Episode 1286 – Dreamers Dream of Dreaming | Sleep Spectacular
[START OF RECORDING]
SCOOTER: Friends beyond the binary, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, it’s time for the podcaster who’s here to keep you company and take your mind off of stuff…whoops, I actually have a script I’m supposed to be following. Sorry. This is funny. It’s a live sleep podcast. If you’re new, welcome to Sleep With Me. It’s a podcast to put you to sleep and keep you company so you could fall asleep. In just about twenty minutes…friends beyond the binary, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, sleepers and dreamers, in just about twenty minutes, Sleep With Me podcast invites you to enjoy our Nighttime Sleeptacular, yet to be named but probably called Dreaming of Dreaming. Or, yeah, Dreaming of Dreaming, our Nighttime Spectacular.
That’s presented by our sponsors in Sleep…and all the people that support the show. Our journey will begin in about twenty minutes. This show is very different. It may be the longest Nighttime Sleeptacular you’ve ever heard, but it’s all to keep you company and take your mind off of stuff. The show does take a couple tries to get used to. So, if you’re new, give it a few tries. See how it goes. Regular listeners, welcome back. Really excited to start out with something new here that we’ve never done before, and…because it was an idea I had recently for the third or fourth time. But yeah, if you’re new, give it a few tries. I’m here to just be your friend in the deep, dark night so that you could fall asleep.
What we got coming up; support…the people that support the sponsors or support the show directly is what enables it to be here twice a week for you, and then you just…paying for it’s optional. So, that’s great for most people. After that is a long, meandering intro separate from the support, about twenty…fifteen, twenty minutes long, where I try to introduce the show and ease you into bedtime…part of your wind-down routine. If you prefer to skip that, just check out Bedtime Stories From Sleep With Me in your podcast app of choice. Then, what else? What else do you need to know? Oh, then there will be support, then it’ll be our bedtime story.
Tonight it’ll be our Nighttime Sleeptacular. Probably be more than one of these, but I’ll talk more about it in the intro. That’s it. I’m really glad you’re here. I really hope I can help you fall asleep. Thanks again for coming by, and we’re able to do this for you thanks to the listeners who support the show directly, who rebel. They get so much value out of this podcast, so much comfort out of it, that they become a part of it and they rebel by playing…paying for a free podcast, and that’s how it is free, and then the sponsors that support the show as well. So, what do you say we get on with the show?
INTRO: [INTRO MUSIC] Hey, are you up all night tossing, turning, mind racing? Trouble getting to sleep? Trouble staying asleep? Well, welcome, friends beyond the binary, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, and sleepers. Soon, in just fifteen minutes or so, Sleep With Me invites you to join our Nighttime Sleepstacular…Sleeptacular, Dreaming of…Dreamers…Dreamers Dreaming of Dreamers. Dreamers Dreaming of Dreaming, presented by our sponsors and Sleep With Me+. The best way to experience tonight’s performance is to start to wind down — I’ll talk about your different options — get comfortable, and then after this intro you can get in bed, or if you’re already in bed, you could close your…turn out the lights and press…you already pressed Play, though.
I’m gonna do the rest. What I’m going to attempt to do is create a safe place where you could set aside whatever keeps you awake. It could be thoughts, thinking, thoughts on your mind, thoughts about the past, the present, the future, thinking thoughts, and it could be a lot of thoughts. It could be physical sensations, it could be feelings or physical sensations, emotions or feelings or something deeper than emotion and physical sensations. For me, that’s what it’s just been lately. I’m on a long stretch of relating to the listeners of this podcast strongly. So, it could be changes in time, temperature, routine. Those are all…all three of those are going on for me.
You could be going through something or dealing with something in the deep, dark night, you could be…travel, you could be a guest or have guests, you could be anticipating something. It’s very rare that everything in the intro has been true for me, but so far, check, check, check. But it could be stuff that…you might work a different work schedule, you might only need this podcast temporarily, whatever it is. The only reason I list that stuff is because I want you to know, whether you keep listening to the show or not, you’re a part of something, and you’re part of something in kind of a strange way, I guess, or a different way, a way that’s not glamorized and a way that is easy to dismiss. But I take the time to point this out in different ways because it is important to point it out.
That is we share something in the deep, dark night, and it’s something a little bit beyond words and it’s a little bit hard to describe, but I always try to describe what that is, and it is a connection. It’s a connection. Even if, like I say, you never listen to the show again, I have a website set up, sleepwithmepodcast.com/nothankyou, with other sleep podcasts on there 'cause it does take some time to get used to the show…two or three episodes, for most people. But some people…most people don’t like me or the podcast, and that doesn't mean you don’t deserve a good night's sleep or you aren't still a part of this thing I’m gonna talk about where you need some help in the deep, dark night. What does that mean? Like, why do I list some of the stuff that keeps us awake? So you know you’re not alone.
Like I kinda talk about, the way we structure the show…so you feel seen and welcomed. That’s what I mean…you’re a part…we’re a part of something together. Together alone, alone together, however you want to describe it. There’s people who have been listening to the show for the whole time I’ve been making it, which is pretty much eleven years now. You’ve heard me go through a lot of different things in my life, and those people and like everybody else in the world, we go through a lot of things in our life, right? But for those of us that have trouble sleeping, I don't know, sometimes it feels like the people that can sleep can't relate to the…can't relate to it at all. They don’t mean to be dismissive or whatever, but they can be.
