that’s clicking. Oh, bumping together, which I guess is probably a good time for me to walk slower and more deliberately. There’s people, their dogs, enjoying the day, seagulls waiting for people.

I’m sure the seagulls also know the Giants’ schedule…giant patch of grass here for dogs to enjoy and also relieve themselves at, you know? So…okay, and there’s something like…a guided bike tour just went by, which is a good way to do this and probably get more information that I’m able to provide you with my limited knowledge and expertise. But, yeah, we're gonna keep going, continuing on on this walk, which I guess…this will lock it in. I’ll just take this walk and then come back on the street car. So…or not, because I’m trying to…I do want to hit seven miles today. So, I guess I could walk back. The only reason I want to walk back is because I’m attempting to record another episode. So, I guess what I could do is walk back…there’s an idea. I don't…I think there’s enough recording time left on this.

Well, let’s just do one thing at a time, once again. I don't have Ray here as a producer, so I’m not able to have him kinda say, Scoots, are you sure about this? Are you sure about that idea? Oh, one thing I was gonna mention is that I am trying to eventually get to the point where these walking episodes have a video, a totally separate video version, 'cause we're recording the audio independently. So, I am…I don't know, it’s something I’m…it’s a work in progress, I guess, and that’s kinda always been the case with Sleep With Me, which…oh, the Port of San Francisco water taxi. I haven't heard about that. I mean, I have heard of how much the water taxis in New York have had a positive impact, I think. I don't know. I’ve heard that. It doesn't mean that it’s a fact.

We're coming up on another public sculpture here that’s a nautical one that maybe I’ll be able to look up. Another…but I think manufactured…no, this looks old. Another place similar to Red’s, though I don't know if it’s really old or it’s new. It’s tough to tell by looking at it, but it’s the same style. It says it’s a eatery and bar. We're here outside of Oracle Park now, and we’ll walk by that. Then we’ll be…not in unprecedented territory. This is a walk I’ve probably done thirty, forty, fifty times, the walk that we’ve done so far today, but…okay, so this is called Sea Change by Mark di Suvero, and…full fathom five thy father lies…coral made…oh, that’s from Shakespeare. I can't read the whole thing. 1995…so, if that’s the case, it’s been here before Oracle Park.

Hopefully there will be a sculpture on Oracle Park to tell us when it was opened, because my memory would say…I moved here in ‘97, right? Or ‘98? The end of ‘97, maybe? 1996, ‘97, August ‘97…yeah, fall of ‘97, I think. Train’s coming, or a car’s coming that’s really…I guess that was just in the background, so it drifted away again. I’m getting some nice grass…there’s actually a park here that a long time ago me and my daughter came to when she was a little kid, and we played at that park and we watched part of a Giants game from outside. Then we went and got a ice cream sundae, though that was also when I was in my cups. Not extremely in my cups, but I always look back at that with somewhat-forlorn memories. Alright, I do have to stop here and figure out this bag thing. So, hold on a second.

Alright, so, I got my bag figured out. I also found the limits of this shooting video thing. So, I did run out of battery. So, yeah, like I said, the shooting-the-video part is a work in progress…a work in progress, but it’s good because if you're not learning, then you're not learning, right? So, alright, so now we're crossing the Giants Oracle Park, and…look for the date here. We got the statues of some of the famous players. It looks like they're having a sale on merch. Alright, so, I’m still passing the Giants Stadium. A bit more traffic here, so I do have to be aware, for your sake, the people driving without mufflers or blasting music. But yeah, they're just out enjoying their Sunday, right? Even though I’m trying to record a sleep podcast. They've also got this Giants wall of kind of fame out here with players, which is cool.