That’s what we share, is…and a lot of it is going on in the deep water. The deep, dark night is what’s above us, but the deep, dark water is what’s beneath us. Yeah, my metaphors are not deep. They involve depth, though. But we have this connection, and it comes from…I know how it feels for me and I know how it feels for me right now because I’m going from being jetlagged where I should be able to fall asleep early because I travelled from east to west. I just can't…I mean, whatever. I don't want to get too deep into it, but my sleep is not great and I know how it feels, right? I might not know what kind of…what’s going on with you and your sleep, but I may be able to relate to some of the feelings there.
But here’s the best news that I’ve learned from making the show day after day, week after week, year after year, and why I work so hard on this podcast, why it means so much to me and why you really are a part of something here with me, is that whatever it is that’s keeping you awake, there’s enough people listening…there’s someone out there in the world listening right now at this moment who does know how you feel or can greatly relate to how you feel. ‘Cause you may say, you’ve never been through stuff like I have. You don’t know me. I say, yeah, no, you’re right. Maybe I can relate to how it feels, maybe I can't, but there is someone listening right now who can relate to how you feel, and they are sitting up in bed or holding a space for you, a loving, caring space for you here on the show.
I don't know if you can feel that softness and if you could feel that heartfelt energy, but it is really here for you, and there’s someone else out there that can relate to how you feel that’s providing that for you in a caring way. Because they say, you know what? I’ve been there. Believe me when I say it on the show. That’s why I go through these moments. I don't do it intentionally, but it’s like, yeah, no, I’ve been there. I know how it feels. They really hope this podcast can help you out or you find another sleep podcast that can help you out. When I first started making the show, that might have not been a option. A lot of people had to repurpose other audio for that. But now there’s more and more options out there, and we have a lot of them listed on sleepwithmepodcast.com/nothankyou. You could check those out.
But what was my point? Is that, yeah, I guess they just hope this podcast works for you the way it worked for them when they were like, this show doesn't make any sense. It’s a bit strange. Then finally like, oh, this is exactly what I was looking for, a friend in the deep, dark night. They hope that for you just like I do, because you deserve a good night's sleep. You deserve a place where you could get some rest, the rest you need so your life is more manageable. Or if you’re in my situation, probably I’m doing everything I can to get my sleep back, but it probably isn't gonna come for a while. I’m going through something and it probably…I’m not anticipating having good sleep for some time. I mean, inconsistently, even with a bedtime routine, even practicing a lot of self-care and healthy habits.
Sometimes I just want that idea that someone else is out there who knows how I feel in the deep, dark night, a friend, and having that comfort helps me as I hope it helps you, and I hope you could become part of that. I appreciate so much the people that are, because that’s what it does for me. When I make the show, I know there’s people in my family and I know a lot of listeners that I’ve met in real life or that I’ve heard from, and that has a lot of meaning to me in the deep, dark night when I can't sleep, not being alone and knowing we all deserve a good night's sleep so our life is more manageable, or to kinda be a little bit more intentional about having a wind down and stuff like that. Last night it was my own fault. I didn’t do my wind down because I wanted to watch The Bear. So, I had to.
So, I said, well, I’ll have to stay up past…a little bit past my bedtime. But, whatever, we…so, I don't know. That’s why I make the show, really, and what I do here is I send my voice across the deep, dark night. I use lulling, soothing, creaky, dulcet tones…superfluous tangents…I don't even know. Sleepy…send my voice across…lulling, soothing, creaky, dulcet tones, pointless meanders, and superfluous tangents. So, I go off-topic. I get mixed up. So, this is a podcast…you don’t exactly listen to it. You just kinda barely listen to it, almost like TV on in the other room or a radio on the other side of the beach, or whatever it is. It’s something…you can listen to it but you don’t need to listen to it. Fuzzy, I guess, is the main way to describe it, out of focus. So, it’s a podcast you can just kinda barely listen to.
Now, a lot of people get here…they’re skeptical, they’re doubtful, they’re frustrated, right? You’ve had trouble sleeping, you’re looking for something to help you, you heard about this show or you just randomly found it. Why wouldn't you be skeptical or doubtful? I would be. Why wouldn’t you be frustrated? I’m just going on and on and not getting to any point. So, that’s why I say it does take a couple tries to get used to. There’s like…I’m pretty sure a million people have told me they strongly disliked me. I mean, at least multiple times a week I hear it…and then it took two or three tries and I say, oh, now I get it. The show is always never going anywhere, always going nowhere, always never getting started.
That’s what…so, it does take a few tries just to realize this show is…it’s structured but it’s loosely structured. It’s intentional but it’s loosely intentional. I don't know, that might be a made-up sentence there. So, just give it a few tries and see how it goes. Also, the show is not meant to put you to sleep. Like I said, when I first started making the show, the idea of bedtime stories for grownups was more of like…I don't know if…I don't know. But I said, hey, how come there’s not something like that for adults that there is for kids that’s fun and lighthearted and friendly? A lot of stuff out there felt way too serious for me or I had to use something that was meant to be listened to during the daytime to fall asleep to. What I realized is, yeah, I’m not here to put you to sleep.
I’m here to keep you company while you fall asleep, to take your mind off of stuff so you could fall asleep, to distract you from whatever’s keeping you awake, to be your friend in the deep, dark night, your bore-friend, your bore-bae, your bore-sib, your bore-bud, your neigh-bore, your bore-bor, your Borbie, your bore…your bore-friend, your bore-bestie, your bores, your Borbie, whatever other…BB…best bore-friend f’eva, to keep you company and take your mind off of stuff so you could fall asleep whether you’re awake or asleep. That’s why the shows are over an hour. There’s no pressure to fall asleep. There are people listening who can't sleep at all, and I’m here for them.
There’s people who are listening 'cause they need a break during the day, and I’m here for them and for you to the very end whether you’re awake or asleep, whether you’re listening or not or whenever you listen. So, I don't know, those are a couple things that are different about this show…a sleep podcast that doesn't put you to sleep. It’s funny, right? It’s a sleep podcast you could listen to, but is…I’m barely entertaining and that is important to me, especially tonight’s show, which I came up with. I don't know, I’ve had the idea a few times, but I was listening to the narration of a Nighttime Spectacular, and I said to myself…I don't know, I do…did find myself over the past four or five years doing running commentaries and kinda goofing on different things like that and redoing them.
Any time I do…imitation is the strongest form of flattery or of my level of…sometimes, or of jealousy or whatever. But so, I said, wait a second, I keep doing these goofs on different Nighttime Spectaculars, and what if there was one that was an hour long and full of meanders? Well, that would be…that would not be interesting, to be honest, but it would be good to sleep to. So, that’s what tonight’s show will be, is the first attempt to do that. But I think there’s enough…as I’ve started to think about it, there’s probably enough material to do this seasonally, too, down the road. But…structure…oh, structure of the show; that’s what really throws people off, really gets strong responses, so much so that we have a second podcast now called Bedtime Stories for Sleep With Me that just has the beginning of the show and the story.
But this show is the most popular version of anything we do and the way most people listen, and they listen to it linearly. So, I’ll just explain why and how the show is structured, maybe to give you some peace of mind…or you say, okay, I’ll try something else, a different version of it. But I do recommend trying this a few times and just see how it goes. Or if you already know this is a ‘no’ listening to me, sleepwithmepodcast.com/nothankyou…which has also been proven, because there’s been these different things of podcast connections. Sleepwithmepodcast.com/nothankyou has introduced a lot of people to different sleep podcasts, including people that let me know in not a nice way how much they’d…but it’s like, hey, as long as you’re getting sleep and you found a good podcast to listen to, that’s great.
That’s why I have sleepwithmepodcast.com/nothankyou set up, so you don’t have to let me know in not a nice way. You’ll just get the sleep you need. But let me tell you why the show is structured the way it’s structured. So, that might help you out. So, it starts off with a greeting; friends beyond the binary, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, so you feel seen and welcomed in, and if you’re a regular listener, you get a familiar sense of wellbeing. Oh, I’m home. This is my bore-friend. He’s being silly. He does the same greeting every time with a little bit different…then there’s sponsor support. That’s how most people like to listen to the podcast, is the free version supported by sponsors. They listen linearly. If you prefer something without ads, you could support the show directly and get that.
After that and separate from the support is a show within a show. It’s a intro, which we’re almost through. It’s about fifteen to twenty minutes long where I unsuccessfully attempt to introduce the podcast. I mean, I guess I don't anymore. I mean, I guess I have tried other times to be like, let’s try to do a ten-minute intro. I never have been able to do it. But it’s like, it follows a familiar structure every time where I kinda say some of the same things and point out the same points, but it’s different every time because whatever keeps me awake adjusts. That’s what’s going on with me now, and it’s one step ahead of me, but having something that’s familiar but different every time seems to throw those parts of me off.
They can't predict what’s coming next. But for a regular listener, you kinda have a general sense. So, I don't know, it’s something comfortable but new, and that’s why the intro is different every time versus just being a short thing that I repeat or something like that. The other reason the intro’s fifteen to twenty minutes long is so it can be part of your wind down or a buffer between daytime, evening time, and sleep, to ease you into bedtime. That’s what’s worked for me most of the time personally and what’s shown to work in studies, is having a wind-down routine to ease you into bedtime.
So, some people are in bed getting comfortable, some people are asleep, a small percentage of people, some people don’t…are now moving over to Bedtime Stories with Sleep With Me 'cause they just want the stories and not this intro, but for most people, this…the people like this 'cause it eases them into bedtime and you get little insights of where the idea of this episode came from, and we get to know each other a little bit better and you get to feel like you’re a part of something. I think those are all the important things about it. But some people just don’t like it or they assume it’s part of the sponsor stuff. I don't know, but it’s important.