Huh, even people…a couple people at ticket services maybe buying tickets for a future game. I haven't…so, last year I went to one baseball game. Unfortunately I didn’t make it to a A’s game before the stadium closed, and it’s kinda disappointing just 'cause the only reason I didn’t make it there was my own lack of, I don't know, willingness to do what we're doing today. So, yeah. Okay, so, my goal right now…we're here at Willie Mays Gate, which is kinda the most picturesque part of the…outside of the stadium. It’s got these…it’s got a outside restaurant. It’s got all these trees. Again, I feel like I’m here recording some San Francisco magic. I don't see a cornerstone for the stadium. I don't know, I may have to just look it up on the internet like a reasonable person versus…a thing.

But I also learned, well, if you're shooting video, bring a extra battery. Or, what I could have done is…I have a extra battery anyway with me for my phone, but I just didn’t bring a cord, though that wouldn't have been very conducive. So, we’ll see. We will see. But yeah, we're here still walking past the stadium, and we're into the…what used to be called the Splash Zone, and I’m not exactly sure what it is. For some reason I can't remember if they changed the rules or the water access or what. Also, there’s a drawbridge that…there’s a lot of boats out I think because of the beautiful day and because of the Warriors game. So, I want to get across this bridge 'cause I did hear a horn. I think that might have been the ferry leaving, which, I didn’t even know it came to the Giants Stadium on non-game days.

Maybe this bridge doesn't even go up anymore. But we're gonna be going into…now we're headed into…what do we call this? Territory. What do we call it? The undiscovered territory, because the only times I’ve walked this way is…well, one time I was in this general area, but my daughter and I drove to go to a mini-golf place that’s here and eat dinner. But I’m gonna stay on the waterfront. The other time I walked through this area I parked near the Giants Stadium for a Phish show, and so…wow, so, they have a beach here? Holy moly. Oh, my goodness. So, I will…I think I would like to come back and complete the shooting of the video, but there’s…across the water from the Giants Stadium is a beach that…it has a view of the stadium. You could watch the crowd.

You could also listen to the game and watch some of the game on the big screen. So, it’s weird; when this becomes something that kinda creates more to do or more I’d like to do…oh, there’s even another Giant player on this side. I mean, my guess would be…I don't have my glasses on. It’s still a distance away. I’m guessing it would be Barry Bonds for hitting the most splash hits. Okay, so, this statue’s of Willie McCovey, 'cause it’s Willie McCovey Cove, which makes a lot of sense. Yeah, so, I’m walking along this section of waterfront that I’ve never been on before, 'cause the only time I walked…okay, that’s what I was trying to say a bunch of times. The only time I’ve walked…wow, this is grass and there’s people with dogs and people just picnicking.

You can kinda hear that humming noise. Wow, I’ve never been out here before. This is so cool. The next time I do this will be during a Giants game for sure, 'cause…and I’ll be recording it. Also…well, I guess I couldn't do it during…well, I guess I could…well, we’ll figure it out. Okay, I was trying to tell…so, this is like this South of Market area that they've been building up. I think that’s what it’s called. Wow, there’s a little nature walk here, even; China Basin Park. Wow, there’s a boardwalk through what looks like native plants and stuff. Cool, man. Holy moly. I’ve been missing out. So, back here is some parking. There’s offices.

The only time I walked…is I parked my car near Giants Stadium for a Phish show and walked over here for the Phish show, but I was walking fast because I was running late, and then I walked back to my car late at night where I was just trying to…I was like, man, I just want to go home and go to bed. The funny thing was…I think it was that show. Whatever, it ended…it took me, whatever, ten, fifteen, twenty minutes to walk to my car, and then another ten minutes to get across the Bay Bridge. Then I was like, man, I’m gonna walk out of a Phish show and be brushing my teeth within thirty minutes. But then I hit really bad traffic four miles from my place. I was stopped.