It eases you into bedtime. Then there’s support, then there will be our bedtime story. Tonight it’ll be our Nighttime Sleeptacular, Dreaming…Dreamers Dreaming of Dreaming. I think that’s a good one, Dreamers Dreaming of Dreaming, our Nighttime Sleeptacular, and that’s it. That’s why I make the show. That’s what to expect. I’m really glad you’re here. Believe it or not, myself and a team of people work really hard on this show, and we yearn and strive. We really want to help you fall asleep. So, thanks again for coming by, and here’s the ways were able to do this for you for free twice a week.
Alright everybody, this is Scoots here, and I’m gonna hand you over…this is your first visit at the Sleep With Me…whatever, the Sleep With Me version of this theme park or a Cloud Tower theme park, and you spent the whole day there. But compared to a regular theme park, this is designed with Sleep With Me in mind. So, now…I guess it would be like portable, comfortable things that would instantly transport you to your hotel room, but first you get to relax and watch one of our many Nighttime Sleeptaculars, this one called Dreamers Dream of Dreaming. So, without further ado, Sleep With Me is proud to present Dreamers Dream of Dreaming. Yes, they do. Dreamers dream of dreaming. Each night, a dreamer dreams of dreaming.
Or do they do that during the day? Do you ever wonder what will I dream of tonight? Will I dream of something new or a dream I long to pursue? What will that dream be and will I dream of it this evening? Will the dream be an adventure or a glimpse inside of me? Well, tonight’s show tells you just that as we set forth, getting ready. Bedtime is approaching. To start the dream, we must wind down and follow the path to winding down and set our rest for the morrow. Each moment we take as a part of our wind down helps us find the way to rest, to set the tone for dreaming, for you will dream, or did you come dreaming of dreaming? We’ll start to wind down and relax. As you wind down, certain parts of you will activate but also become quiet at the same time.
But they will also vie for your attention, and you see them in the sky now, the brainbots, for every nighttime your brainbots see as a beginning. Suddenly, in a restful moment, they begin to move faster, faster and faster, seemingly louder and louder. Look at me, listen to me. Dreamer, don’t dream. Dream of me, not dreams or dreaming. They look out; they say, starlight. They say, star bright. They say, the stars, the stars, the stars tonight. Let’s count the stars. Why don’t you know more about constellations? Remember the past. Anticipate the future. The brainbots want you to act right now. But you, you want to dream. It could be a dream of France. It could be a dream of books. It could be a dream of a library, a dream that is free, free from the past and the future, but you have to be free to dream, in a sense.
So, what is it about these brainbots? We can't quiet them down and we know, as we see them in the sky, demanding our attention, we can't dismiss them. They have no sleep switch. They have no off switch. What shall we do? Well, the secret lies deep within your heart. You just have to calm down and open it up, for what the brainbots need most isn't your attention. It’s your calming love. I’ll tell you a story tonight, a story of my own brainbots, brainbots…some not…some that look…are as cute as BB-8 and BB-88, and some that are more misshapen boxes that roll along with a groan and a rumble, brainbots that don’t have one shadow but multiple shadows. I say, how…is this a dream? Is this even possible? But no, they put a shadow on the past and a shadow on the future.
For years, I sought out like a hero, a hero, a hero, heeding the hero’s call against the brainbots, and I set forth in study, in action, with a stern look and a bitter frown. I said, brainbots, I will defeat you. This is my tale. It was a tale of nightly battles against the brainbots, but back then I didn’t even know that’s who I was up against. Each night I would set forth to vanquish what kept me from sleep, to vanquish the past, to predict the future, and calculating, thinking, anticipating, planning. As the years drew from that deep past as a child into the future, the brainbots took more forms. I said, don't worry, I’ll defeat you one day. Each night…and some nights I would push them away, hide them away, distract them away, but once they would return…every turn I took, a brainbot would appear.
It could be a year; it could be ten years before it would come back, but there was always another one to replace them. How many times did you spill milk? Oh boy, that was…that’s a easier brainbot to deal with, but just a metaphor as well. The brainbots were always there. They were always waiting, and I was always willing to enter a dance-off with them, a dance-off that only I could win, a dance-off with stakes who were global, that I must win, that I could win. One day, I thought, I’d quiet these brainbots down, to tear out their batteries, unplug them, wear them down, prevent them if they were solar-powered, deplete their energy, or take them apart piece by piece. That would be my day of victory when sleep would come.
That was the dream this dreamer dreamed of, a dream of a world without brainbots, a dream of a sky, of an Earth, of a mind, of feelings without them. I thought that day would come. Then one day, it was a strange day. The wind was howling in the air like it is now in the sky above you, but the air was warm and comforting. I walked into that night air, ready again to get…to say, hey, brainbots, this is it. Tonight is the night. I still don’t know if this was a dream. I was dreaming of dream…that I dreamed of or if it was a dream I’m remembering or if it really happened. But as I stood above the brainbots, battling…they took hold, and at first I thought they were grouping together like Voltron.
The sky above you is part of our new drone presentation. Look. Or like a Mighty Morphin’ Power Ranger coming together, or the Rangers coming together. The brainbots were coming. But it was deep in the mist and the fog and the wind, just out of sight, foggy, misty, 'cause of the fog and the wind that I had just mentioned yet again. In the nighttime my eyes couldn't quite adjust, but I felt like the brainbots had assembled into something my height. Would I meet my match or would tonight be the night I finally had victory over them? But then I saw something. You know one of those moments on a night just like tonight, where you just happen to turn and see something out of the corner of your eye.
Maybe it’s something in someone else’s body language or the look on their face or the way they’re holding their shoulders, the way they’re breathing, where their hands…something you’re aware of on a level below your awareness. Just for a brief second, I saw that out of the corner of my eye with the brainbots, and I thought the brainbots looked sad and looked down. For a second, it created softness within me. Those brainbots might need a friend. But then that part of me, the part of me that struggled for so long against them, was ready to arise. It said, this is our moment, our moment of victory. Let us seize the day. It’s time to carpe some diem, if you know what I’m saying.
I sang a song of carpe diem, of seizing the day, and you could see what the…whatever the projection mapping we have on Morpheus’ Cloud Tower, and the drones…and there was a great charging forth from within me. I made those y’alls and those vestigial sounds. I don't know if they’re…I don't know. It’s a tail. I didn’t have a vestigial tail, but if I did, I would have now been ready and been…used it in my…to move forth against the brainbots, for this was the time I would rise above them, and I was fierce and I was ready. As I charged forward, I bumped something. Now, luckily I slowed my charging, so I didn’t bump it too hard, and they bounced back. That’s when I saw it, the eyes, locked with mine.
The eyes locked mine, I thought, and I moved and the eyes moved. At first it was disconcerting, and then it was discombobulating, where I felt like I was at sea, a ship at sea crashing across the waves. Then it was like the Phish song which we don’t have the rights to for this Nighttime Sleeptacular, but it was like…at first I…it was like, on the ice, but then I realized it was a mirror image. These weren't brainbots at all. This was me. I said, was this a dream and I just woke up and I bumped into the mirror, and now I’m seeing myself? But again, with Sleeptaculars, everything becomes clear, and this was the moment it all became clear. Again, we said we’d have…one day our Sleep Spectacular will have songs to go along with our lasers and projections and drones and even balloons and so much…things.
But tonight, it is a special night, I’d say, because tonight was the night a dreamer dreamed of dreaming, and this dream was no dream at all. This was what becomes…comes before my dreams. It is a time to change, for something had happened, something happening to me, my memory of my eyes catching the brainbot’s body…caught it again, but it was a reflection of me. I was the one with the sad posture. Then there was flashes, like these flashes in the sky, like the flashes in movies, like the flashes at night in a storm. Sometimes those flashes reveal things, reveal things within us, for I had seen within me the brainbots had assembled. Then I thought to myself, I’m fighting myself?
Then I thought, no, the brainbots are fighting myself and I’m fighting myself, myself…the brainbots fighting myself, myself…the brainbots fighting themselves…myself. I said, this is the language of a dreamer dreaming of dreaming, is it not? For it’s both confusing and clear at the same time. I thought, it is me. I am brainbot, and the music behind us rose to the top of the tower, and more cool stuff was happening in the sky as you lounged and watched it. I thought, these brainbots don’t need a dance-off. They don’t need to be conquered at all. They need love, and we transitioned into a slow period with music to slow down after that crest of action. I don't know if you noticed; that’s the key to Sleeptaculars, especially beta Sleeptaculars like this one, where the action crests and then it falls yet again.
Then there’s an interlude, maybe. I don't know what they call them in Sleeptaculars, Nighttime Sleeptaculars like this one. But there was an interlude called Consider…what I would call Considering Love, Considering the Brain…‘how could I love and how could I not love’ became the dance within me, no longer a battle but a child in a maze, a hedge maze. Don’t run too fast, for the hedges may touch your skin in an unpleasant way. But also go slow and don’t go too fast within your mind or your heart. Try to pay attention. Try to listen. I was confused in this maze, for how would I love that which I had danced off against for so many years? How would I become a friend? Is that what these brainbots needed? Is that what I needed, a friend? A friend at night?
Then we saw what you’re seeing now, something so Sleep Spectacular, no other theme park had done it, for as you see, the Tower of Morpheus comes alive tonight. The arms of Morpheus start to extend out of the tower. How is that possible, you think to yourself? Is this a dream a dreamer’s dreaming of or not? I said, those are the arms of Morpheus opening wide, like Temba. Shaka when the walls fell. Something about Tanagra, I thought to myself. Is this…what did I remember of Beowulf and Grendel? Very little, I thought. Maybe those two things don’t even have…they do…they’re somehow tangentially related. I thought I had forgotten those stories, and I thought of Jean-Luc Picard. Why, suddenly in a Sleeptacular, was I thinking of Jean-Luc Picard?
Because he knew how to be a friend in a moment, too. That must have been why I thought of that. Is that what Morpheus was trying to tell me? Then I realized I had to let…open my arms to the dreams dreamers dream of, for the logic of the day…I had wound down somehow, and I had tossed and turned before I had even gotten in bed, tossed and turned for so many years against the brainbots. You’d think you’d get tired of it, but each day, as I had said already in my tale, I had renewed my energy and my desire to conquer them. But now the logic of the dream had told me that brainbots, me, I, brainbot, brainbot I, one in the same, searching for friends, a little bit sad, and the arms of Morpheus were opened. So, what did that mean moving forward? A grand piano flies across the sky.