So, I haven't walked across…the last time I walked down, I walked down the Main Street, where now I’m kinda walking on the waterfront here, and…yeah, this is the area that kinda developed for offices and housing that…Mission Park; is that what this area is called? I don't know. It has a nice bike lane. It has a nice running lane. They built the stadium here. The UCSF has a huge amount of facilities here, and then there’s other offices and private living buildings. Nothing super tall. But what was my point? My point is I’ve never done this walk before on the waterfront side. There’s a lot of old pier-style buildings kinda blocking this part of the waterfront. Oh, there’s another ferry landing. Pier 48 1/2. So, what was I saying? Is…I don't know how far the stadium is, so I’ll probably start getting ready to do the intro and stuff.

I haven't seen…I thought the game was at 12:30 in San Francisco. Interesting that there’s parking for the Giants Stadium. I’m wondering…I know there’s…for the Chase Center there’s a giant parking lot next to it. But yeah, it’ll be interesting to see the amount of pedestrians 'cause…so, the Dubs do show their games outside of the stadium in a couple different places on the big screen, though now at this point I’m not gonna stay here for the whole game. So, it’s kinda like, maybe I would watch the first quarter if the game starts…if tip-off’s at 1:05 at 12:30. It’s a little bit after 12:30 now. But yeah, this is cool. I’ve never walked in there. We just…I passed a tavern.

I couldn't record 'cause they were playing music, which again makes me grateful I don't drink anymore, 'cause for me I would just have been spending money and making stop after stop and not recording a podcast and thinking I was enjoying things, where now I actually am enjoying this. Again, I like this feel of this area 'cause it is kind of…there is a lot of pedestrian traffic, but there’s a lot of buildings; you can't tell if they're offices or condos. Or maybe one’s a office, one’s a condo. Interesting new architecture. I wouldn't say timeless or classic, but not bad. I guess, you know, more housing, in my opinion, I think is a positive impact. It probably could use a lot more housing to add to the…I mean, just 'cause today a lot of people are out here because of the game or just out here walking. But, man, what a view again.

There’s a lot of plants and things like that on both sides of the street, which really adds to the…man, I’m so impressed at the…well, I don't know the work they've done. But, I don't know, I like the feel here because it is, I don't know, different, and it’s not as busy. Well, I guess what I like about it is I like a mix of the industrial feel along with the feel of the housing and random old stuff and old piers, but also the fact that it’s maintained pretty well. So…and, yeah, I guess I’ll leave you with that, me fanboying out about this part of San Francisco.

We're at the Bay View Boat Club building, 489. It looks like some sort of…it doesn't look busy, but a private place, members only. So, I can work my way towards the stadium here and do the intro and stuff. So, thanks so much for listening. I hope you enjoyed this walk, and…out here and trying to discover new things and make new recommendations. Maybe you take this full walk one day. Maybe you don’t. But thanks so much. This show wouldn't exist or wouldn't be possible without you. So, thanks and goodnight, everybody.

    STORY

    I’m here at Salesforce Park

You can hear the escalator going

    A relatively new transit building

These new transit buses are very convenient

Really beautiful vegetation in this park

    I’m recording this in mid-April

I’m gonna try to walk at least as far as the baseball stadium

    An uncertain wind situation

Wow, there’s 39 species of lavender

The last day of the NBA season (which matters to me)

    Learning about a cork oak

Wow, that’s the primary source of cork for wine bottles!