Well, that’s confusing, 'cause I was just a child in a maze, and now I’m a child in a maze on a grand piano flying through the maze. I hear laughter all around me, and the piano grows as I jump from key to key. Is this the music of dreams dreamers are dreaming? Then the piano circles…surround the Tower of Morpheus, and I began to think, it’s not a language of dreams; it’s the music of dreams. But then, all around, multiple glowing fountains with lasers grew up around me, and around those fountains danced…now, because it was a dream, they weren't brainbots. They were puffy, smiling marshmallows dancing around one, and birds dancing around a birdbath and into the birdbath around another and around the other ones. What did you see? What do you see there?
Oh, is that your friend Ray waving and going around a fountain? Is that RW, Richard Warren Sears and James Cashpenney going around a fountain with Electra, and is that Mesmero? Is that even a character that you saw today dancing around the fountains? What could this mean? Oh, the language of music and the language of dance was happening all around me, and the dreamer had become…had I began to dream or was this a dream? That’s when the lighting changed and we went from some sort of dancing and flying music to something not quite ominous but not quite…that leaves you with a sense of confidence and something unsure, as Morpheus’ tower grows dark but with a comforting overlay of colors.
There’s a door, then the door is darkness, but a dark door seeming to call again and again with that kind of music, familiar from one of our many projects, saying, come through the door. Come on through the door. Morpheus has more. Then I remembered spending the day at the Morpheus section of Cloud Tower, the part of the park you visited today, where memories are made in the sky with Morpheus’ festivals and adventures. I realized I heard the song…so familiar. Every door has a pillow. Every door has a pillow. Cross on through. You might not see it, but the pillow is there. You just have to be it. You think again, this must be dream logic. It makes no sense to me. How could that be, a doorway with a pillow? Why would a doorway have a pillow? ‘Cause pillows are soft or sometimes firm.
Oh, there’s a chorus singing, or whatever that’s called. They’re singing to me. Then you realize there’s a parade of pillows not going through the door but just on the other side of the door, parading through. The last pillow is the cutest pillow, and it’s reaching its pillow…each side of its top is an arm and a hand, and it has two feet, but it’s reaching one hand out towards us, towards you, towards me. Come through the door, for every doorway has a pillow, and tonight, that pillow needs you. So, we reached out and we crossed through. We cross the threshold. We cross into the world of Cloud Tower, and we see that the clouds in Cloud Tower are now blooming on the other side of this doorway, for it is both dark and bright at the same time. It’s not harsh to the eyes like sun on a foggy day, but it’s not hard to see, either.
The air is the perfect temperature. We’re led into a garden of clouds, a garden of comfortable, puffy clouds, and we lie down in a petal of a cloud flower, and we snuggle up with the pillow we just had. We hold the pillow in our arms. You could purchase it on your way out of the gates, but for now, in the sky beyond the doorway, the pillow needs you. You hold your pillow. You hold this pillow tonight. Then you see something else in the sky. Wait, what’s this? A pillow is a dreamer dreaming of dreaming? No, this pillow dreams. What does this pillow dream of? Well, first it dreams it’s on the plains with thousands and thousands of other pillows migrating. Pillows migrate, you think. They dream of migrating. They’re all moving fast. They’re all moving together. They’re all moving in sync.
But you also know you need to hold this pillow tight, 'cause secretly the pillow wonders, will it be left behind? But as you hold the pillow in your arms and give it love and comfort like those around you, those in your family, those guests you joined today, maybe you extended out the energy from your heart to the guests all around you and to the tower. This pillow among pillows, among thousands and thousands of pillows migrating, knows it’s not alone. It just sometimes feels alone, but it’s together. Then in a way only our projection technology could show, it goes from migrating pillows to waves. There on the waves are ships, ships sailing, ships going quickly, wave after wave after wave.
On that ship is our pillow and many other pillows, and they’re having a festival, a swimming and diving festival, swimming in the water, for it must be a dream, because pillows really can't…by the way…but there is waterproof pillows. That is another option, but non…this is just a dream. The pillows go off of…but our pillow pauses at the diving board that goes into the sea. Even though it sees plenty of safety; friends…and knows this water’s warm and it’s contained within our…within the sky right now above you, this pillow knows that it’s also…hesitates, and it needs you to hold it once again with an extra snuggle in and comfort this pillow so it can jump and join in the water. Suddenly it goes from the surface to below the water, under the sea, if you will. Hardy-har-har.
It hears a call and it heads deeper, and it sees the below version of a pillow, which is just kind of like a waterproof pillow. But we’ve…you could see it in the sky now. The sky has become under the sea. Morpheus’ tower is now the Tower of mer-Morpheus, and these are the mer-pillows. They want to frolic with you under the sea, and they frolic. They do. They swim, and clams talk to you, and other sea-based beings say ‘hello’. But you always wondered what it was like under the sea, so you’re still not so sure. You say, okay, here I am, down here in the water with mer-pillows and mer-Morpheus. But I’m not quite sure. You hold your pillow again and you say, it’s okay, it’s a dream. In this dream, pillows can be underwater. Frolic, frolic, frolic. Frolic with the mer-pillows, you say.