I had no idea cork came from trees

Green and cream leaves, yellow flowers

    California Oak Meadow

    Passing a prehistoric garden

I’ve been wanting to do this for a while

There’s a new statue on Embarcadero that’s been getting a lot of attention

This park is way more lush than expected

    A public-private partnership

Oh cool, this fountain is based on the bus

It almost feels like the Highline in NYC

A unique vision of San Francisco

A fairly good place to get away on a Sunday

In the grove of a willow-like tree

I guess there’s a fountain jet for each bus

I was just at WDW, making note of the areas with mature vegetation

Oh cool, there’s a robin in there

    Coastal Sage Scrub

We’re at the end of this park now

I would’ve loved to do a live show in this amphitheatre

    Kind of a sleepy Sunday

The Giants are out of town, which also makes it a great day to walk

You can hear the buses below us

    Really high quality bird sounds

I’m gonna take a little break and be right back

I’ll take the gondola or, uh, escalator down

I did use the restrooms at the bus station

Always good to know where the good clean public restrooms are located

Y’know, I’m actually gonna take the gondola with my daughter later

I’ll fade out and be right back

This is a pretty cool train hall

Maybe I’ll just walk along the water instead to avoid the noise

I don’t know how this wind is gonna be

I’d prefer to take the bus home if I can

This area isn’t super busy on the weekends

    We’re at Mission and Spear

The ferry building will be bustling

    I’m screened up

I don’t know too much about the Rincon Center

The protective layer on this mural is peeling off

Oh wow, the ferries come all the way down here

Did you hear that ferry horn? (Maybe not)

    I’m all for public structures

    Cupid’s Bow

Did Cupid ever have a beau?

    Does Cupid like Beau Bridges?

The iconic Hills Bros. coffee building

This is a really nice walk, a strong suggest

People are out walking on a lovely day

This is like some natural white noise

I’m gonna chill here for a couple minutes

A band is about to start up, so I’m gonna relocate

There was just a seagull chilling 4 feet from me for quite a while

    Wettin’ Reeds

We’re gonna go under the Bay Bridge

White, Brown, Green, and Purple Noise

You can kind of hear the bridge here

I don’t know if the huts where you can get a cheap burger and soda are still around

    Bay Bridge Background Noise

Okay, I’ve left the bridge behind

    Red’s and the High Dive

I guess I will eat here, so I’ll be back

    Okay, I just left Red’s

    I haven’t been there since I drank

    SF Style Burgers

I’d also recommend the Delancey Street Cafe

    An opportunity restaurant

A great view of ships anchored in the bay

I will have to meet up with my daughter at some point

    What are these pillars?

I’ve always loved the random art you discover on SF walks

I don’t quite understand what this art means…

Oh boy, this walk makes me love SF

Something in my backpack is making noise

Surely the seagulls know the Giants’ schedule

A guided bike tour just went by

That’s probably more informative than this episode

Maybe I’ll record and episode while I walk back

I’d like to get a video component for these walks

Oh, cool a SF water taxi!

    A nautical public sculpture

Oh, that’s a poem from Shakespeare

I think I moved here in the fall of ‘97

    Train (or loud car) coming

Okay, I did find the limits of this video component

But I got my bag figured out

This show is always a work in progress

Unfortunately I didn’t make it to an A’s game before the stadium closed

I’m here at Willie Mays gate

Does the stadium have a cornerstone?

Important to remember – bring an extra battery for your camera

    I’m in the Splash Zone

Holy Moly, there’s a beach here?!

There’s a beach across the water from the stadium

I just keep adding To Do’s to my list

The statue is of Willie McCovey

People are picnicking and walking dogs

I’ve never been out here before

Okay, this is the South of Market area they’ve been building up

    China Basin Park

I’ve only parked here once for a Phish show

UCSF has a lot of buildings here

A lot of old pier-style buildings

The W’s game should be on soon

    I am glad I don’t drink anymore

The feel here is just different

A mix of old and new

I’ll leave you there, with me fanboying about SF

    Hope you enjoyed this walk

    • I’m here at Salesforce Park
    • You can hear the escalator going
    • A relatively new transit building
    • These new transit buses are very convenient
    • Really beautiful vegetation in this park
    • I’m recording this in mid-April
    • I’m gonna try to walk at least as far as the baseball stadium
    • An uncertain wind situation
    • Wow, there’s 39 species of lavender
    • The last day of the NBA season (which matters to me)
    • Learning about a cork oak
    • Wow, that’s the primary source of cork for wine bottles!
    • I had no idea cork came from trees
    • Green and cream leaves, yellow flowers
    • California Oak Meadow
    • Passing a prehistoric garden
    • I’ve been wanting to do this for a while
    • There’s a new statue on Embarcadero that’s been getting a lot of attention
    • This park is way more lush than expected
    • A public-private partnership
    • Oh cool, this fountain is based on the bus
    • It almost feels like the Highline in NYC
    • A unique vision of San Francisco
    • A fairly good place to get away on a Sunday
    • In the grove of a willow-like tree
    • I guess there’s a fountain jet for each bus
    • I was just at WDW, making note of the areas with mature vegetation
    • Oh cool, there’s a robin in there
    • Coastal Sage Scrub
    • We’re at the end of this park now
    • I would’ve loved to do a live show in this amphitheatre
    • Kind of a sleepy Sunday
    • The Giants are out of town, which also makes it a great day to walk
    • You can hear the buses below us
    • Really high quality bird sounds
    • I’m gonna take a little break and be right back
    • I’ll take the gondola or, uh, escalator down
    • I did use the restrooms at the bus station
    • Always good to know where the good clean public restrooms are located
    • Y’know, I’m actually gonna take the gondola with my daughter later
    • I’ll fade out and be right back
    • This is a pretty cool train hall
    • Maybe I’ll just walk along the water instead to avoid the noise
    • I don’t know how this wind is gonna be
    • I’d prefer to take the bus home if I can
    • This area isn’t super busy on the weekends
    • We’re at Mission and Spear
    • The ferry building will be bustling
    • I’m screened up
    • I don’t know too much about the Rincon Center
    • The protective layer on this mural is peeling off
    • Oh wow, the ferries come all the way down here
    • Did you hear that ferry horn? (Maybe not)
    • I’m all for public structures
    • Cupid’s Bow
    • Did Cupid ever have a beau?
    • Does Cupid like Beau Bridges?
    • The iconic Hills Bros. coffee building
    • This is a really nice walk, a strong suggest
    • People are out walking on a lovely day
    • This is like some natural white noise
    • I’m gonna chill here for a couple minutes
    • A band is about to start up, so I’m gonna relocate
    • There was just a seagull chilling 4 feet from me for quite a while
    • Wettin’ Reeds
    • We’re gonna go under the Bay Bridge
    • White, Brown, Green, and Purple Noise
    • You can kind of hear the bridge here
    • I don’t know if the huts where you can get a cheap burger and soda are still around
    • Bay Bridge Background Noise
    • Okay, I’ve left the bridge behind
    • Red’s and the High Dive
    • I guess I will eat here, so I’ll be back
    • Okay, I just left Red’s
    • I haven’t been there since I drank
    • SF Style Burgers
    • I’d also recommend the Delancey Street Cafe
    • An opportunity restaurant
    • A great view of ships anchored in the bay
    • I will have to meet up with my daughter at some point
    • What are these pillars?
    • I’ve always loved the random art you discover on SF walks
    • I don’t quite understand what this art means…
    • Oh boy, this walk makes me love SF
    • Something in my backpack is making noise
    • Surely the seagulls know the Giants’ schedule
    • A guided bike tour just went by
    • That’s probably more informative than this episode
    • Maybe I’ll record and episode while I walk back
    • I’d like to get a video component for these walks
    • Oh, cool a SF water taxi!
    • A nautical public sculpture
    • Oh, that’s a poem from Shakespeare
    • I think I moved here in the fall of ‘97
    • Train (or loud car) coming
    • Okay, I did find the limits of this video component
    • But I got my bag figured out
    • This show is always a work in progress
    • Unfortunately I didn’t make it to an A’s game before the stadium closed
    • I’m here at Willie Mays gate
    • Does the stadium have a cornerstone?
    • Important to remember – bring an extra battery for your camera
    • I’m in the Splash Zone
    • Holy Moly, there’s a beach here?!
    • There’s a beach across the water from the stadium

    • A lot of old pier-style buildings
    • The W’s game should be on soon
    • I am glad I don’t drink anymore
    • The feel here is just different
    • A mix of old and new
    • I’ll leave you there, with me fanboying about SF
    • Hope you enjoyed this walk