Then you know it’s time to come back and you feel the pillow moving in your arms, but you also see this maternal pillow walking around, and somehow, because it’s a dream, the maternal pillow stands over you and nods, makes eye contact with you, holds out a blanket and motions for you to get up and to tuck this pillow in for the night. This must be that pillow’s bed. Is this the mother pillow or the mother of this pillow? But she seems to be saying, it’s okay. It’s time for you to go, for the next part of your journey will begin. Now, normally in a Sleeptacular, we’d be much over time, but we’re only ready for the next part of the adventure. You think, where would I go?
But then you see it in the sky and you remember the first or second tale of Cloud Tower where Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer or the dreamlike equivalent of that because it’s probably like…you know, a reindeer with a shiny nose. Maybe not red. Maybe not even a reindeer is flying in the sky above you. It comes down and it lands beside you. They say, there’s a sleigh coming with…right behind me. Get in the sleigh and head this way, the dreamer’s way, the dreamer’s dream of a way to dream, 'cause dreamers dream of dreaming. Soon, the sleigh comes. Yeah, you’re right; it’s not a reindeer or Rudolph. It’s something else, something magical pulling the sleigh. You never thought you’d joyride in Santa’s sleigh or the equivalent, right?
Santa’s never…all of the holiday material you consumed, there was always…Santa was either on…work delivering presents, on an adventure that had gotten in the way of delivering presents, or an adventure that had to be completed to deliver presents. But you’re joyriding in the sleigh, not really fast, but you look below you. Wait a second, you think. Down there, somewhere down there…and you think, somewhere down there, I’m sleeping. You see something comforting that reminds you of home. While you’re up in the sky above, you’re also at home, and here, you’re at home, too. Soon, you climb yet higher, higher in the sky. How could I be…go higher than the level of the clouds? You head out of the atmosphere, but because it’s a dream, it’s totally fine.
You head into the stars, but the stars are like a sea, a sea of sparkling things, and the sky is a warm, viscous gelatin, and you’re going through it, but viscous enough that suddenly you realize you’re not in the sleigh anymore. You’re in a…not quite a waterslide, but a water tube. But it has a open top and it’s going through the starry sky. You say, the starry sky above me, I…below, I sleep…the stars above me in the sky. It’s almost lyrical and musical as well. But you wonder, where am I going? Where am I headed in this dream? Where will I go, you know? Where will the dreamer dream of dreaming as you go and the stars gather around you? Suddenly the stars are tickling you, and you…so, we go into another interlude, a little bit of a sloppy transition, but this is still a beta one.
You’re giggling and it’s a lighthearted moment. Again, the lasers and the fountains show that with the music behind us as you’re tickled by stars. Another dreamy song goes that I’ll give…Tickled by Stars. Stars tickle me at night. Stars, they’re there to delight. Stars tickle me at night. You went…and then the part of the song that has the message…when I was young, I thought starlight was sharp, starlight was cold, starlight was far, far away. I wondered why the stars were so cold and distant and sharp-edged. Then I learned more because I learned through science and my own learning about science in school and more that I could…I was only seeing a tiny percentage of the spectrum.
That’s when our next song goes from stars tickling to a tiny percentage of the spectrum, and we meet our friend who’s the first character we see. It may be a giant balloon with projection mapping and drones. You say, who are you? They say…they laugh in a loving way. How little do you see? Why don’t you come with me? You say, again, who are you? They say, I’m all and all that’s beyond the visible spectrum. You say, can I just call you Beyond? They say, come join me and you’ll see what I can see. They change into a giant pair of glasses and then a helmet and then a visor. You get to choose; maybe they’re binoculars, maybe a monocular, maybe a monocle. It dances around you and you say, okay, I could…I can check this out. I’m down, I’m down. Then you see the stars in a whole new way.
They’re no longer cold and alone in space. They’re no longer far away, for they’re all…they’re everywhere. You realize the warmth you’re feeling is from a star. The warmth you’re feeling is from a star shining on the other side of the world. The stars dance around you, and you say, now, this is more like a Milky Way. Oh, to bathe in the Milky Way is yet another tune you may be familiar with that plays now above the night. As you see more and more beyond what you had never seen before, there’s an expansiveness to the layers of the spectrum you could not see, and there’s a great wideness and a great comfort as you kind of lounge in the Milky Way. Then you remember…because you see it again above you; the open arms of Morpheus are now hugging a giant pillow like you had hugged a pillow before.
You say, okay, I get it. Then you hear it. You hear it somewhere nearby and yet far away, a voice, a confused voice just on the other side of the darkness. No, no, no, the stars are so cold and sharp and distant. No, no, no. No, no…a contrary voice. You hear something and you hear not-nice words, and you stand up because it calls to you, and you cross over. You cross through something, but now you can see. You can see it all because you are dreaming the dreams dreamers dream of dreaming of. You’re a dreamer dreaming, not dreaming of dreaming. Then you cross over and you’re in a great, cloudy field, but it also feels small and intimate. You see them there before you, as your brainbots. They’re all different and they’re all debating something, but none of them have a positive thing to debate about.
They’re talking about the stars. They’re talking about the past. They’re talking about the future. They’re talking about things that they need to control that are out of their control, their desire for 100% certainty. Then even harebrained ideas…well, if we could just capture those stars and combine them and warm them up, maybe then things will be fine. Or, if we could get the stars to love us enough, maybe then we’ll be fine. Another one says, well, I could become greater than the stars, maybe, shine brighter than them, and then we’ll be okay. You realize that you’re not just standing with them; you’re standing above them, towering above them. You never realized how small they really were. You scoop them up in your arms, and you see Morpheus above you has scooped them up in a giant version.
A very spectacular, Sleeptacular view. Morpheus’ arms…and you say, holy moly. But then you start to whisper to them, and you whisper in a song-like voice. You say, don't worry, I’m here. I’m sorry. I’m sorry I spent so much time…and they say, it’s you, it’s you. You’re holding us. Thank you. You say, it’s gonna be okay. I want to show you it’s gonna be okay. So, you take them and you hand them the glasses, but you don’t even have to hand them to them because you can just wave your arm and show them the stars aren't just cold and distant, and that there’s so much more there. You say, that there is dark matter and those are quarks, but I don't understand them even yet, but maybe one day I will.
They say, dark matter sounds dark. You say, well, technically I don't…no, I don't think it’s anything to judge about, because I’ve been wrong about the stars my whole life and I’ve been wrong about all of you. Finally, finally, the big number comes with the message about coming together, opening your arms, opening your heart, and holding your brainbots. But even in the midst of that serious thing, we get one last funny interlude where we could put in a fake…the almost highlight of the fireworks, where every brainbot needs a bud and each brainbot tells how they need a bud. I’m thinking about the spilled milk as a kid by…and just need a bud. You say, don't worry, everybody in the world has spilled milk or some sort of beverage. It’s okay. I’ll help you clean it up. Oh, but what about tomorrow?
That’s a big part…that was one of our big hits. But what about tomorrow? Oh no, what about tomorrow? Then you sing back, tomorrow never comes. You say, holy cow, that was a classic number, and it has…and then…but it’s just segments of songs to keep things moving in a match-up with the things in the sky and to make it feel fun and loving at the same time. As it grows and as your thing…we grow to the final message where we start to look at one another and the brainbots start to snuggle, and you give them snacks and treats and you tell them you love them. Then we all sing. They say, what song shall we sing? You say, together we dream of dreaming. We’re dreamers dreaming of dreaming. Together we dream. We’re dreamers dreaming of dreaming. You start to go through their dreams.
What do you dream of? A puppy, a frown, a pine tree. I’m swimming in a bowl of jelly. Some of the other old dreams come up, too, and you say, okay, that’s okay, too. I’m dreaming of a frowny-faced teacher, of my pencil not working when I need it. But there’s a spirit of laughter 'cause together we’re dreamers dreaming of dreaming. Then you realize something you knew all along and you never knew at all, something you saw in the stars that you knew when you finally saw beyond the visible spectrum, that the stars are within you, just like the brainbots are. Again, this isn't what we actually…this is only because it’s a Sleeptacular.
But you take each brainbot and you say, I’m gonna send you to the stars, because this is a dream and together we’re dreaming of dreaming, and even though I’m gonna throw you into the stars, we’ll still be together dreaming of dreaming. You don’t actually say that part. It’s just shown, you know. Show, don’t tell. But I’m explaining it here because we’re still working on the show. You throw each brainbot into the sky, and it’s spectacular. The joy you hear…we all hear as each brainbot goes into the sky and swirls around and around the castle. Morpheus smiles and we sing together. We dream of dreaming dreamers dreaming of dreaming. Then it happens faster and faster as the music builds, and we know, together, yes, we dream. Together we’re dreamers dreaming.
Oh yes, we dream together. How exciting is it? Yes. It keeps building and building and building, and it gets more and more spectacular until finally the whole sky is filled with smiling brainbots and joy, lasers and drones, and Morpheus laughing. We all laugh, and Morpheus and the pillow and everyone’s hands are in the air, circling and dancing around, with one last dance remix version. As the last things in the sky pop, our energy falls back down, and then we have the last lines of the…tonight we’re all dreamers dreaming of dreaming. Thank you for joining us today for our Sleep Spectacular. We hope you enjoyed your evening at Sleep With Me Park or whatever we’re calling it.
On behalf of Morpheus, Scooter, and all our brainbots, we wish you a good night here, and beyond the visible spectrum in the world where dreamers dream of dreaming, together, we all wish one another goodnight. Then you do the traditional thing at our park, which is everyone says goodnight to one another. Strangers say goodnight. You say goodnight to your family and give them hugs. Or if you’re alone, you give yourself a little hug. People are kissing their biceps, optionally paying for upcharge to dip their elbows in milk, but everyone in the park gives a genuine goodnight as they exit to each and every…goodnight, goodnight. Dream of dreaming, dreamer. Dream of dreaming, dreamer. Dream of dreaming, dreamers. Goodnight.
